Title: oil coming from my fuel pump area?
Post by: bluetarger on March 16, 2013, 01:47:23 pm
Hi Guys,
1981 chev Scottsdale k10 350 engine Turbo 350 transmission.

My issue is that first few trips out after the work below I had noticed that I had oil dripping from the front of the engine around the area of the fuel pump. it splashes around alot so it is hard to pinpoint where from. I cannot make the engine leak oil at low RPM only after a hard push oftern at higher RPM's. After the hard push the oil is everywhere already. It seems to be coming from no higher than the fuel pump as the pump and crossmember directly under the pump are dripping in oil when I open the hood.

A little background,

I just did some clean up and maintenance to my truck to get it back on the road and back as my daily driver (if I can get this figured out). The engine is original 350 and pretty tired.
I just swapped out my old stock intake and carb with a Edelbrock performer intake and performer carb. My old stock Carter carb was in terrible shape and needed to be replaced (or serious rebuild). I cleaned up all the vacuum lines and replaced all with new lines, everything sealed up nicely. I have a new PCV in and it seems to be working fine.
I have been trying to get the transmission kick-down set so I have been taking the truck out to make sure it shifts properly, on these trips I have been working the engine hard and have had the RPM's higher then I would prefer to have had them
Brand new fuel pump installed today,

I have already;
-changed the fuel pump
-checked my engine for blow by ( but at low rpm only)

I'd bet you have a bolt missing in the lower boss on the passenger side front of the block. There should be a 3/8-16 bolt 3/4" long screwed into the hole. If you have two empty holes instead of the one, you know where your leak is coming from. It will mimic a fuel pump oil leak every time.

I just checked and both bold holes are empty, I will put some bolts in and take it for a run and post my findings, thanks for the input,  much appreciated.

It's critical that you put a little short bolt in the bottom hole. That hole is open and behind it is your fuel pump push rod. Too long of a bolt will press against the push rod and abrade it away, putting bad stuff floating around in your oil system. All you need is enough bolt to fill the threaded hole and no more.

Just blocked the holes and it has definitely solved my oil issue, I have used very short bolts, basically enough to thread in and plug no more.

 a little more tuning on the carb and hopefully drive it to work monday!

Thanks for the help!!!
