I've started my "build" and will try to update and ask questions often. Below is my site intro copied and pasted from the new members section. I'll try and get some specs and get everyone up to speed as to where I currently am on my broke man build. I have very few pictures now because my camera decided to die. I'm not really sure how to post pictures here? Can I just attach them or do the have to be hosted on a site like smug mug or something? Anyway, have to get back to work. Like I said...will try to post some specs on the truck soon. Hope everyone has a nice Easter.
Thanks,
Eric
Hey all....my name is Eric.
I have always wanted a late 70's early 80's 4x4 and finally have the opportunity to pick one up (well buying two from a friend at work). I should also state that I am NOT a wrench or a body guy so this is all new to me. With that being said I couldn't think of a better way to get my feet wet than just to jump feet first into a 79 K10 and doing a complete body swap. I will have help as the guy I bought it from and his dad have offered to help. Anyway, looking forward to all the information and knowledge from this site and its members. I'll do my best to put together a build report but not a lot of free time can be found right now.
Thanks,
Eric/minus1

So far the old body has been removed along with the snow plow. I've wire brushed and degreased the entire frame. Now I'm just waiting on the weather to cooperate so I can apply the chassis saver. I still need to remove all the brake lines and replace them after coating the frame. Thankfully right before the PO parked the truck he replace all the front end components. Also he put after market rims and new tires. Although, I'm leaning towards finding a set of stock rally wheels?
While I've been waiting on the weather to break I was able to source an engine. Found a 350 4bolt out of a 78 Blazer for $250. Took the oil pan, valve covers and intake off looked over everything the best we could. Everything seems to be ok but time will tell. Cleaned everything the best i could and repainted the block, heads, valve covers, intake (decided not to reuse the stock intake) and timing chain cover. Bought a gasket kit and started replacing all the seals and gaskets. Also bought an Edelbrock performer intake off the PO. I need to spray one more coat on the intake then I can install. Bought new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, starter, alternator, flex plate and battery. Man this is adding up quick. :o
Hopefully tomorrow evening I can post a short spec list. Like I said....I'm totally new to this and all the numbers confuse me.. :-[ I'll have the PO give me a run down of everything and post. I do have to say that in the short time I/we've been working on her I have learned a great deal. 8)
Take care,
Eric

a few pics....hope it works

a few more

Looks like you are off to a great start. So is this going to end up being a 79 K10 when you are done ?
-
Well kinda...lol
Started out as a 79 k10 but the replacement body is from a 2wd 85 or 87 ( I will have to double check).

A couple nuggets of information. I hope I have these right? If anything looks wrong please correct me.
Engine: 350
Trans: 350
Transfer Case: Not sure of the number but I know it's full time 4x4
Axles: From a 79 "Heavy Half" (?)
3:73's front and back
Posi front and back
Tires: 33's Uniroyal
4 inch suspension lift.
That's all I have right now. If anyone has any specific question's just ask and i'll do my best to find the answer.

If you are sure your transfer case is full time then it is a NP203.
It should look like these.

that looks right. I'm heading over there tomorrow after work so i'll check it out and take some pics.
Thanks for the info
-
great start! I do have to say that I cringed at the picture of the bed :o only because it looks like the left side looks crushed being set down like that.
-
Yeah.....that bed is smoked. There is a hole in the floor big enough to through a basketball thru. I'll try and get some pics of the "new" body. It's not perfect but my plans are to do body work and paint next year.
-
@ Bake74 I tried to take a few pics but as you can see they didn't turn out very well.
-
Didn't really get much accomplished this weekend with the Holiday and all. Basically got the engine back together less the carb and accessories. Cleaned and organized the shop a bit so we could move the frame back inside. Still waiting on the weather to cooperate so I can spray the frame. Took a few pics on the block and head codes just cuz I was curious. From what I can tell they seem to be accurate to the year of the vehicle the engine was pulled from. Other than that I'm not sure what they mean as far as if they are desirable or not. Maybe one of you pro's can chime in with a little more information.
I guess I never really mentioned what the function of this truck will be. As of right now my plan is to use it for hauling firewood, plowing my drive and running to Lowes and such. Pretty much things a truck was meant to do. Future Plans?? As long as this engine holds up I'm going to do body work and paint next spring. If this engine doesn't then I'll learn how to rebuild it or purchase a crate engine next spring.
-
Your pics are ok. That is a NP203, you can tell by the side cover for a PTO take off.

Thank you for taking the time to check them out. I found that site a little be earlier so that confirms what I was thinking.
-
Another quick question....
Since this is full time 4x4 are there any pros or cons to adding manual lock outs and running in the free position or is that even possible?
-
IIRC, you will need to run the t/case in Loc position for it to move then. they have a kit that has the lockouts and part/s that go into the t/case so you can drive without the front drive assembly turning. manual hubs alone will not do this.
nice work so far BTW.
-
Don't worry about being new to this stuff. I joined the site after I bought my truck a couple years ago, and am a novice wrencher at best! The guys on here are very supportive and knowledgeable. I've posted some pretty elementary questions and have never gotten even the slightest demeaning or annoyed sounding response.
-
Ahh......ok. Thanks for the info. I will check into that. I think the OP's dad has a different trans and transfer case but I'm not sure if he will let it go? Any idea how much my current setup is worth? I may sell it in order to buy the other setup.

Most of these were converted to non-full time awhile ago. If yours is still full time I would suggest getting the kit and putting it in, it will save you a lot of money in gas alone.
So in anticipation of your next question, check out this thread over on CK5 (http://coloradok5.com/milemarkerpt.shtml) website on the part time kit for the NP203. 8)
-
Thanks for the link bake. Great information. I was also surprised on how inexpensive the kit's are. It looks to me that the 501 and 502 kits are the same with exception to the 502 coming with lockouts. Shouldn't be too bad of a job being the trans and t-case are out of the truck. I just hope that I can figure it out...LOL :-\
-
Hey minus I think you have a awesome build going on here I will definitely be following your build, great job so far you are really coming along with this project , awesome job man keep up the good work!
-
Just ordered the conversion kit. Looks like its shipping out of Ohio so with a little luck I may have it for this weekend. Won't be able to paint the frame anyway so at least I'll have something to do.
-
Well....didn't really accomplish much on the truck this weekend. Had to work longer than expected. I was able to remove all of the old brake lines and clean the headers up. Now I just need to paint them. On a positive note the conversion kit came in so hopefully I can work on that next weekend.
Question:
I was going over things while removing the brake lines and notice two of the mounts (frame side) need a little attention. Drivers side core support and rear cab mount. Does anyone out there make an aftermarket replacement or should I hit up the local junk yards or is it possible to weld a plate over the area in question?
-
I am assuming you mean the metal tab (that is welded to truck frame) that the mount sits in correct ? If that is correct I have not run across aftermarket ones yet, I think your best bet is from a donor truck.
-
Yes bake, I wasn't sure what the correct term was. I would consider them a bracket or nest where the body mount/bushings sits.
-
Here is a couple terrible pics of the "new" body. Hopefully next year I'll be able to repaint.
-
Was finally able to get the chassis saver put on. Geez what mess that stuff is..lol I'll try and post up some pics and an update this weekend.
Hope everyone has a nice holiday weekend and thanks to all of you that have served this great nation.
-

you can just put a large washer on top if the rust is just on top and doesn't go downthe side

I made some plates at work and milled the thru holes. I made one for each mount even if they didn't need one. I figured as soon as I didn't they would give out on me so might as well do them all. They aren't pretty but I get some pics up soon.
-
Also using hockey pucks is a easy almost free one inch lift
-
Here are a couple pics of the frame after the chassis saver. I believe i'm going to go ahead and rattle can it black tomorrow after work. I'm pretty happy with it other than there are a few places I just couldn't get to. Plus, I brushed it on instead of using a spray gun (was my only option). I hoping in the future I'll have another opportunity to build a driver/show truck. If so I will probably use the chassis saver again but next time I will remove everything from the frame and use a spray gun.
I'll take a few more pics after I paint tomorrow and get a few pics of the plates I made for the mount brackets. Hopefully next weekend we'll be installing the engine and trans. Then I can install the mile marker part time kit. After that there are a few things on the body to take care of and prep the 2wd cab so it will fit over the trans and t-case. Then we should be able to make some nice head way.
-
Right on looks GREAT!!!!! Nice work minus !
-
Here are a few more pics of the frame after I hit with the rattle can special. ;D I hit everything with black. The pics didn't turn out all that good but I'm happy with the way it turned out. I was going to repaint the shocks white but once I got going I just painted them black. Hopefully by the end of this weekend I'll have all the brake and fuel lines back on along with the engine and trans installed. We'll see how much time allows. I just started a house project too so who knows what will happen (have to keep mamma happy). A little drainage tile work on the outside and finish removing all the carpet from the basement. Our new flooring will be here in 3wks so no time to waste. Never done flooring either so it should be a fun experience. Anyway, here are the pics. I'll also post pics of the plates I made shortly.
-
New plates for the core support and cab mounts. Not real pretty but they should do the trick. They are about .112 thick and the thru hole is 1.5 in diameter (best measurement I could get from the stock mounts) plus I added .010 just in case. The bushings fit nice.
-
Been awhile since my last update. Work and home projects taking most of my free time.
This past weekend we were able to get the engine, trans and headers mounted. Picked up the brake lines and flair tool last night. Hoping to have all the brake lines ran by this weekend and start prepping the cab next weekend.
-
I like the plates you milled and drilled they look great minus, looks like a pro made it ;). Engine frame and tranny looks great by the way your coming along that's for sure! Post up some more pics of the engine and tranny job you did I'd love to check it out more! It'll be a sweet truck once it's all done!
-
Thanks bud. I'll get some more picks soon.
-
Yeah man , that sounds good definitely do that, want to check out more on the progress and more detailed engine and trans pics
-
Sorry I haven't updated in awhile but with work, home projects and getting our little one ready for kindergarten there hasn't been much time for the truck. This weekend was the first time I've been able to work on her.
One of the "rails" on the underside of the bed was rusted out pretty bad (forgot to take a pic) so I cut the only good section off and took it to our sister company (fab shop) to see what they could do. I think it turned out really nice. Not that anyone will ever see it. ;D Friday after work I worked on removing what was left of the old rail along with a few other little things. Saturday after work my focus was to the coat the underside of the bed. While I was doing that my buddies dad worked on cutting out the center of the new cab. Sunday morning we had to weld the new rail on and coat it before everyone showed up to mount the cab and bed. It took six of us get the cab and bed on the frame.
The cab and bed still need to be bolted down but at least they are on the frame. There are a few things that need done before we can officially mount the cab and bed. First the bolt pattern on the new bed and the hole pattern on the frame do not match. There are two bolts that didn't line up with any holes so my plan is to remove the bolt and drill new holes in the frame. Also, while moving the cab we found out that at some point there was some bondo work done to the cab corners. You can see in one of the pics where it gave out. I'm going to order new cab corners tomorrow along with new front inner fenders. Once the cab corners are replaced then we'll get the cab and bed locked down. Anyway, that's where we're at now. Hopefully this weekend will be as productive.

Looks great!
What's next?...it's fun to watch your progress.

-
Thanks Scott
Lots of little things to do yet. Still need to install the part time kit. Then we can finish the center channel of the cab. After the cab and bed are locked down we can start getting everything wired up. Fuel lines and tank need to be installed. Then replace the front inner fenders and install the dog house. All new fluids. And a bunch of other things I'm forgetting. Hopefully next spring she will receive a fresh coat of paint.
-
Your making progress minus, definitely a nice truck being built there.... Pretty sweet stuff what your doing to it.. Keep it up man!
-
Thanks bud! Anymore progress on your truck?
-
No problem! Yes progress is being made for sure, check out my build thread! Parts , paint supplies , details, hopefully I'll have the bed and dog house finished this week! Sanded , primered , painted and clear coated via budget style! My body has stripped me from being able to work on it very much, but I'm crossing fingers I'll be able to muster up enough strength and mind over matter to get the body finally done! It would be crazy if I could repaint the exterior of the truck the same color but I don't think I will do that unfortunately,,,, due to funds..... And other reasons, ie getting scratches and crying like a baby lol !
-
No real progress this weekend. Too many things going on I guess.
I was able to go pick up my new cab corners and front inner fenders. Took them over to where the truck is being built and spent a few minutes cleaning up the cab. The "new" body has been sitting in his shop for about 5yrs collecting dust so she is in dire need of a bath. Cleaned all the glass up and wiped down the dash. There was a bunch of junk under the seat so I got all the cleaned up. Still need to wipe everything down a final time. The PO put a dash cover on but it was pretty faded so I threw it out. There are some cracks so I'll need to order a new cover.
I took a few more pics of the cab and engine while I was there. You can really see how bad the passenger cab corner is in one of the pics. Also took a few with the center of the cab cut away. Trying to make plans for next Saturday and Sunday to work on her some more. Fingers crossed...
-
The last two pics show how dusty the truck is.
-
Man minus that engine looks GREAT mounted up in there! Nice work bud.....I can't wait to see this truck DONE. Minus.... And it running down the road! The red color of the truck is just awesome.... You should try using Meguiars carnuba wax and restoration wax to bring out a brilliant shine! It works great man! What exactly did you redo on the motor ? Ie.... Everything you did to the engine and trans ....
-
Thank you Sir!
No real work done to the engine yet. ;) Basically just opened it up and looked for wear and tear. Everything looked clean so we did a gasket kit. Put a different intake on and hooker headers. Came out of a 78 or 79 K-5. Guy said he owned for 10yrs I believe and just used to move snow and stuff around his shop. Hopefully it last a few years. I want to paint it next year and do the engine the following year. Trans is just a 350. I still need to install the part time kit.

Hey doing a gasket kit IS WORK buddy.... Seriously..... Well what did you find when you looked into the heart of the motor? How did things look? How far into the motor did you go? You know Minus...... Just my opinion..... My two cents worth...... I know you worked very hard on the motor......... And just did a gasket kit...... But if I was you..... Literally... I would do the engine rebuild first brother, service the trans , fix any and all mechanical , rebuild as best as you can, to me a truck that has a nice paint job but hasn't first...been rebuilt underneath to begin with.... is like having a cart to pull ....but no horse to pull it with..... Make sense? I don't know..... My two cents..,... Um .... Minus.... Word to the wise, if you get anything out of this,,, hear me out on this,,,, PLEASE...... CRATE MOTOR CRATE MOTOR CRATE MOTOR...... Will save you TONS of money buddy.... Trust me ...... Get one from a reputable place with a warranty.... It will save lots of headache and a frustrated spouse....and a broken piggy bank..... Lol,,, now you could build your engine much higher quality, more powerful, thoroughly built, better machined, higher performance, better internals, more done to it etc if you do it yourself.....buy parts yourself ,,, etc,,, build it yourself,,,,, BUT..... I have learned,,,, that it is easy to get overwhelmed and consumed in the engine building aspect and go over the top and spend a fortune making it a engine you've always dreamed for, and it may cost you more in the end than you ever thought it would , more than just money,,,, a frustrated woman who looks down on it inside and doesn't enjoy it.... Hmmm.... If I were to do it again,..... I would build a motor on the side.... And have a running one it in..... Good food for thought...... Maybe you will consider that? Anywho I'm just trying to help you avoid making mistakes that I did along the way with my build..... It has cost far more than enough..... Believe me...... I hope it's worth it.... I've lost my wife's interest in it because of it..... Keep that in mind,,, it will be a very cool built through and through solid big Block chevy 1 ton k10 truck,,,, but at what cost .... Did it cost me? .......More than just finances...... If you decide to build another motor, then sure go bonkers on it and build it to the hilt..... Build it to handle abuse, high power, a torque monster .... But go in mind with a set budget friend, and stick with it.... If I had not boughten a lie for an engine my truck would be running..... Buy a junker motor,,,, rebuild the day lights out of it... Every bearing, every bolt, every piece of it.... Literally..... And take your time,,, then swap motors out.... Then rebuild the one you have in your truck one with new bearings/bolts....seals, gaskets, valves , springs...etc etc.... Anyways Minus,,,, just my two cents......
-
Thanks for the input/advise. I honestly don't know what I will do first. Paint or engine? I wanted to do the engine now but the budget doesn't have room. With Ashley going back for her RN degree and having a few Dr bills I want paid off before the end of the year its just not in the cards. I just couldn't bring myself to tie up funds in the engine right now. She does and gives up so much for us/me that I needed to step back and support her dream of becoming an RN. She has been on board for all of my interest and hobbies. So I have no problem putting my stuff on the back burner for her. To be honest without her and Riley I wouldn't be on the green side of the ground. A little too deep so let's get back on track.
For the engine I would like to rebuild the one I have just because I've never done anything like that before. Obviously I couldn't do it all by myself but I still think it would be fun. I would love to have the first hand experience of the inner workings and how all the parts and pieces align to make that wonderful rumble we all love so much. I don't have plans to build a crazy engine like yours (although that would be bad@ss). Right now I'm thinking just a notch above stock. A bit more power and torque would be nice but I want it to be dependable, low maintenance and efficient as possible. Now will that happen? Who knows? I may end up going the crate route? It all depends on the BOSS and what we set as our budget.
The current engine looked clean to my untrained eye. lol The gentleman that I bought the trucks from and who is helping with this project thought it was pretty clean as well. He's been doing body and engine work on the side for 25yrs. Hopefully he is right? We didn't see any grime or sludge anywhere. No major scaring on the cylinder walls or anything that would make us worried but you never know. If the engine does crap out on me before paint. Then I have my answer on what to do first. LOL!!
The reason for wanting to do the body/paint first is the salt issues around here during the winter ( plus the humidity in summer). If there is the slightest hint of a snow storm the salt trucks are out and about. It seems like if there is a chance for more than an inch they must salt the roads. That's why I decided to do the cab corner and the inner fenders now. Plus a few other spots. I figure if I can get them fixed, primed and rattle canned now that should get me thru the winter. Then I can clean the snot out of the truck and paint it in the spring. Now I'm not talking show quality paint. I just want to freshen her up a bit and maybe ward of the rust for a few more years. I won't be doing the inside of the cab or anything like that. Probably just scoot the bed back tape everything off and paint. I'm going to keep her the same color anyway. I really don't plan on driving the truck in the winters unless there is a need. My only plan for the winter is plowing my drive and my neighbors and keeping her off the road as much as possible.
Take care,
Eric

