Title: Removing my oil pan
Post by: pedigo78 on March 28, 2013, 07:37:18 pm
Ok not to long ago I had to change my oil pan in my 85 k20 454. Now back then I had a cherry picker to help lift up the engine so i my oil pan could clear my cross member. Well I need to replace the pan itself cause it is still leaking or remove it to inspect it and maybe just replace with a better gasket. My question is what is another way to lift the engine without a picker? just a few inches. Just dont want to rent a picker.

You say K. I have never had to lift a motor in a 4x4 of our vintage Chevy truck to swap an oil pan. It is tight, but can be done.

really, i figured with that cross member so close there wouldnt be enough room to drop it and slide it out. but if it can be done then that would be great. I

Sliding in is the tricky part.  ::)  Not knocking the gasket off!
If you need more room I would imagine you could use a couple bottle jacks, and a couple short pieces of 2x4 to jack up under the engine. Just becareful not to crush your distributor cap against the fire wall.

like blaz said it can be done. i find it easy if you tie some string threw some of the bolt holes and threw the gasket to hold the gasket in place while your sliding it.

X2 what Irish said. Sgt Del had a good post about this subject somewhere here.  Had some good pics too.

Ok gentlemen, I finally finished my oil pan. lifted the motor pulled the pan. everything went well. test drove it and forgot to tighten drain bolt (duh) but also noticed it was still leaking from passenger side near the dipstick. Now remember this is a 454. so there are plugs all over it. and thats the problem. a cracked plug with no face lift on it to remove so it will have to be extracted. but almost done. thank the lord
