I was finishing up changing a gasket on my truck it has a 700R4 transmission...non electronic. It has the piece on the left side with two wires coming out of it. Would this be the switch for reverse that turns the reverse lights on? New to this transmission...can anyone chime in on this? Will take a pic tomorrow.

oh yeah the truck is a 76 stepside C10 but the engine trans is out of blazer from the early 80's...i think.

No, The reverse light switch is on the base of the steering column inside the cab. What your describing sounds like one on the versions of converter lock-up solenoids. Lorne

can you elaborate a lil more i am not familiar with that device. I will take a pic tomorrow and post it. I have been wanting to hook my reverse lights but i have a B&M shifter.

If you have a floor mounted B&M shifter, you will have to get the reverse switch for the B&M (or make one), that when you put it into reverse it activates the switch ( inside the B&M shifter assy.). Then hook it to your reverse lights system so they activate when you shift into reverse.
As Lorne was saying, on a column shifter, the reverse switch is at the base of the column, when you put it into reverse a rod attached to the column shifter activates the reverse switch which in turn supplies power to your reverse light system.

As for the wires..I highly recommend using them if you really want the 700 to be of any benefit. It is relatively simple to do just a little time consuming.

The plug on the side of the 700r4 are for the lockup inside the torque converter, as stated. If you don't hook them up you could shorten your transmission's life. A lot of extra heat is generated without the lockup engaged at higher speeds.

FYI, this was the original intention for the lock up...cooling..
