Title: Computer Chip
Post by: gharris79 on April 17, 2013, 07:51:50 am
Has anybody ever chipped their computer in their 1987 1/2ton? My buddy is rebuilding his and is considering doing it. He wants to know if it will make any difference. All i did to mine was a throtle body spacer and headers.

Difference as in more power?  I wouldn't expect anything noticeable from just a chip..

Would it help for fuel economy?

what motor? if you increase power you can ideally increase mpgs, if your not waisting that power i.e. over kill in power or putting the power where its not needed. if you build a motor for low end it will take less effort to get up to speed, and you wont be waisting power if your "cruising speed" is efficient with the rpms.

You can get an EBL ECM from Dynamic EFIs. It will be plug and play. You tell them you ECM part number and they send you a modified ECM. It will allow you to get rid of the chips completely. It will be flashable with a laptop. It has more control than what you get with a chip. It also has a learn mode to be able to get the motor running as efficiently as possible.

The factory ECMs have a "Lean Cruise" mode in them. It leans the fuel and advances the spark during low load cruising. However it is turned off for some reason the government thought it was a bad idea. The EBL turns this feature back on.

I used the EBL on my son's '90 454SS.  I had done heads and cam and intake on it. I could never get it to idle right with chips. I had a couple made. When I went to the EBL I was able to get the idle perfect. It also went from 10 mpg cruising at 70-75 mph to 14.8 mpg. This was a heck of a jump.

The neat thing with the EBL is that you can use nearly any cam you want. Normally this is not possible with a TBI set up.
It can also be used as a NOS controller if you are so inclined.

This is the best piece of info I have gleaned from this board yet! Now I know how to keep my TBI and add a hotter cam and junk these ridiculous factory heads and make it run. Surprisingly affordable too. Well done mike357.