Actually got to spend a few hours Sunday on the truck. Didn't get as much as I wanted to done but we did make some head way. Lost a little bit of time running around buying bolts, nuts and washers for the Cab, Bed and dog house. Ran into a snag when taking off the old inner fenders. When unbolting them I discovered the actual fenders had a bit more rust on them than I thought. I guess I should have taken a better look. The passenger side isn't really that bad but the drivers is a whole other story. Only three of the bolts were actually holding the inner on. The rest were all rusted out. As for now I think we are going to patch them up and then order new fenders in the spring. Maybe? If the patches hold I may just leave them. I forgot to take pics of the rust spots.
We placed the dog house on the frame anyway. Mostly so we could measure bolt sizes and make a little room in the shop. I put a new filter and gasket in the trans. Installed the oil filter and oil. Got the wiring ran from the cab back. I left everything slack because we still need to move the bed back some in order to do the cab corners. Put the rear cab mount bolts in place and just spun the nuts on for now. Took care of a few other little things and cleaned up the shop some.
Hopefully I can stop by tomorrow and start prepping the inner fenders for paint. I may even get them primed? we'll see. I only have a few pics from Sunday but at least we made a few steps forward. We are trying our best to have her running by the end of the month. Couple more solid weekends and she may even be complete for now....
-

Eric, I know you do not know me. But I have to say that the above statement you made speaks volumes about you as a person, husband, & father.
I have to say this, if more people would think this way in the world right now, it would be a better place. You should pat yourself on your back for me since I can not do it.
-
It looks like you are really coming along on your truck. :) I have the same problem with my bed as well. I need to get all new supports for the floor. :(
I noticed you have a auto transmission with headers. My truck started out that way years ago. I had to pull the transmission once with those headers and boy was it a pain. One thing that I did was to trim the two tabs that stick out on the side of the transmission. I think I only took off an inch at most on each side. This allowed me to drop the transmission without any problems. It did not affect the function or safety of the transmission in any way. The next time you are under the truck, take a good hard look and you will see what I mean. Just a thought or tip. The decision is yours. I eventually changed my truck over to a standard transmission.
I commend your wife in wanting to get her RN degree. My hat is off to her. It is very hard to even get in a RN program here in WVA. There are so many people trying to get in. I just finished college in 2012 at the age of 50. Believe me it was very hard. My degree is in the health field so I met a lot of people trying for the RN program. I wish her and you the best of luck. :)
-
Thanks Bake.....don't show this to Ashley she may think I have feelings. LOL!! All kidding aside she is one amazing person. I am definitely the lucky one.
-
Thanks for the tip Don. We should be putting the exhaust on soon so I'll check it out. I was lucky enough to have our sister company make me a new rail. I was told I would have to buy a whole new bed skin to get new rails? Not sure if that is correct but I wasn't interested in finding out.
It took some time pushing her to go for it but she's doing great. She has one more class (chemistry) to finish up before she can start the actual nursing program. I know she'll do just fine.
Thanks again,
Eric
-
Great build and very detailed !Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
-
I think after you look at it you will agree with me about the trans. :) At least I hope.
Here is a very good tip for your wife to use in one of her college classes. Has she had Anatomy and Physiology yet? This is a weeding out class here. I started out with a class consisting of 75 students. Yeah when it ended I was one of 23 that passed! :o I had a "C" but I passed. In any event, if she has not taken this class yet, here is a very big tip. If she has access to a smart phone, download the free app "Speed Anatomy". It is a lot better than flash cards. If she needs help with blood typing let me know. I can show her a chart that was shown to me. It helped a great deal with the class as well. A lot of students struggled and some had to withdraw as this sunk their grade too low for them to pass. Anyhow I thought I would offer. Just let me know.
Now as for the bed... :( I am afraid that I am headed down the road to start with a new floor. I am not happy about it either.
-
She has already taken those two unless there is another round. I think she got an A and B? She did say they were very hard tho. I know she studies like crazy. My only job is to keep Riley entertained which at times is harder than Ashley's classes...LOL!
-
Quick update.
Got the cab and dog house lined up and bolted down. Got the bed moved back to make room for fixing the cab corners. Got the water pump installed. I need to find a pulley kit. Anyone have any suggestions? I've looked online but can't find what I want. All I can find is chrome or polished aluminum. Wanting to find all black. Needs to be for a short water pump.
Sorry I didn't get any pics but will take some Sunday.

