Title: Exhaust suggestions?
Post by: Ch3vy_Guy95 on June 05, 2013, 03:48:18 pm
Hey all, I have a "73 k30 with the 454. I have long tube headers and right now it's straight piped back to the bed and that's it. It's louder then heck and I like it and all, but I want to do something to tone it down a bit. I want to keep it sounding low and decently loud. I had two glass packs on it but that didn't sound to great, not sure if its because they were old or what but I want some suggestions for a good sounding set up. I would prefer it be just an add on not a whole system, I don't have a lot of money to throw at it. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

What about Flowmasters or a similar chambered type mufflers.  Some of the off brands can run from about $30-40 each and will go up from there.

a x pipe will help with sound. my buddys work truck just had cats on it it would pop and was pretty loud. we just put on a 3" x pipe and it tones it down allot more than i thought it would. now its still loud just not as much as before. and we both having kids now its just loud enough to be heard but not to wake the kids

I have heard about the x pipe idea, don't it make it a more smooth growel? And does it matter how far back my pipes go? I'm thinking about runing out each side in front of the back axle.

A cross over does wonders for canceling the pulses..

from my experience you dont have much room because of transmission and driveshaft to run a x-pipe and still have enough room to come out in front of the rear tire. it does get rid of the high pitch sound

On the 73 k30 I don't think you have to have catalytic converters. Stock mufflers sound good and are of a high quality. Not too loud but has a good low thump.

I think the stock replacements are kind of expensive though. I think they are stainless.

I might run it behind the axle then. I just want it to be a deep growel more then anything. Should I leave it straight piped or throw maybe a glass or a thrush muffler or something of the sorts?

Those do sound really nice. Would it still sound good if I put the x pipe with a set of these?

Not really fan of Flowmasters.  I really like the sound of my '77 K20 with the Hooker AeroChamber mufflers.  It has a fairly deep, mild sound at idle, but really raps at full throttle.  Hard to explain, but I really like it.

Is there any way you can post a vid of your setup? I had been contemplating on those as well. These summit race muffs are cool but I still wanna go deeper in tone:-)  thanks

you want to have some sort of ballancer in the exhaust x or h pipe something it will help with the back pressure.

I kinda want it low and loud kinda like this truck, but something maybe cheaper then magna flows? If that's possible. If not I will spend the money.

I have a 2.5" pipe and headers, no cats or anything. Does not having cats make a difference? And is an h or x pipe better?

the x pipe is better but the h pipe is better than nothing most time "H" are used when there is not enough room to run the "x". the cat i think has a lot to do with the way your set up. when first got my 86 i gut the pipe right before the cat mad it louder but wanted more so i removed the cat. then i noticed it was loud but lost a lot on take off. i mean not just a little but a lot.

I have no problem with take off, it's the top end that it kinda lags and it was better when I had the glass packs on it but I wanted to make it loud ha bad choice of mine.
