Title: Shifter Not Working Right
Post by: JGibson on September 24, 2013, 02:50:05 pm
The shifter in my truck needs to be adjusted/fixed and I have the slightest idea of how to do it. Right now it it very hard to pull out of Park and to put back into Park. The Backup light works but only in Neutral. The Trans is a 700R4 (OD), not the original. Anyone have some thoughts on how I can fix this? If I have not given enough info please let me know, more than happy to give more. Thanks.

Has it always did this? Did you do the swap?  There isn't any adjustment in a auto linkage.

I didn't do the swap so I'm unsure if it always did it or not  :-\ It actually feels like it is in a bind somewhere but I can't see anything that would put it in one.

There is one point of wear/adjustment on an a/t linkage. It is the only "joint" underneath the truck I can recall, and it can generate some slop and thus binding. The only real adjustment affects the relationship of what gear the transmission is in and what the indicator shows in the cab. I've had them out enough that the shifter wont drop all the way into park or will hit park fine but won't go into L1. At the point of adjustment, there are shims/bushings/spacers that allow the joint to operate..if they are worn, the shifter could bind up when it hits odd angles. May or may not actually be the problem.

The indicator in the cab is just a matter of moving the clip to the correct position.
