Title: Marine Clean from POR15 - Don't get on paint!
Post by: bladerunner on July 08, 2013, 06:45:50 pm
So I have been undercoating my truck lately and I had a bit of a lazy day yesterday so I decided to clean up the sill section under my hood where the hood latch is (not sure the actual name for that area). It had a lot of surface rust. So I first took some Marine Clean, a degreaser from POR15 to it.  Then I quickly realized it was running down the front of the truck on the painted area of the body just behind the front bumper (again not sure if that area has a name or not). My paint is in pretty good shape overall, still very shiny. But this Marine clean turned it very dull very quickly and the paint started to "pill" a bit. I tried to wash it up but it just removed the paint in sections down to the primer. None to happy  :'(

It really is a small area, just that small "bumperette" behind my chrome front bumper, so I might spring and have it repainted. Funny thing is, Marine Clean on the bottle says you can use it on painted surfaces. I am here to tell you DON'T. In fact it might work really good as a paint remover.

So I might swing by and ask my local body guy for an estimate and pray it is not too much.  On the topic of paint, the only complaints I have about my paint job are the striped tape used to separate the silver and black in my two tone paint job) silver is the top half and black the bottom. The tape is peeling away in sections.  Is that something easily done by a body shop or will it require significant work to correct?

I'm assuming you are talking about the upper radiator support and you got it on the lower valance. What year is the truck? pix?

It's an 85 and I believe you got the part names right. The valance looks like it unbolts pretty easily. I think I can unbolt it, clean it up and take it the shop for painting. I do not have pictures as of yet.

If it is black it really isn't "painted" as what was done to the metal.  But I typically don't put that on anything except rust or bare metal.

Chris - I assume you mean the valance and not the radiator support? I looked online and noticed you can buy new valances and they are already black (and pretty cheap at $20).

Re-read what you posted.  The painted portion behind the bumper is the lower valence.

Depends on color And if you remove it. At our shop if you brought it in and I just had to sand prep and paint it then $45+/-  depending on color
