Hey everyone. My 1973 Chevy k30 keeps almost stalling on me. It does this on both tanks and I thought it was the fuel filter so I changed that and it still seems to do it. The fuel filter ain't stock it has new rubber lines, it also has an edelbrock carb and the high rise intake. I noticed it only does this after its been warmed up and drove for a while. Sometimes I can get it to stop by pushing the clutch in and reving it up a few times. But it will do it again a bit later on. Suggestions? Tips? Things to try? I'll try anything I can and post back after I do.

do you have trouble restarting the truck? if you do then it could be vapor lock.... have you checked the choke if it stays open all the way? sometimes a really dirty carburetor also causes stalling...

i have to agree on vapors in this case, and time. we probably are still using "winter gas" and due to the higher temps the winter gas can and will vaporize and a lower temp then summer gasses. you could try some additives idk what types or how much but a little diesel fuel would raise the vapor point of gas. along with installing a electric pump near the gas tank can help. or just ride it out till we switch to summer gas

Yeah it does take a bit to get it restarted. Got to pump the gas a bit. An I wouldn't doubt it being a dirty carb. It sat in a barn over the winter and I started driving it again just last week. As far as the vapor lock how would I go about checking that?

its just from the temp point at gas will start to vaporize and when this happens its like the fuel pump trys to pump air instead of a liquid so it tens to stumble or stall. i dont know how you can check for one fuel at sea level will vaporize at a higher temp than in the mountains that being said its almost just like water it will boil at 212 degrees but at 15 lbs of pressure it goes to 250 degrees. now fuel is the same way but i dont know that much about it to say for sure but if its under pressure it wont boil as easy this is why fuel injection cars dont really exspearance this problem like we do

It ended up being my fuel pump. It finally just gave out the other day. Eventually I would like to convert it to a electric pump. Anyone have any suggestions or earnings for doing that?

Why do you want to converter to electric? Mechanical are very reliable and cheap.

I agree with 79gmc15, mechanical is easier and cheaper and reliable. Just get a good one like AC Delco and not Airtex.

I have a friend who put an electric pump in his old car and liked it better.
Well since I thought I had the problem fixed I am yet again faced with a new problem! Haha. Now I believe there is something in my gas tank. I am going to drop it this weekend.

Yeah got it now. My tank was rusted on the inside and the sending unit had a hole in the filter so it was sucking rust through my lines and clogging my filters.

I would get a Ho;;ey fuel pump about 75 bucks at summit and a reliable mechanical pump

Does Airtex really suck that badly? What are some other high quality brands?

Yeah airtex left me almost stranded one morning... If it wasn't for my clear fuel filter I wouldn't of found the problem in 5 mins. Spewing had out of the weep hole :-(

Get an acdelco and have no worries . Got mine from rock auto.
