Howdy all.
the other day I noticed that the temp gauge on my 86 was pegged to the right. It was working fine a day before. I checked the sending unit and noticed that the wire had made a small contact with the exhaust manifold and shorted. So, problem solved right? Nope, its still pegged with no other obvious sign of contact any where. So my question, do I have a hidden short or bad gauge now? Thanks in advance
( and yes I know I can pull the cluster and do a continuity check but if its a chance of another short under the hood, I'd rather avoid pulling the cluster atm)

The simple solution, if there is one, is a grounded signal wire anywhere between the gauge and the temp sensor, or a faulty sensor. Additionally, verify your I/P grounds. If necessary, you can use "Functional Tests of Factory GM Electric Gauges" (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,25339.0.html) and the 1986 Wiring Manual (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/techinfo/7387CKMans//Wiring/ST_352_86_1986_Chevrolet_GMC_Light_Truc_Wiring_Manual_CK_10_30_Only.pdf) to help you get your arms around a more in-depth diagnosis.
