Title: lower rear end of 78 chevy step
Post by: 78steprider on March 27, 2004, 03:55:00 pm
i have a 78 chevy step and i am wanting to lower rear end by removing leaf springs (4 each side) and using shackles. How and which leafs do I remove for a combined 4 inch drop??

I assume you have a heavy Duty rear suspension with more than 4 leafs.  I wouldn't remove more than 3 out of a HD leaf pack.  You can't get 4" of drop out of removing that many leafs and the ride not severely suffering.  You best bet is to get a shackle/hanger kit.

im not really sure if i do have a hd rear end or not. but i do have four leaves on each side. Someone told me I could remove a certain leaf and put a shackle set on and that would give me a 4 inch drop. Just wondering if any knew "which one" or the best candidate for removal so that can happen. I am also lowering the front 2" with the use of drop springs. I have all new drop shocks (nitro) to assist. Thx for the reply!

a shackle and hanger kit is around $100...I would go that route.  It will give you your 4" drop.

Unless you have HD leafs (8 leafs I believe), I wouldn't remove any leafs.
