Hey Guys. My name is Quillan. Brand new to the site. 30 yrs old.
I drive a station wagon. But love cool cars/trucks. I have been watching this 85 k10 shortbed, nice red paint, 4" lift, sit on the street for a few weeks. It clearly got hit while parked. Minimal damage, bent rear axle, some body damage to the bed. I leave a note on the windshield asking if he wants to sell it. Calls me the next day tells me it has to be gone by 10 am or the city is going to tow it and he doesn't have the money. So he says i can have it for free. (i ended up giving me $300 for it because it's worth it).
So i have new (old) 12 bolt rear end in her from a '79 blazer. Turns out the u-joint doesn't fit. I pull the u-joint yolk (or carrier) off both the 12 bolt and the 10 bolt hoping to swap them. doesn't work. I read a little bit (which i should have done in the first place!) and find out i just need a u-joint conversion.
Can someone please tell me what PN i need? I will search this site next (now that I'm allowed to as member), but if anyone knows it, that would be awesome.
Also, i removed the nut that held the u-joint yolk (or carrier) to the diff. it was torqued on there VERY tight. Is there anything special i need to do when reinstalling it? Just torque it?
Any info would be much appreciated!!

What's under the hood??? If you have to ask maybe we shouldn't race...

welcome from maryland. cant confirm the u joint number but if you go to napa get them to use their books they can tell you what number you need

Thanks 454. Ya, super lucky! It has an '87 350, nothing too special. but it runs! i would like to upgrade it at some point in the future. I'm guessing you have a 454 under the hood??

Thanks. Do you know if there is any special process when re-installing the u-joint yolk to the diff? When i pulled it off (unnecessarily) it was torqued on VERY tight. My dad seems to think it has to go back on with an impact gun, and torquing it to the spec (X ft-lbs) won't due. Sounds crazy, but i don't want to take any chances.

I got me one stashed :-) I originally sought out to have a 454 as my daily, but wises up quickly as mpg it's a Lil of my concern. Soon as I get that 2014 Chevy a 454 will reside under this hood then 7Mpgs will be ok. I still burn rubber on the low end

there's a crush sleeve in the dif. your not supposed to remove the yoke without replacing the sleeve unless you make a line up mark. i dont want to give bad advise on this so i will try to find the answer on what you can do we have talked about it on here a couple times

You need to witness mark the pinion nut to the yoke and to the pinion shaft before removing it. The only way to properly retighten the nut is to remove the axles and the differential carrier. Then you can measure pinion turning torque to know if the bearings are properly preloaded. Otherwise at this point you're pretty much guessing.

Awesome, thanks so much Irish_Alley, for finding that. stop the water this doesn't sound good. I'll see if i can get that thread going again with Vile and see if i can get some more info. I was really hoping i could just install the yolk back on and the new u-joint conversion.
