Title: Not exactly sure where this goes...Heater Core Hose/Pipe
Post by: ehjorten on May 31, 2013, 09:07:08 am
Okay...so on my '91 Crew the header core started leaking!  No drips, but you can turn on the defrost and open the heat and you can smell a sweet smell.  It also has started to fog the windshield in the morning!!

So...I got a new heater core yesterday and generally when I do this I get new hoses too.  So...I was looking for a place that sells Gates Green Stripe heater hose.  I found a place and last night I go to measure my 3/4" and 5/8" line lengths on the truck.  I never realized that the 3/4" hose is actually about a 2' length of hose that is crimped onto a bend length of pipe that has a nut on the end, and it bolts into the back of the intake manifold!  This is a 454 truck.  Crap!!!

I go looking on RockAuto.com and do some google searches to see if I can find that Pipe/Hose assembly.  I'm not coming up with anything!

I am going to call the local Chevrolet dealer when they open this morning, but I thought I would put it out there to the community...Does anyone have experience with this and know where I can get a new hose?  I could probably reuse this one if necessary, but it is a 22 year old hose.  The 5/8" hose is just a straight section of hose with clamps, so no problem there!

How about changing the fitting on the manifold so you can use a clamp there?  In that vein, does something like this help?

Called my local Chevrolet Parts Department this morning and the part is discontinued, but apparently still available at a discontinued parts warehouse.  I'm going to stop by the dealer at lunch and take a look at the picture before I buy it.

I'm going to try and do a full write-up on this one with pictures of how to remove, recondition and re-install the heater box.  Not sure how long it will take as everything is taking a back seat to me building my shop.  I think about working on the brakes on the Chevelle and replacing the heater core in the crew, but then I think about the time I wouldn't be pounding nails on the shop!

you can use that nipple posted or one like it then (https://www.carpartsdiscount.com/auto/archive/pictures/138989/600/1/P/56302BE/chevy_v3500_1991_gates_hvac_heater_hose_shaping_coil_3_4_i_d_oem_gat_28512_gat28512.jpg) to get the bend you want. also be careful that stock quick connects are notorious for breaking off in the manifold
