Title: Bad Ignition Switch?
Post by: ChaseDale3and8 on July 07, 2013, 08:50:59 pm
I have a quick question. I just got my '86 K10 running today after its been sitting over a year. The battery is brand new but was dead as a hammer when I got the trans transfer case back in today. I noticed the choke light was on continually and this may have been related to the battery going dead. A littl while ago my neighbor came over and wanted to hear it run so I started it up. When I went to shut it off I turned the switch all the way back but it kept running! Wouldn't shut off! I killed it with the clutch but I hated to do that! I got to thinking about it and now thinking maybe the switch has gone bad? What do you guys think? ...Joe

Something isn't wired correctly and it may be contributing to the dead battery.

I checked everything that I had to disconnect to pull the trans down and everything looks okay. I only disconnected the transfer case wires, back up lights for the transmission, oil sending unit ( had to remove it so it wouldn't get damaged) and the starter (had to remove to get to the clutch fork) and that was all the wiring I disconnected. I re checked everything again today. Now the switch turns it on and off again like its supposed to but now the choke light stays off until the truck is running then it comes on and stays on. And now I have a new problem since the choke light started working in reverse. It blows the gage fuse as soon as the switch is turned on. I've looked everywhere but can't find any loose or broken wires. One thing that I did do when I reassembled it was to put some Teflon tape around the oil pressure sending unit threads so it wouldn't leak any oil. Could this cause this sort of problem? .....Joe

How much did you put on it.  Generally those are tapered and don't need anything to seal them.

Probably more than it needed. Didn't want any oil leaks. Guess ill take it back out and take the tape off and see if that does anything. ...Joe

did you happen to pinch the wires that run on top of the firewall between the engine and transmission bell housing? could this have been the reason you couldn't get the transmission to seat right?

I checked that as well but couldn't find anything there either. When I had to change the clutch fork the bell house had to come off. I had previously when I put this engine in late last summer put all new conduit around the outside of all the wiring from the firewall all the way over to the starter. If I had pinched it I'd never have gotten  the bell house up to the block. Also it has that little bracket that holds it all to the back of the bell house and I'd already seated the other bolts down by that point so I know that whole deal was good to go. As a precaution though I checked all of it yesterday just to make sure since I'm running out of ideas. The only other thing that comes to mind is the Teflon tape I put around the oil pressure sending unit.

This whole thing is weird since it feels like I'm chasing an electrical gremlin. First the choke light is on all the time. Then the truck won't shut off. Now the choke light works in reverse, switch works, but no gauges, and if I put a new fuse in for the guages the fuse blows quick as you turn on the key. I'm baffled. I've checked the grounds too. Couldn't find anything there either. Electrical has never been my strong point. I wouldn't think the Teflon tape would do that, but maybe it's not making a good ground for the guages now? I don't know but I'd sure like to get this figured out and fixed. ......Joe

I would start on the circuit that is blowing the fuse.  where does it go and is there power on it all the time?

Changing the tape out is a minor issue compared to fuses blowing.
