Title: Door Switch Wiring
Post by: TKCR on March 30, 2014, 12:54:03 pm
Got a 86 Chevy Silveraldo 2dr 2wd. Dome & Cargo Lights are not working. I got new door switches and when I went to install them, that's when I noticed a lot of my wiring have been cut by someone else. It looks as though that when they did a rebuild, they cut all the power to the door and went with manual. That's fine with me but I no longer have wire or connectors to hook up my door switches. Can this be repaired?
And also, would it be better to remove the door harness wire completely since its cut off under the left & right side kick panels? I can post photos if this would help with understanding what I have and don't have.

Yes it can be repaired, you might be splicing the cut wires to complete the circuit.  I do not think they sell just the harness for the doors, I believe it is part of the cab harness, but I could be wrong, someone will chime in.
Check in our tech section, it has the manuals for our trucks which most of them include wiring harness.
Pics would help to tell how they were cut and where.

Can't seem to add a photo, it keeps saying its too large. Needless to say I'm getting frustrated. I haven't been able to locate the right side yet. Found the actual door harness, its been cut behind the carpet, I just can't locate the door switch wire.

See how to upload pics (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6428.msg33936#msg33936) from the tech section on this website, or you can use photo bucket and a re-sizer program to make sure they are with in the parameters of the thread in the tech section on how to upload pics.

You mentioned "Power to the doors" I'm not as up to date as I could be, but on the older trucks (And cars) the "Power" went direct to the lights and they were "Grounded" to the body with the door switches. And, when the head light switch was turned to the interior, or dome light ,position it also "Grounded" the circuit.

Well I got the cargo light working. I replaced the whole light unit. The old light"s seal was pretty much gone, so it was letting moisture in. Cleaned up the socket for the bulb and now it works.

The dome light still only works from the headlight knob being turned to the interior light. Once I get the wiring repaired to the new door switches, then hopefully the courtesy light function will work when the door opens.

The door switches complete the light circuit with a ground to the cab.
They aren't very water tight so the switch contacts corrode and they loosen up in the body hole killing the ground connection.
