Title: SM465 only goes into Low and 1st gears

Hey guy's got a question, my SM465, which is in an 89 V3500 Crew cab with a 454 and I believe NP205, wont go into 2nd or 3rd gear nor will it go into reverse. I have the tranny out but now I need to get the top cover off and everywhere I read, I need to have it in reverse to do so. Anyone have any other ideas as to how I can get the top cover off so I can inspect it and see what needs replaced? I appreciate any help I could get.

I have never had any trouble getting the top off. Just take the bolts out and off it comes.

You don't necessarily need to be in reverse to pull the cover, but putting it back on is easier with it partially in reverse.

If you do a search online there are several places that have the SM465 overhaul manual posted.
