Depends on what broke, was it the selector (the red pointer ) or the cable that moves selector ?
http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=12525.0 This will give you an idea of how far you will have to go if it is the shifter on the column, hopefully it is the selector or the cable that attaches at the selector and not in your steering wheel.

It sounds like you're asking about the shift indicator. If you do a search using those words you'll find all kinds of posts about it. New ones can be found on ebay. Make sure you look for a 3 speed indicator.

The red gear indicator is just connected to a piece of nylon cord (like fishing line) and it moves back and forth as you move the shift lever. The cord may have broken, or it may be the indicator itself. New ones are available - maybe even from our sponsor's site.
Only a few parts of the dash have to come off to replace the shift indicator. From what I recall, you can pull the plastic pieces covering the top and bottom of the column and you should be able to get to the indicator.

More than likely just a broken string. That is how our truck was when we first got it. It is an easy fix. I am much less mechanically inclined than many on here and I had no trouble replacing it. Warning though, the system is pretty crude and depending on the age and condition of your truck it may work its way out of adjustment with use.

Mine broke on the '77. It was just the nylon string between the pointer and the column. The pointer is on a return spring so when the string breaks it returns past the park position and you can't see it with the dash bezel on.

The plastic can also break. Happened to me and trying to find a way to get a new indicator inside the metal slot.
