I have decided to put a ridetech air ride system on my 86 c10. I hope to have pics of all the steps I go through. All questions, comments and advice are welcome. Hope you enjoy.
-
I would be very interested in following this project. I am more of a 4wd truck owner. I thought maybe after the project I have now I would do a 2wd.
So the more pics and details of what you have to do would be great. I have wondered how well a adjustable air ride system would be in today's advancements compared to the standard static drop systems.

Getting started

I don't know what size stock springs are but mine were not that long (not a lot of spring tension)
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/adbd1e6c-9c4a-4361-bd13-7842c6785530_zps5c4069be.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/adbd1e6c-9c4a-4361-bd13-7842c6785530_zps5c4069be.jpg.html)
Finished first side. Took a little while I have never done this before but nothing hard.

Its funny to look at but this is all that comes off except tie rods were changed out also and I am reusing the stock spindles.

This is the first issue I have with the kit that the instructions tell you which size nut, bolt and washers but bags are not labeled so I am going to spend a lot of time separating lots of nuts, bolts, and washers

Stock springs are either 52" or 56" long, yours are probably 52" long. How are the instructions you have, easy to follow ?
It is always a pain laying everything out first before you start, especially on a big project.
-
The instructions are real straight forward with pics but they seem to jump around a bit. If you go to the ridetech websitewww.ridetech.com (http://www.ridetech.com) they have PDFs of the instructions that are provided with the parts.
-
Looks like a good start. Looks like you moved the original pictures.

A cordless drill works but it takes a long time and uses up the batteries fast. If you have an electric drill or need an excuse to buy one this is it.

Had to do a little grinding to get the washer to fit.

I used wire hangers and some rope to hold up the heavy lover control arm to reinstall mounting u bolts.

Nothing out of ordinary just big and heavy. I do suggest using something to hold the control arm up the u bolts don't just slide in place they have to be lined up then taped into place with a hammer.

I have never had one bend that way before, what was above the jack stand, the cab ?

If you look at the placement of the saddle under the flange of the rail you'll notice the stand is pushing on the inside edge of the flange levering it off the radius of the rail. A proportionate amount of vehicle weight is resting directly on the inner edge of the flange. Try using a flat-saddle stand that distributes the weight evenly across the flange face.

Yes it is close to the front cab bushing. It happened on both sides

There is a locating tab that will fit into the hole that the original top shock mount hole but it does not fit flush against the frame. ridetech told me that I could just tighten it down and it would be fine but I went ahead and ground down the stock mount so it would be flush.

Nice updates, and I like when people actually include things like the locating tab for the top shock mount. It is nice to know the problems you ran into and how you solved them for the rest of us in the future that might do the same thing.

I have started on the drivers front now so I have tried to get some better pics of things that I mentioned previously that had to be modified.

Swilliams, the top pic showed a cracked where you ground it down, I am assuming by the pic that the stud for the bag goes through the hole and the washer and nut sits on top of the metal, is that correct ?
-
Yes the upper bag plate has 4 bolts that hold it in place the pics are of the 2 that I had to grind to get the washer to sit flat

That is cool that you were able to create something like that. You have skills most people are like me and have to pay a lot for such a product.

If I only knew then what I know now.... In the directions for the lower control arms it says to reuse your original hardware I.E. the u bolts and nuts os I did on the first side as I said in previous post they had to be persuaded with a hammer, so I got the first side done. I move on to the next side start trying to persuade this u bolts in finally get the first one start working on the second one no luck keep trying still no luck so I move my drop light so I can see better and I find that some how this u bolt is spread apart an extra 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch so I had to buy a new one ended up finding out I could have bought 4 new ones with the bolts for $20 and the new one just slid in place.(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/B384FB73-AAED-4138-A57C-647B3B3791F3_zpsjqx76iih.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/B384FB73-AAED-4138-A57C-647B3B3791F3_zpsjqx76iih.jpg.html) (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/4CCA1AC2-3766-40B6-90B9-621FB83B67A5_zps7kb8btyc.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/4CCA1AC2-3766-40B6-90B9-621FB83B67A5_zps7kb8btyc.jpg.html)
When routing the air line on the first side I had no problem but on the second side because of the exhaust. When I drilled the hole for the air line I could only fit the drill in so far and the hole ended up a little low there fore I had clearance issues on the inside where the new upper bag plate and air fitting fit go which is the old spot for the top of the spring I had to trim the lip.

Next is the front muscle bar (sway bar) you use one of the original mounting holes and then mark and drill the other side you. You will have to bend the bracket to be able to bolt the second side to the frame but there is no problems with the install.

Looking good so far. Are those blue hoses in your pics the actual air hose or are the air hoses inside them ?
-
You have done a nice job on that install. Thanks for posting the pics and sharing the process with us. Give us an update when you roadtest it.

The 3/8 air lines are inside the blue wire loom.

