Title: Tilt steering in need of drastic repair....
Post by: frotosride on February 19, 2014, 10:48:29 pm
How big of a pain is it to rebuild the tilt steering column and is there one place I can find all the parts I need. I have been avoiding this for a long while but the amount of slop in the column has started to cause a short when trying to start the truck.

If it is just sloppy at the tilt, check the tech section it explains how to fix that.

I did mine using the tech article Capt. did and it worked great. Couple tips make, sure make before the project that you read through and look at the pictures several times. Also make sure you have a access to those pictures as your performing the task for reference. The tool to remove the pins is critical I didn't have one but made my own with long stainless bolt and washers and nuts. And your probably gonna chew up 1-2 hours doing it the first time.

Yea I have disassembled it a few times in the past with the exception of pulling the bearings. I was just trying to tighten the torx head bolts and I did but couldn't get to them that well so they are loose again. I thumbed through the tech article and I don't think there is any detail lacking I was amazed at the amount of pics because most of the time we get into the job and forget about pics.

Actually there were more pics, because I took a picture every time I removed a screw or a part.  Did you locktite them when you got to them?

No because the ones that are loose are what hold the I guess yoke end where the bearings are to the actual column. So with out pulling out the bearings i really couldn't get to them I just tightened them to make due so I could drive to VA when I was relocated. But I never under estimate the 2 seconds it takes to put some locktite on anything...It sucks having to do rework when you could have easily prevented it while you were there the first time. This When I tear into it this time I an going to lock everything down...I like the IDIDIT colums but the price...wow, also I think it kind of takes away from the interior to have all that chrome
