Title: steering column
Post by: bigal04 on March 25, 2014, 09:24:17 pm
ok guys i have a problem. I recently purchased a 1980 c10 with three on the tree. The shifter messed up and I have a family member that claimed to know how to rebuild them but made it worse and now the steering column is unusable and beyond repair. I cannot find another with three on the tree. So my question is if i put the shifter in the floor what kind of
vehicle can i find a column out of that will work with it. If i find a column out of any manual chevy will it work and if so what year

Realistically you can unhook the rods from the trans and just move the shifter to the floor.
You aren't going to find a donor from something else that will work on the pickp.

Like Capt said move your shifter to a floor type then you can use any pre 1984 manual column without major wiring changes.

However, if using a pre 1977 column you may need an adapter for the turn signal connector.

car-part.com lists a dozen or so steering columns with three-on-the-tree for your truck.  Reman going price is $395.  Salvage is $200 and down.

I've had good experiences buying from salvage dealers on car-part.com.

If he didn't actually destroy any of the parts here's a video series for rebuilding it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W4Ly0m01LE
