Title: Help - Broken Vent Window Hinge Weld (w/pic)
Post by: mcintyrederek on January 06, 2014, 06:54:04 pm
I have a broken weld where the bottom of the vent window connects to the shaft (and the bottom spring) on '86 Silverado.  Wondering what do to and how to repair it.  I don't want to attempt welding something this small of an area.  I have oxy/acet torch kit and flux coated bronze, but sure don't want to heat it with the glass in it.

(1)  How do you get the glass out of the frame, and (2) is it even worth trying to braze?  It looks like if I get the angle even a little wrong it probably won't open and close, or seal, correctly.

(3) Is this whole assembly something that might be popular in a junk yard?

Any suggestions on how to fix, are appreciated.
Derek.

When I took out my vent windows a few yrs ago I had already removed the main windows. There are 3 screws in the top of the frame and 1 in the bottom. Here's an older thread with a description of removing the vent-

You have to remove the glass as it is wedged in there with the weatherstripping.
It may be easier to get one from the salvage yard instead or while you fix this one

Hi.  Thanks for the replies.  I just gutted the whole passenger door and put new felts and sweeps in.  I repaired the old rusted spring and assembly in the wing vent bottom, lubed it and got it back in with the old seals which were in "good enough" shape.  I am going to disassemble the driver's side today or tomorrow and see about repairing that hinge stud that welds to the glass frame.  My guess is the spring down in the door that holds tension on the wing vent so it doesn't flop around was so rusty and seized, when someone tried to open it, they forced it and the weld broke.

It looks like the stud needs to be welded back in at just a certain angle or it won't open and shut correctly.
