Been a while fellas, just been so busy and then I got very sick for the last 5 months or so...
The 78 C20's doing fine, no new projects on it, and no new damage either. ;D It just hums along like a top!
Onto the question... Is it even possible to find out where my old 77 truck is nowadays? It was my first vehicle. I miss it.
I'd like to try to find my old '77 and possibly buy it back. I'm thinking now it may be impossible.
I still have the VIN and Such. Actually I have every paper ever for that truck from the dealership at new till I sold it.
I tried to do a VIN search and all the sites require the new 17 digit VINs or it doesn't work. I'm feelin hopeless now.
VIN# is CCL147A194934.
I sold it in 2002, and in 2003 sometime I last saw it driving around Another city about 35 miles from me, but that's it. nothing else till now. Its not on the NCIB's list as stolen or totalled, but ya know that doesn't say a whole lot.
I'll get over it, just the system is screwin me over again... if you don't own a car with a 17 digit VIN everything from tags to insurance and everything gets harder...
Any help appreciated guys
Thanks,
Kenny

It is probably long gone, my suggestion is to build one just like it...

It is probably long gone, my suggestion is to build one just like it...
Awww, I know, but I hoped yall wouldn't say it and I wouldn't think it... ;)
It's not a huge deal to me, unless it happened, then it would be huge, It's just a lofty thought I dream about some days... :)
-
You can try to have the VIN run by a police officer if you know one to see if it is still registered in your state. I know there should be a paper trail if it is still current. I remember back in 1987 I moved to Indiana and all out of state vehicles required a VIN check. My VIN on my 72 K20 didn't match the title on 1 or 2 digits. Back then everything was hand written. The mistake was 2 owners ago in AZ where the truck originally came from which was info I wasn't aware of...
-
unless it has been wrecked, then it is probably still floating around. because it is pre-81 it WILL be harder to find because it doesn't have a standard vin.
-
I don't know any cops anymore. So I'm kinda at a roadblock. Will tell ya one funny thing my mom said today. My mom n dad bought the truck new off the lot and she said if I do find it I may have to fight her to determine if she or I gets to keep it. :)
My mom loves that truck as much as I do. It's her favorite vehicle they've ever had. Well it's my most vehicle I've ever had too.
Actually she went with me when I sold it, it went in trade to a ford dealer where I got my focus ZTS. She said it right when we were leaving the lot in my new car, and left my truck behind, she said she felt like we just had a beloved dog put down... So The new focus i'd gotten was needed and It's a great car, I've just always felt a lil bit of betrayal in there to leaving my truck at "some dealer"... Financially it was right and worked in my favor big time... But I still miss my truck sometimes very badly.
Yall know how pretty and tough and cool my 78 c20 is... YES IT IS, but it's NOT my 77. I'd never get rid of the 78, but it'd be so cool to have em both someday. sitting side by side again, like they used to be.
But even if I find it, I dunno if i get to keep it... Cuz my mom told me today if i find it she wants it restored and it to be her truck. she lives next door to me. and now i think if i do find it, it will be hers. but either way I don't wanna find it any less. Cuz she'd let me drive it anytime. My mom n dad can drive any of my vehicles anytime they want, and they let me drive theirs anytime i want... soI'd love to find that truck.
If I cannot find my truck, ill prolly skip out on the whole thing, but if I could find mine, I'd buy it back even at fairly unreasonable cost.
-
Just a memorandum for my truck... 1977 C10 Chevy Sport. Rollbar was stock.
When I last Had it... Bout 6 mos before I sold it...
Traded it for this... After yellowing the tires n lowering. It has been an excellent car. no question there. It was worth it.
Me, 3 yrs old behind the truck, with my grandad in the background. (the grandad I got my 78 from). my 78 still lives in the center bay of that very same garage today.
Me, 3.5 yrs, with my old 77, at grandad's house. my 78 was at that time behind the middle garage door.
So while I'm not dead set to find it, but I'd so love to. I don't care how bad the condition. I'd buy it for a probably unreasonable price just to have it back. It's my first love, far as vehicles go.
When I was 15 or 16, I could have had my parents 69 mustang, but I'da rather of had the truck... and that mustang was a hotrod...

Both my fav trucks have ever been, in same spot, different times.
2001
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t195/wes2880/77%20C10/LeftFront2.jpg)
2007 my trucks changed a lot since 2007 but here it is back in '07

Any chance you could get any info on who bought it when you traded it in and do some detective work of your own?
Would love to see you get it back.
-
I probably could, but it would be costly, as I know no one in the know in my state. I don't wanna spend $$$ just to find out it was scrapped or crushed.
I'm pretty po'd all these sites only go back to '81 or so with their 17 digit vin. there were more cars made withOUT the 17 digit vin then with. but it's an old car so eh to the devil with it... (heavy sarcasm)... Right after this hunting of my old vin, i watched a counting cars where they refound a guys firebird off an old VIN. dunno whjat they did but i bet im not willing to pay that money for them to find it for me. I want it, but not at a stupid price. maybe a really dumb price, but not stoopid. :)
Here's what I find on sites about such things...
Tracking down a pre-1981 car by its VIN is made even more difficult by the federal Drivers Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), which limits access to DMV or DOT records. Further compounding this difficulty is the fact that DMVs often purge older records to make way for new records. With limited records and limited access to those records, finding a pre-1981 car by its VIN is a formidable task.
I'd put $200-$500 on finding it but that's it and it better be real dang good info.
-
I managed to find at expense, that, the truck was last titled in GA (dunno where) april of 2013.
Even if I don't find it I'm elated it's still on the road by this time. That was such a good truck, it may never die. It was a good one, went way better than most. truck was surprising in most ways.
-
what i would do. is go to the dmv. tell them you just "purchased" a 77 c20 CCL147A194934. the problem is it came with no title "lost title" and you want to get a bill of sale from the owner
or skip all that
and fill these out. you need to fill them both out. the mv20 is your request for information
http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/TitleSection/forms/pdf/MV_Motor_Vehicle_Data_Request_Form_MV20.pdf
its only $1 for tag/title/lien info and $5 for title history
and the mv20a is saying why you want that info
http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/forms/pdf/motor/MV_Subpoena_or_Information_Request_Form_MV20A.pdf
and send my paypal $200 ;-) good luck
-
dang. Tell you what Irish... If I find everything out, you will get your $200. You will have earned it.
My dad recalled my mom used to know some cops n judges, and I should press her to find them and call in some favors. I'ma try it. if your way works Irish, you'll get $200. No foolin.
I wawnt ma truck back. I'm getting a huge bug about this too. we'll see how it goes...
-
Let us know how it goes. It's not exactly legal, but I was a police officer not too long ago in my town and might be able to get the vin ran for you. I haven't asked any of them yet, though.
-
lol no money needed, just seeing someone happy if something works out and they appreciate my help is all i need. at work some of us have access to tag/vin info BUT even if you check you own info they will bring you in and ask questions. in most cases you get fired. all that being said if you still want to pay me. i hate to turn down money, but you could donate $25 to capt so i can get my "Site Supporter" tag back;D
-
Have you found your truck. I wrote down the vin from above and will get your info if you still need it.
-
I haven't found anything new yet. I got hurt and my parents cuz went through serious surgery recently so I kina forgot bout the truck and we're helping him get through his ordeal.
Any help you guys can give I'd love to have!
-
guys at advance asked me earlier if I needed any help... I said I need lots of help, but I can find the parts I need on my own...lol ;)
-
Haven't found it yet. I don't know how it has been searched, but it is not coming up. What state are you in?
-
Kenny, what about putting a want-add in the Atlanta and Gainsville Craigs List for a 77?
-
I'm in GA, In Barrow county.
I got pretty sick the last couple a weeks so I haven't done anything else yet.
I'm just now getting back to not normal but muddle-through-it-able...lol
That's a good idea about the craigslist... I may try that. I just hope its still a cheap truck and somebody hasn't fixed it all up like mine where I can't afford it. don't take that the wrong way... im not saying I hope its been uncared for (tho a lil bit I am) if its been redone and somebody loves it I'd be content with that, truly.
Me n my mom were talking today about it and we both feel even if its junky, we'd like to have it even if it just sits and rusts away under our oak trees. some of you would understand that... my mom misses it as much as me, it was her fav vehicle she's ever had when her and dad had it, just like its mine cuz it was my first. I never heard one person make fun or if even when it was faded and rusty... its kind of that magic truck that everybody though was cool as heck no matter its condition.
-
any ideas how to list the truck statewide, in craigslist, I'd like to not have to put an add under every city it lists, tho I will if I must.
-
You have to go to each area and post a wanted ad unfortunately. Word the title slightly different or it will flag you, been there done that. Good luck in your search
-
Good luck in your quest! I do know how a favorite can get under your skin and nag at you for years. I've had a few those over the years. My first car was a '68 Chevelle SS 396 with 4 speed and Posi, It was a tire lifter lifter. Won a heck of a lot of free beer with it. I put a full beer under the front left tire about ten inches in front and bet I could drive over it without crushing it. I won that bet about 3/4 of time.
The next favorite was a 74 Monte Carlo with a factory 454 and t400 with facxtory slapstick with 12 bolt and 4.10 gears with posi. With a little smog junk removal a good set of Hooker headers and a recurved distributor it ran high 14's at the track at about 104 mph. It would have done much better a an 1/8 mile but we didn't have one near St Louis at the time.
And my third favorite is why I'm here. My '78 K15 GMC swb. It ended up with a 6" lift, 39" Mickey -T's (Tall Baja Belted), traction control, sm465 trans and a 205. That truck was near unstoppable for what I did with it (Mostly river running or mountain trails after I moved to Colorado from Missouri.
So the truck I have now is supposed to be re-incarnation of that old truck. In reality it will never happen that way. I have the wrong year for one.
So I do hope you can find your ride again. Farmers find their old tractors pretty frequently around here although tractors are not driven all over the country either. :D

Best I can give what you said without cussing is more than mildy infuriating...

This is me and this 77 chevy sport when I was 3 years old...
I won't it back. whatever the condition, unless it's a super high dollar resto...lol

Here's same truck in 1983 in front of my granddad's house. And I'm the lil 3 year old by it... This is the same garage my 78 c20 has known always since new. my 78 c20 was behind the middle door, same garage, period.

same garage as the 3 car in the pic when I was 3. I inherited my granddad's house. So my 78 c20 is actually still living in the same space it has always lived since new. that's real dang special...

This same spot I dug the truck out of in 2007 is where it lives now... just there isn't stuff stacked all over it any more...lol

This is a pic from 2012 with my dogs in the back, but the truck is in the same spot is was in the old buried with junk pic above. :)

If some of you think this is cool, here's my C20 I have now in 1984.

real close in age to the pics of my old 77... so when my dads truck had a rollbar n stripes, my 78 had a camper shell and towed a huge airstream all over the continent. yeas I mean continent instead of country.
-
I think my mother has a bigger bee up her bonnet than me to find this truck... and she's totally a "if it gets me from A to B" type of person... but she loves that old white truck as I do for some reason.
Also, knowing she's an a-to-b type of person, the 2 times I seriously though of selling my 78 c20, she tols me she'd beat me if I did... 8) so I haven't and won't. I think like me she wants us to have both back. my 78 and the so far lost old 77.
-
Nice looking 78. My old truck in back is the same color. I also envy you for living outside the rust belt. No such thing as a daily rust free driver up here. If there is, I'll show you a garage dweller. Which is just as bad as a trailer queeny.

