Title: DVDSWAN 1978 K10 Stepside build
Post by: dvdswan on March 26, 2014, 09:23:54 pm
ok, I know I've posted pics and updates all over this site and realized I should have a build thread.  To start off I've been taking care of the general maintenance of the truck and will be for a little while.  I won't start any real building until my other project is done, which should be this early summer (knock on wood).

The plan for the truck is to do a ground up restoration with added creature comforts.  I'm going to keep the medium blue and interior blue.  Adding AC and power accessories.  I'm keeping the 4" lift, going back to the factory dual exhaust. The engine I'm up in the air about, I may do a LSx swap or just rebuilt the 350 that's in it but with fuel injection.  I'd like to do a NV4500 swap with a hydraulic clutch and keep the NP205.  Axles I'd like to keep and install a LSD and 3.73s or 4.11s with discs on all 4s.  I guess we will see how that goes.  Wheels, I'd like to find some truck rally wheels.  The truck will be used for some DD, light wheeling and camping, and some towing.

Since buying the truck I've given it a tune-up, replace the fuel pump (thought it was bad), selector valve (bad), battery tray (corroded), wiper motor (no high speed), washer bottle (cracked), headlamps (old and dim), both PS hoses (old, cracked and leaking), and the brake master cylinder (leaking).  Serviced both axles, changed the oil, and flushed the PS system.  I've bought intermittent wiper switch/module, bumper guard, and CB radio.

Great start on your project, now you just need to add the year of the truck so when someone who does not know your truck is reading this for the first time will know what year it is.

so this past week I attempted to change a leaking oil pan gasket / RMS.  I have to admit pulling it all apart super simple and cleaned up all the parts but getting out the upper piece of the rear main seal took me forever to get it out.  I fiddled around about 2 hours on Wed and got fed up with it.  Nothing seemed to work like it should.  Yesterday it rained and today I decided to attack it again.  Climbed under the truck and within literally 2 minutes had the upper seal pushed enough to pull it around from the other side.  I guess sometimes its better to walk away and attack things in a different frame of mind at a later time.  Going back together was super simple as well.  I even replaced the oil pump as an added bonus.

I then went to the local U-Pull-It and found 2 air cleaners with wide mouths compared to my skinny one.  the plan is to take the 2 and create 1 with two wide mouths and tubing for cold air from the grille area.

thank you everyone.  I'm very pleased with the look.  I was thinking of keeping the stock wheels but spied these on CL and just couldn't pass them up.

yes it had a 4" lift on it when I bought it.   one of the few things that wasn't stock on this.

so just been collecting parts really.  but made some good scores at the yards these last 2 times...

bucket sliders from a 78 CC, really bought them for the passenger side since its just bolted to the floor and doesn't slide.

one piece rollbar for that I will clean up and have chromed... if its not outrageously priced.

This may show my age a little not that I'm old but every time I see your truck I think of that movie Tremors from the 80's I think. Since I first saw that movie I always wanted a step side. Lookin too so far.

pfft, I get asked if I'm going to paint it like "John's truck" on "CHiPs".  I tell them I'm not a fan of the 3 stripes.  I still remember seeing it the first time on the show and thought how I wanted one.  now that's dating oneself.  lol

so this past weekend I was some forums and asking about the stepside bed fenders on why the replacement fenders have filler necks so low and are non-existent for the driver side for dual tanks.  I wanted some fenders with the gas doors (I think they look a lot cleaner) and wondered why those type of fenders didn't have the rear marker lights.  anyway, long story short, a guy said he had a set of fenders he wanted to get rid of from a project that never finished.  voila!

That's sweet..I like the loom of the doors as opposed to just two necks creeping out.
