Okay so I just purchased a 78 K10 with the small block 400 in it. I'm unsure which transmission is in it. I do know that both the engine and transmission are original to the vehicle. So my question is ,which of the transmissions had overdrive and which did not. And if mine does not, is there any way to get it? I drive back and fourth about 50 miles round trip to work everyday and this vehicle will be my daily driver for a short while. So any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

1st off, is your truck a automatic or standard transmission ? Automatic, you could go with a 700r4. Standard you could go with something like nv4500 or tremack 5 speed. ( both are pricey, but well worth the money).
I got a A833 overdrive 4x4 4 speed transmission out of a 84 that I am putting into my 74. I only did this because I thought it would be cool to have the A833. Otherwise i would have most likely done the tremac 5 speed.

Overdrive wasn't offered until 1982 for our trucks, so if it is original to the truck it is not overdrive.
As for your questions, I would repeat what Bake74 said.

Thanks for the replies. It is an automatic and it does not have overdrive. I'm just trying to overlook my options for being able to have overdrive as I do a lot of highway driving.

Depending on what year of 700r4 you get (non lock up vrs lock up), it should be a east swap. You will have to relocate your cross member.
