Title: Cloud of smoke from under steering wheel then no turn signals???
Post by: cjk3500 on March 02, 2014, 12:09:37 pm
I was just driving home, made a right into my driveway and got a cloud of smoke front under the steering wheel / brake pedal area.  Now I have no turn signals but the brake lights work.  Any ideas?  It's an 82 GMC C2500 Diesel.

A wire was chaffed or pinched under the dash by the pedal arm, push-rod or linkage.  You probably lost back-up lights too when the fuse blew.  Do the 4-ways work?

You were close ;)  I found out that the PO had added a switch to power some add on reverse lights that were removed but the wire was still under the dash and just cut.  Looks like it touched the dash and then the dark blue wire from the P/N switch to the fuse box fried all the insulation off  :-[  They also put a circuit breaker on that circuit so it probably helped give it a little more juice than the standard 15w fuse...  Not to mention the P/N switch wasn't even attached to the column.  Time to swap out my suburban tilt column I guess :)

Don't you just love it when someone just cuts wires and leaves the ends hanging and exposed.  OH the little things we find to make great memories.   :o

This truck has been a lot of fun.  The PO did some stupid stuff that has had me on the side of the road a few times.  Luckily I've been able to fix them and continue on :)  It seems every time I drive I foudn
