What did the typical stock truck have for speakers. I was told two 4x10s in the back cab corners with three under the dash? I believe there's two 3.5 with a 6x9 upfront in the middle is that correct. Has anyone installed three in the front thanks. Any recommendation on number of speakers

OE stereos employed two 4x10s in the cab corners behind the seat and two 3.5s in the top of the dash in front of the driver and passenger. OE monophonics employed a single
6x9 4x10 in the top center of the dash.
As for recommendations, it depends on how you like your music to sound, how much you're willing to spend and/or how much effort you're willing to invest. Four locations for mids/tweeters (two front, two rear) and one or two subs behind the seat seem to be the most popular combos and deliver the best sound overall. Searching "stereo" and "speakers" on this site should provide hours of reading material. Sound systems are a hot topic.

On my 1985 the center speaker is a 4x10 for the mono AM factory radio

Never saw one with a 6x9 in the dash all of them were 4x10's
-
You're both right! Don't know what I was thinking. 4x10 was the factory size in the center dash.

I have a Highliner headliner with 4 Kicker DS400s in it, and a Lanzar powered subwoofer between the seats. See adjacent thread.
I like this setup a lot, and it was pretty easy, with no mods to the interior of the truck.

ive got two 12inch subs behind my back seat, two 6x9's in the cab corners, and DUAL voice coil 4x10 in the center that branches out on each side to 3 inch tweeters. sounds amazing.

Rich,
Did you modify the high liner for the 4 kickers or is that what it cam with?

They came like that, see highliner headliner webpage here (http://www.jcwhitney.com/dashtop-highliner-headliner/p2023838.jcwx).

Neither. It came with crappy speakers, which mounted from behind. I removed them with extreme prejudice, cutting the baskets up with tin snips and pulling the pieces though the holes. I then mounted Kicker DS-400s from the front using U-type speed nuts. No modifications required.

actually my 79 center speaker hole was smaller than my 80s idk why but had to do some fab work to make them the same size. it was about 1" smaller
