Title: alternator bolts
Post by: PromiseKeeper on July 19, 2013, 04:50:30 pm
I'm putting together a basket case.... and don't have the bolts to mount the alternator in a 1980 305. Could anyone out there give me the sizes that I need? Thanks!

You can pick up a cheap alternator bracket and bolt kit from the a/p stores in chrome. Might be cheaper than running around trying to find the bolts and brackets piece by piece.

or even a junk yard. not saying steel one but you never know what they just might let you have ;-). had a yard once give me the rod that goes from the turn signal to the dimmer switch in a 89 chevy. i told them what it was she just laughed and said you can have that.

If you have the bracket and just need the bolt sizes, so you can get the bolts at a hardware store, I can look them up for you.  It's an involved process of cross-references to get to it, so let me know.  If you need the brackets and the bolts, the junkyard is easiest.

Let's see if this works.  This is the relevant page from the 1978 parts book.  All sizes are listed.  This is for all gas engines, and should be the same for your '80.

after getting that info, I was able to get the long bolt for 33 cents! Had everything else and found out I didn't need the spacer I thought I did.... I just hope I can give back half as much knowledge as I've gained here.

That's what it's all about.  The various truck forums guided me through all my mods and restores, and I search the archives constantly.  We're a lot better together than we are separately.
