Title: Is This My Oil Pressure Sending Unit
Post by: misweetrevenge on April 10, 2014, 07:51:26 am
Oil pressure gauge on the dash isn't working so I was looking around under the hood for a sending unit. I found what looks like a sensor (circled in red) that had no wire connected to it. Anybody know if this is the sending unit? If not then what is it?

Info:
73 K5 with a crate GM 350

That's a temp sender. Your oil pressure sender will be on the back of your block under your distributor.

I looked and didn't see anything (without removing the dist.)

what temp sender would that be? my temp gauge seems to work just fine.

If you have a mechanical style gauge then there will be no sending unit. You will have a small oil line that goes from the gauge to the block. Did you see anything like that? Sometimes they are next to the oil filter also.

73 - 75 had the oil style line like thirsty said, in 76 is when they changed to a wire style oil pressure sending unit.

That could be a temp sending unit that is just plugging the hole in the head, the trucks I have has the temp sending unit in the drivers side head with a green wire going to it.

Has this engine ever been rebuilt, or have the heads ever been replaced? I only ask because that could have been left behind from a head swap and that head may have been on the drivers side of this, or another engine, at one point.

It's a crate motor from GM as far as I know.

Thanks for the correction, I will be sure to put this info away for future reference.

Bump, On my 350, the oil pressure gauge line is on the top of the back of the block toward the drivers side of the motor. Look for the metal wire/tube coming out of the firewall. Follow it along and you'll find it coils around the back drivers side of the block and goes up and connects RIGHT behind the intake manifold.  Or look between the distributor and drivers valve cover and you'll find it.