Mine was a garage dweller, only out in the summer months mostly other than for firewood. only rust on my truck was a 1" square place under the windshield seal where the glue from the factory had blocked one of the drain holes.
Yet anyway I got hit in a wreck and ended up replacing a rust free door, rocker, and hood. That made me extremely ILL. I finally get a rust free truck and still have to replace the stuff as if it was a rusty truck...
-
I'm lucky (unlucky?) in the fact I don't really care what a vehicle looks like as long it runs like a top. Not that I like rust or dents or anything but I don't go out of my way top worry about them. Rattle cans are my friend LOL! I'd prefer the paint all be close to the same color however... 8)

I've always thought that paint scheme with the strips was cool, it seems noone wanted to keep it though. haven't seen one in ages.
-
They were available in 77 in 4 colors, white, black, baby blue, silver.
Mine was white, which I liked cuz no matter the color the wheels were white.. so on my white truck they matched n looked cool.
-
I always preferred the white steel wagon type rims myself. I don't understand the reason for fancy rims on a truck. Aluminum yes...fancy... no.
But in the same vein, I never understood the reason for 2-wheel drive trucks either. Unless there were 2 tire on each side. A 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton is just ...well...pointless.

I only liked the white wagon wheels, cuz my truck was white (would have hated them on any other color)
Fancy rims on a truck are the same as having fancy mirrors or paint... depends on what you like
2 wheel drive trucks have their place, its cheaper for people who don't plan to go off road... ya know like road warriors, pavement pounders, no need for 4wd on paved roads, cept for ice, even then you aint invincible...
I never had a 4wd truck. no aversion to them, just haven't needed it so far. so I like my 2wd, they weigh less get way better mileage and cost less.
Depends where you live. no need whatsoever for a 4wd in downtown NY. tho lots of need for 4wd if you live on the beach in the movie jaws...lol

Sorry, wasn't trying to stir things up, sometimes I think out loud to often. I agree, it depends on the circumstances. I think a go-fast two wheel drive works well as a sleeper (stop-light racer). A buddy in high school had a 68 El Camino SS 396 w/4 gears and posi and 4.10's. He also 14" of rubber under the one corner and still couldn't tame the beast. We used to sit in the box against the tailgate when we cruised looking for races. Then we acted as a traction device. It was different times with different laws for sure. Some of the younger folk don't understand the meaning of freedom because so many laws have been passed to protect everyone from themselves. It's dang near a crime now to attempt having a good time in which which one MIGHT hurt oneself while doing so. The word 'Safety', like the word 'hero' has been so overused and abused in the last decade and a half that they have no real meaning anymore. I am not trying to stir the pot further, JMHO YMMV

I agree 100% man. Glad I at least got to grow up and get to have the fun times for four or five years after I got my license.
-
The seventies and eighties were different that's certain. More fun, less stress, fewer laws. Madd Mothers were just getting their horns installed in their foreheads but they hadn't grown the dragon tails yet. The news media was around simply to relate the news, not how you were supposed feel about the news. Boys could be boys and not be expected to be in touch with their feminine sides. Trees were for climbing and firewood, not hugging. Gas cost a quarter, $0.27 for ethyl. $4.00 collected between three or four friends could put enough gas in a 383 Dodge Charger to cruise all night and do some stoplight racing to boot. All the cruisers, custom vans, and street racers could meet in the local grocery stores parking lot and admire each others cars, trucks or motorcycles without too much trouble from the law, make bets on races and prepare for the upcoming races out in the country on the four lane. The folks with CB's were picked as spotters. Fun times.
Those times seem to generally last only three to five years before responsibilities take over ones life after high school. I believe they are essential to a normal life however. I guess times like those are fewer and farther between nowadays. Most kids don't seem to be interested in that sort of thing.
-
Most kids don't seem to be interested in that sort of thing.
Those Kids are missing out badly. Lots of cars I love wer awesome 30 to 50 years before I was born (1980) but I know they're still awesome. heck my truck is two years older than I am
Kids discounting things yeah theyre missing out, they just don't know how stupid they are for what theyre missing
