Title: fuel guage issues

Just bought a 86 step. Originally had dual tanks...now just the passanger side.. problem is a fuel gauge that is acting up. Filled it up and after driving for a wh :-\ile or the next day the gauge will read 3/4 or  1/2 full or maybe 1/4full. Gets hard to tell just how much fuel I really have. Drove it 160 miles after a fill up 2 days ago and now reads almost empty although 20 miles before it read 1/2 full. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks
