Bought a nice looking truck in South Dakota. Want to fly in and drive back to Illinois. I believe as long as I have it insured and have the title and bill of sale dated the day I travel back home I should be OK. Travel time is around 8 hours. Would be travelling through Minnesota, Wisconsin & Illinois.
The reason I ask is that I believe the truck won't have any tags on it when I pick it up.

Check with the local authorities to be sure, but you should be ok as you can't get the title in your name till you get "home".

most states have a "one way pass" check at the state police office. I got one when I bought a jeep it gave me 24hrs and up to 100miles.

Not sure about the other states, but Ca. would require you to get a temporary moving pass to drive on the roads, even if you were from out of state and picking it up and driving it back home to another state. The CHP would tell you, if you got pulled over that you should have checked with the local DMV before driving the vehicle. (personal experience)
They are free I believe in CA. I would check with each state through their web site and make sure.

Don't even try NY were so goofed up we'd probably try and make you pay sales tax on it here get it registered and inspected and then maybe just maybe we would let leave the state. And we would try and take your guns too! (Can you tell I'm tired of the nonsense here!!)
