Title: Has anybody done the 4L60E conversion with the stand alone computer?
Post by: Fairlane514 on May 08, 2013, 09:13:22 pm
After messing with 700R4's and the governor for shifts points and the sensitive TV adjustment, the 4L60E may be a nice improvement. I like the idea of using the computer to dial in your shifts points, firmness etc.  I also believe it will bolt in easily in place of the 700R4. I know you need a TPS and a speedo motor, but all that seems available.

I haven't had any experience with the 4L60 or the stand alone nor do I know anybody. But I believe they are exactly the same length as the truck 700r4. I know the corvette 700r4 had a different length. It should bolt right up though.

Yes, I've been using one few quite a few years. The physical size, shape, ect. is the same. Assuming you have a "later" (30 spline) 700...the torque converter can swap. The driveshaft is a direct fit also.
Here is my TPS sensor mounted up to the Q-jet

For the speed sensor there are a few options. I took what was the most extreme, but felt it was a good way to go. I put a gear on the output shaft & bored a hole in the side of the trans. case & welded in a thread bung from a broken Bravada transfer case. This way, I have the original cable speedometer set-up on the tailshaft & no big money adapter pieces.

I'm using a Baumann controller & it works fine. It is quite dated as far as technology goes, but I've heard they made some updates to the programming since I got mine. I would research thoroughly the different controllers & the features before making a purchase...there seems to be quite a bit of different requirements or features among them.
All in all, it was a great move. Tough to beat being able to tailor the shiftpoints, lockup of the converter, ect. a click at a time & NO transmission fluid in the the hair while doing it! Any questions, Just ask! Lorne

Thanks HAULIN It.....

Did you have to put the TPS on the choke side of the carburetor?

Have to? No...It just made the most sense to me. I had eliminated the choke plate years ago & since there wasn't any other moving parts in the area of the throttle shaft on the Right side, it seemed like a good place.
I've seen guys use a cable, spring, linkage, ect. to operate the TPS 3"-4" away on the Left side.
Really, all you need is a relationship of "throttle closed", "throttle wide open" within the values that can be used by the computer program being given from the sensor...how it sits, is mounted or where, isn't that important . Good Luck, Any other questions...Just ask! Lorne

Which computer did you use?

As mentioned above...I'm using an older Baumann controller. I would research carefully before deciding on the "right" one. There are some features than I wish mine had (line pressure adjustments separate in each gear, more modern linking to the computer, ect.) some of which the newer version from them is to have. Customer support is very good. Lorne
