Title: Hello from Colorado, 78 k10 454 build
Post by: FearNoMan78k10 on April 16, 2014, 02:00:21 pm
I am new to the site just got logged on today. I have a 78 k10 4x4. I purchased it about 2 months ago. I just got new tires for it, 33x12.50r16 Hancook Dynapro mud terrains. It has a 12 bolt rear and 10 bolt front right now. So a 6 lug and it had a 305 small block in it. It has the 205 transfer case and manual locking hubs right now. As well as the 4 speed manual transmission. I am installing a 454 out of a 1972 chevelle ss in this truck, it is a high performance original block. It is bored over .030 thousandths and is getting a makeover throughout, I have a dana 60 kingpin straight axle with disc brakes for the front and a dana 70 for the rear axle. So that is all getting installed and worked on to be brief. 4 inch lift will be added during this project as well as many other items.  If you would like more details or want to follow just let me know !

Welcome to the site from Alaska.

Ought to be a cool project!  Curious why you are going w/ a Dana 70 rear as opposed to a GM 14-bolt FF.  14-bolts usually are a direct bolt in and are pretty bulletproof.  Arouind here they are pretty cheap; anywhere from $150-$450.  If you got a good deal on the D70 go for it.  Perhaps bigger brakes?

Hey thanks I appreciate it ! Alaska ,,,, that's the one place I seriously want to move to.... Well I bought a package deal with the dana 60 kingpin front axle and this dana 70 the guy wouldn't seperate and the dana 70 is strong as an ox and ought to work well as long as I take care of it , heavy duty axle that's for sure , I know alot of guys say 14 bolt or dana 70, but I love both and have always been a dana guy though. Here in Colorado axles are EXPENSIVE. I paid a 1000 for both axles , that's an insane deal here in Colorado , salvage yard wanted 2500 plus tax and shop fees etc ! Big massive drums and a solid axle almost as strong as the dana 80  , so hopefully I won't have any issues , we are in the midst of figuring all the suspension out right now , waiting on parts , piecing the motor together and then sending it out to get balanced , the crank and rods, and he will be doing some head work while he is at it, hopefully I will have the truck back soon , but I'm thinking a solid month still on it ... But it's only been down 3 or 4 weeks so far... Most projects take a long long time so I am fortunate it isn't going to take 4 or 5 years ... It has been a fun build.... It is my daily driver and only ride.

454 , bored over .030" , forged rods and pistons , dome top pistons , Howard's springs, full solid roller camshaft , roller rockers , roller lifters , chromoly push rods, ported intake on the heads , polished on the exhaust side , valve bracket supports,  stage 3 intake manifold  ( 1500 to 6500 rpm ) , full custom built Holley 830cfm double pumper carb , Hooker super competition headers , 2.5" dual exhaust with flowmasters, balancing rotating assembly, blue printing the motor, every nut and bolt, carter fuel pump, new heavy duty clutch and flywheel , new harmonic balancer, new radiator, new oil pickup pump, new seals and gaskets top to bottom, this is a 454 big block out of a 72 chevelle ss, original high performance motor . And it is getting a makeover :-) my treat to myself after everything I've been through
