Title: Whats a popular limited slip diff ?
Post by: ian75c10 on October 20, 2013, 08:07:17 pm
Hey guys. My 75 c10 just got upgraded with a 700r4. I have 4.10 gears in there and I have 30" tall tires. Its not too bad and fun to drive but I want to pop in a 3.73 for total perfection. I want to go with a limited slip posi and am hoping to get some opinions from you all on what are the most popular units. Also what are the most affordable and are the cheaper ones good? Thanks

The one that came on my 78 is an Eaton Gov-Lock.  You can probably pick one up salvage.  The listings mostly don't tell you whether or not it's a locker, you'll have to call.  Bunch of them around though.  Guy in Fairbanks for sure has a locker in 3.73.

Aren't the gov-locks the least desirable? I'm not sure I just feel like I had read that somewhere today.

My understanding is that they can be fragile if abused.  I haven't had any problems, and have managed to spin the rears on occasion.

Its that right turn burnout that will make them go boom... If abused.

What's under the hood??? If you have to ask maybe we shouldn't race...

Well, that makes sense.  A right-hand turn needs the secondary drive wheel to go faster then the primary around the corner, and with the axle locked, that's gonna maximize the stresses.  A left-hand turn wouldn't do it, since the secondary drive wheel is going slower then the primary in that direction.

Anyway, mine is 35 years old, has 150,000+ miles on it, and has given me no trouble at all.  YMMV.

I had a gov loc. It was garbage, locked up on me going down the road with no warning signs, not impressed. Dumped it and got an auburn clutch style. Eaton also makes a good unit too.

Have you thought about lock-right locker? Pop out the spider gears, put in the full time guts and done. Yes its a full time locker not a limited slip, yes, there maybe some accelerated wear on your tires on the street and yes they can sometimes be a little noisy but in the big scope of things you'll probably not even notice..,,

Eaton is good because you can rebuild it unlike the Auburn. Mine is a Yukon brand eaton style, I got it from Quick Performance.

When the Gov-Lok on my '74 K10 locked up (no warning symptoms), I rebuilt the rearend and used an Eaton limited slip.

Well Auburn is good because unlike Eaton you don't have to rebuild them. I prefer the Auburn Gear units, smooth and powerful, no clutch chatter and I've been using them since I was 19 years old. That was 19 years ago and I've never broken one.