I still have what I am most worried about the rear install. It has the notch that has to be cut in the frame. The directions make it seem easy enough. Lastly the management system.

I also like the pics and instructions, if I do a second truck it will be 2wd. It will be my first 2wd Chevy and I will want it lowered and fast. So the more you can post the better, thank you.

A rookie mistake almost cost me a lot. I was just thinking about the rear end install I was not thinking about everything. When I started removing the front shackle bolt for the leaf springs when I removed the second one my entire truck tipped forward. We have all felt that sinking feeling well somehow I got lucky the front jack stands were far enough forward that nothing hit the ground and the truck did not slide on the jack stands and cause a catastrophe. The rear end did slide back and the driveshaft did slip out of the transmission leaking a good size puddle by the time I got my jack under the front end like it should have been in the first place. Sorry no pics of the truck teetering on front jack stands.

The pics are of the tear down so far. Other than remembering that the front end is heaver than the rear no big problems. Just when the truck tipper the rear end shifted back and the driveshaft came out of the transmission leaving a big mess while I was getting my jack under the front end.

Still nervous so I left the leaf springs on the rear bumper.
-
I can see why you did not get any pics when the truck was teetering, ;). The hose coming out of your rear pumkin is the vent hose, it should have a 1-way valve on the end of it, it is usually mounted up on a cross sill rail above the pumkin.
-
Also I have no way of identifying the type of rear end no tab nothing stamped on it.

Check out this link to Axle Identification Chart (http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml) posted on Colorado K5's website. It is really helpful and shows pics of the pumkin housing for the different axles.
If you can not still find out what it is, post a pic and someone here can figure it out.

I know it's the 10 bolt I am more wanting to know if it is limited slip I am changing the gear oil and don't know if I need the limited slip additive
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
If it has just the ring and pinion gear in it and that is all then no. But since you have it in the air, you can tell if you have a limited slip by turning one tire, if the opposite spins in the same direction you have a limited slip rear end.

Thank you that is a big help

When you pull the cover off to drain your ten bolt if it looks like this then it is a regular open differential.

Well not much to worry about for the c notch. The template uses one of the many existing holes in the frame to locate it. I tried using a grinder and a reciprocating saw to cut the notch and the grinder worked better for me. I may have had the wrong blade. The grinder did allow me to take a little off at a time to make the notch fit snug.

The directions say that you have to cut the exhaust like I have done for clearance and says that you can put turndowns which does not interest me I am hoping that I can have it routed high enough to clear it seems like there will be enough room. I hope.

That looks really good, it's making me want to go out and get a 2wd truck to do one to. The c-notches, I am assuming you could weld them in place instead of having all the bolts there ?
-
That's right they make a weld in kit also.
-
Well I got ahead of myself with on previous post I went ahead and bolted the c-notch all the ay in and came to find out that I had to take most of the bolts out to put in a cross member.

That is nice to know. I am interested in seeing how you run your exhaust pipes, I remember you saying you do not want to turn them down right there, I agree, I do not like it when they are turned down right after the cab.
-
Looking really clean man. I agree that grinders cut way better than recip. saws.
Whats your total drop height going to be when finished? with you be able to sit frame on the ground with a C notch that size?
-
Ridetech told me that I will get between 3 to 6 inches. This is a link to the 1986 that they did.
http://www.ridetech.com/garage/1986-chevy-truck/ (http://www.ridetech.com/garage/1986-chevy-truck/)
-
That 86 looks good, is that the stance you are going for ? This kit does not allow you to raise the truck at all right, the bags are just to make it sit at that height correct ?
-
I know its not going to have the stance I had to begin with which I liked. It will be able to raise and lower but they recommend not driving with the bags completely inflated. So its going to be a surprise to me as well.

I have actually almost finished the install other than the management system. The rear has not been much of a problem just some mistakes on my part. The worst has been the removal of the front leaf spring mount and I bought a chrome diff cover from Jegs first the gasket was bad then one of the screws broke off when tightening it down. Not happy with this outcome. I have drilled and taped it hope it will hold because the Ridetech kit has a bracket that bolts up to the diff and one end of the panhard bar bolts to.

A little hard to tell in your photos, however it does not look to me that the upper shock hole that you were having trouble with fitment, is original. My guess is that the area cracked & someone welded some pieces on there...might explain the fitment problem & also the Ridetech answer of: "Just tighten it down" as they are not expecting (or seeing) a non-original item that someone has done to your truck. Here is a couple photos of the original area to compare. Lorne

Routing the air lines
-
I am looking forward to when you have your wheels back on and how it looks, would like to see how low it can go and high when sitting all together. It is making me want to finally do a 2wd truck.
-
I am looking for opinions for the placement of the tanks and management system also the routing of the lines. Please let me know what you think.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/2183a25c-fe51-4b1e-a43d-33c170254909_zps09a23381.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/2183a25c-fe51-4b1e-a43d-33c170254909_zps09a23381.jpg.html)
If I go through the fenderwell with the air lines it helps with the routing on the rear bag lines but going through the bed floor is a cleaner look. Just 2 ideas.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/8997E00D-691D-4325-8CB8-03F52C1303AA_zpsbel8hr2z.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/8997E00D-691D-4325-8CB8-03F52C1303AA_zpsbel8hr2z.jpg.html)
The valves are in the middle.

