I found a rear end on CL off a 2003 chevy 1500, I want to swap it on my C10. What will I have to do to get it on there? Change the spacing of the spring and shock mount.
-
You will definitely have to move the shock/spring perches like you said and probably get a different U-joint on the back. Not sure what else you would have to change, curious to find out though.
-
Is it disc or drum brakes? If it's drum you might just be able to swap out the e-brake cables at the backing plate.
-
should be disc
-
another thing is the width yours should be about 63" the 03 is about 66" on the rear, gm made the rears smaller than the front so the rear would track the front. I dont think it would be that big of a problem but then why did gm do this in the first place, the front width of your truck is also about 66"
-
Whats the reason for swapping? What are you trying to accomplish? Lower gear? Posi? Yours blown up?
Alot less hassle to just get the correct rearend with the options your after.

The reason is because I have 2.73 gear now with drum brakes. The axle which I now own has 3.73 gears and disc brakes and a G80 locker. Just an upgrade
-
im unfamiliar with going from disk to drum but dont you have to get a adjustable proportioning valve?
-
I'm not sure what you mean Irish

what im saying is, disk afaik use more pressure than drum, so they might not work or work as good as they should.

so they might not work or work as good as they should.
your right irish. they still "work" not alot, but they still work. you gotta get a master cylinder and proportioning valve that is made for a disc/disc setup and not a disc/drum.
i was gunna do this swap on my truck be i decided not because the expense since you cant just swap.

Don't they make a proportioning valve that "supposedly" fixes the problem? Might not work with the calipers from the truck though.
-
i think they do.. but i haven't had any experience with

i know they make a adjustable one. i would think thats what he needs but i havnt touched or used one to know
-
there is nothing wrong with front disc/rear drum. You won't notice a big difference if you do the swap. If you were somehow going to integrate ABS then by all means swap to disc. You would notice more of a difference if you get some quality "blank" rotors up front with some nice ceramic pads.

i think he wanted to change ratios, saw this axle and thought win win

im guessing this as well. wouldnt it just be easier to swap gears then do a whole axle swap?
-
na cause you have to get everything just right shims and you need special tools. it would be better if he could find one that is out of one of our trucks so its the right width and its a bolt in application
-
I did figure that'd it would be easier just to do an axle swap. Irish was right, I saw the gear ratio that I needed, and I figured this was something that I could do. I also saw that it has an autolocker. Win win is what was going on in my mind.
So, master cylinder and a proportioning valve is what I need. I'll add it to the list.
