Well, my truck has encountered another problem. It turns over and starts but immediately dies. I popped the hood and tried starting again, and I saw smoke coming from the engine compartment. I think it's actually coming from wires that aren't even connected to the engine, so I'm guessing I need to just rewire the whole truck. Any idea what I should buy and how much it would cost? Plus how long would it take me to do? I've never rewired a truck before. '73 C30 350 SBC 4 speed Muncie Transmission.

before you go and buy a whole wiring loom for your truck and invest a lot of money, you should try to see if you can isolate the problem and fix it first!

What's under the hood??? If you have to ask maybe we shouldn't race...

The smoke was probably from fusible links connected at the starter. BTDT.

could the smoke be coming from the starter? does it still turn over and run for a second?

I agree with both these statements. Will your truck still start at all ? The battery first routes to the starter bolt, then on the same bolt it connects to the ignition switch and the rest of the truck through all the safety's such as fuseable links.
If you found out where the problem is, you might only have to buy a specific part to the wiring harness will will save you a lot of money and time.