The second tank mounted on the bed wall gives me a little more bed space.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/4B6BBBC6-8DE9-4D2B-80EC-8FE4C7B24D22_zpswm3cpaud.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/4B6BBBC6-8DE9-4D2B-80EC-8FE4C7B24D22_zpswm3cpaud.jpg.html)
-
Are you planning on mounting this by the tailgate or up by the cab ? The pics look like it is by the tailgate which would be in the way of loading anything into the bed.
-
It up next to the cab. I looked at putting the second tank under the bed but it would be in the way of trying to reinstall my exhaust.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/bf0390b2-6b26-4259-8958-2bc8e01cafe3_zps1a5ad854.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/bf0390b2-6b26-4259-8958-2bc8e01cafe3_zps1a5ad854.jpg.html)
-
In that case how about stacking them vertically, on top of each other against the cab, will that work ?
-
Most people make a mount system to replace the spare tire area...
-
Dual tank, why?
-
I considered putting the second tank in that place but I want to try and run my exhaust out the back again instead of turn downs like the directions suggest. Do you think this is possible.
I am new to air ride systems so I went with 2 compressors so I don't over work 1 and 2 tanks so I have enough air to go from completely empty bags to completely full bags without having to wait on compressors.
-
swilliams. when it is all said and done, I wonder if you could compile a list with part #'s of everything it took to completely finish this project. I am seriously thinking about doing my first 2wd truck next this way.
-
i will do that. I wish I had tracked all the incidentals like drill bits hardware etc because I thought I had a good supply of things but found that some things needed to be updated and or replaced.
-
In looking at the last couple pictures you posted, I had a thought in my head. Are the tanks narrow enough to be slid in the framerails hanging off of a bracket across the top of the frame from your shocks back to the crossmember? If so, that could solve several concerns in one...room for full exhaust, keep them up out of the way & not take up space in the bed. Maybe? Can't tell from the photo if they are too wide or not? Just a thought, Lorne
-
The air pod will have to go in the bed because of all the components.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/swilliams19733/ridetech/d4059573-c172-49e1-9de4-82e45906ff36_zpsd9d61ffc.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/swilliams19733/media/ridetech/d4059573-c172-49e1-9de4-82e45906ff36_zpsd9d61ffc.jpg.html)
This is the only place I can fit it in the frame rails and makes it impossible to run my exhaust.
Does anyone know if it is possible to run the exhaust out the back with this set up?

Yes, just like that. On the other tank with all of the valves, solenoids, pump, ect. Are you concerned with that being damaged by road slop or just the size of it makes you "have to go in the bed" with it?
I would get rid of the spare tire crossmember & move the rear crossmember to the back of the frame if that gave you the distance you need to mount them both there. Keep the clutter out of the bed is my thinking...I believe you will have room for a full exhaust doing it that way also. Just my Thoughts, Lorne
-
I would prefer to have the air pod in the bed but as for the cross member being moved back and the spare tire one removed I will definitely look in to that. Thanks for the tips.
-
So I did some mock up today and I think that there is a way to run the exhaust out the back. I do have questions if anyone can answer for me. As far as the shocks brake lines and air tank can they be as close as 2 to 3 inches to the exhaust???

You can run the exhaust within a few inches of those pieces shouldn't be a problem.
With that 4 link setup, you are going to have to be creative to get them out the back though.
YOU DO NOT want to get the exhaust anywhere near those bags or the air lines.
-
Thanks for the answer. I will definitely stay away from the bags and air lines
-
I have wired my management system so I can test it and have strapped the system to the frame because I have to have the exhaust reinstalled.

Almost done

I like the way it is sitting. I can not remember, and am just being lazy right now. Did you ever mention what size tires and rims you are running, and what the backspacing is ?
-
they are 275/60/15 not sure of backspacing
-
I know you were asking questions (or having trouble with ride tech on an electrical issue) on a different thread, but was wondering if you ever got this project done and operational ?
-
Good timing Bake 74 I was actually working on this post. I finally got my exhaust installed today very happy with how it turned out.

I had to move the air tank that was between the frame rails for exhaust. I do not mind relocating it.
Got new ecu installed. Now compressor will kick on for 3 sec at a time while truck is running... not fixed but getting better.?

I will still have more electrical questions on other post (I wish I knew more about electrical it would make things so much easier).

Finally got everything back together still have some issues to work out but for the most part it works.

Looks nice, waiting to hear how it works after you drive it for awhile.

I would like to update on the install. About 1 year later went through everything to check on it and am happy to report that i have no real issues with anything.

Truck looks awesome man nice job

Thanks
