Title: Speaker selection
Post by: Silverado1979 on May 17, 2013, 12:03:13 pm
Hi guys. My truck currently has an AM only stereo with 1 dash speaker setup. I have just bought An Am/FM cassette stock stereo and want to get a good set up going. Since I do not want to mess with my doors I was wondering if there was a way to fit two smaller speakers where the dash speakers belong or if there was a better place for front speakers. I am going to put two back speakers behind the seat. This is not the most well thought out setup ever, but I'm just curious if it would work. Thanks guys.

there are holes in the dash, and dash pad for front speakers, i think 3inch tweeters on each side. then you can put some speakers in the cab corners or behind the seat.

In my '74 Chevy, I put two speakers (3" I think) up in the center dash hole and then two 4x10's in the cab corners using stock cab corner speaker brackets from an 80's Chevy truck.  I had to make a metal adapter bracket/panel to mount my front speakers into the location of the original dash speaker, but didn't take any photos of the assembly.

You might do a search for the posting from 78 Chevyrado where he shows how he placed his two front speakers in the dash center speaker opening.

My dad did this years ago.  He bought a speaker that had both channels for stereo that fit perfectly in the spot for the original single mono speaker.  They're still available, both as a dual front speaker assembly for use in single speaker openings, and as a dual voice coil speaker.  Personally, I think the first one would be the better of the two.

Thanks guys. What type of wattage do these delco stereos put out? I feel like I could easily kill this thing with good sized mid-ranges in the back.

just got my speakers in today.. im putting a dual voice coil, so two speakers, speaker in the old 10inch single speaker spot up front and running my front left and right speaker outs on my radio to those, then im branching off a planet audio tweeter on each side of the dash in the 3inch holes from each side of the 10inch speaker. it should work nicely. so thats also another good option for you.

I ordered some speakers and I pretty much know what I'm Doing now. Two 2 1/2 in full range woofers up front in the center dash hole and two 5 in full range acoustic instrument woofers in the cab corners. Delco radio no amp. Should sound pretty nice.

For others that are interested (like me) you might take photos and post your findings when you're done.
