Title: What kind of transmission?
Post by: Z71Gladiator on June 21, 2013, 05:39:35 pm
How do I find what kind of transmission I have and will a 350 small block transmission bolt right up to a 454 big block

The truck is a 76 k10 4x4 with a 350 and standard transmission.

The transmission has 3 regular drive speeds plus granny gear.

The granny gear is where 1st gear normally is at the top left.

A TH350 will bolt up to small block, big block and IL6 all have the same bolt pattern.

You can id a chevy transmission by the pan in most cases.  Google chevy transmission identification or something similar and you should get pictures of pans.  If you are putting a big block in you may want to start hunting down a built transmission for the purpose.  I think a th400 is the only trans I would trust in stock form behind a big block.

To answer your question you are describing a SM465 manual transmission with the granny low

Yes, your describing a SM465 trans. The 454 will bolt up to the bellhousing without any problems. One concern you will have to deal with is the flywheel...the 350 engine has an internal balance & the 454 is external balance. Lorne

Auto trans ID's are in the tech pages:
