Title: Yet another 5 speed question
Post by: friscobob on December 05, 2013, 03:37:40 pm
I can pick up a 5 speed from a 93 Chev 1500 with a V6.
Has anyone ever put that 5 speed in a 81 C 10 that has a 250 inline 6 in it? What issues are there? I've read most of the 5 speed post for the last several years and most are about SB & BB.
Thanks Friscobob

Fairly popular swap on Inlines.  Your main issues would be the hydraulic actuation, crossmember mounting and driveshaft.  Is it a manual now?

Should bolt right up. Bell housing pattern will be the same.

The '93 uses a hydraulic clutch, and you can't remove the bell housing to place a mechanical linkage in it.

You may be able to modify the existing bell. Either that or look for the clutch pedal out of a 85~87(91)

One word of caution(actually several).  If you do the swap, 5th gear will be useless to you with an I-6 and typical stock gears.  I test drove a V-6 85-6ish that was originally a 3 speed column shift.  The glove box said it had a 2.73 gear.  The speedo wasn't hooked up and I was going at a pretty good clip in 4th gear rpm wise and shifted to 5th.  It couldn't maintain the speed and lugged the engine down to have to go back to 4th.  I was not impressed and I assume that is why it was being sold as is without the speedometer working.

I want to swap in a 5 speed, but don't want to go to a hydraulic clutch, rather stay with linkage as the pedals are already in place. In the next few days I'll check which ratio rear end I have. I just sold a P U with a Saginaw 3 speed with OD, mayhaps I should have kept that.

What year was the truck you just sold.  81 on up used a New Process A833 as their 3 speed + OD.  The last Saginaw 3 speed + OD I saw was in a 66 C10, OD used a switch if I remember correctly

Just sold a 67 with factory installed 3 speed Saginaw with O D. Yes, they had several switches of one sort or another.