Quick nOOb question for all you truck Gods....
I currently have a 350 trans with a 203 case (plan is to install a part time kit). The PO's father has a freshly rebuilt turbo 400 and 205 or 208 case (not sure which one it is) that has less than 500 miles of use. I have the opportunity to purchase the two. What would be a fair price and will it be worth the switch?
-
Here is my opinion FWIW. If he has a 400 with a gear driven 205- buy it. BUY it Now! Do not look back. Your drive shafts may need altered but it will be worth it. ;D I have never had the 208 aluminum transfer case but I do know they had a bad reputation for cracked cases around the tail shaft I believe. I would rather have the 500 pound 203 transfer case with a larger chain. BTW- I am not sure what it weighs but I know it weighs a lot. ;D
As far as price for the transmission and transfer case, the going rate years ago, and I do mean years ago, was $300 for both. What they cost now, considering the age of the parts and the availability or lack of, is something I can't tell you. Maybe someone will be along shortly to shed some light on the subject. Sorry... :-[
-
Thanks! I'm stopping by there to drop off some parts for the truck today after work. I'll try to get more info is he is home.
-
So it is a 400 with a 208 case. Both were rebuilt and have around 200 miles on them. Not sure what its worth but I think he wants $500. any input would be greatly appreciated.
-
If i were to go with the above set up would I need to change or alter my drive shafts?
-
Sorry Minus, I don't know if you will have to alter your drive shafts. I suspect that you will but I am not certain. I know that is not the help you are looking for. I am thinking that since it is a 400 transmission, it might have came out of a 3/4 ton truck. I am not sure and I could be wrong.
BTW- you might casually ask how long it has been since the transmission was used. I suspect that if it has been sitting for awhile, the bands might need adjusting. A manual transmission can sit for a long time whereas an automatic can't.
-
Thanks for your input Don5. I stopped by to drop off some more pieces to the puzzle last night and asked that very question. Turns out it has been sitting on his shop floor for about 2-3 yrs. I'm sure the 400/208 would be a fine set up for my intended use of the truck but I think i'm going pass on this one. After several days of thinking it over I feel its best to go with my current set up. I really don't want any further delays on this project. Winter is coming fast and I need this truck on the road. I still need to get all my firewood split and moved plus haul in some more.
I'm just going to install the part time kit then maybe look into a different set up later on down the road.
-
Once you install the kit, you will not think about another transmission. I think you have reached the right decision. I had the same combo until I changed it over to a 4 speed. ;D
-
a 4spd would be nice. Was it a tough project? I think something like that would be way over my head... :o
-
Not really. I got the transmission and transfer from one guy and had to get the bracket, pedals and linkage from another guy. Yeah then I had to put them both together and hope that I had everything! ;D I put the pedals and bracket in first and then replaced the transmission and transfer case. I have never looked back.
I know you could do it simply because if you have any questions just post them here and someone will answer. ;D It sure beats back in the day let me tell you! Back then you were on your own or had to rely on a good knowledgeable friend. This is how I learned. I also found a Clymer super manual on these trucks that I considered "the Bible" for these trucks. I have looked around in my garage and my dad's garage for it but have not found it. This manual is no longer in print. However the books on the tech page here are just as good. ;D
-
I know we are making some progress on this truck but man is it taking forever...LOL! I think watching paint dry on a snails rear would go faster.
Still having trouble finding pulleys but we are making some headway. Started in on the cab corners and discovered the inner cab corners needed replace as well. I actually ordered them from the store on here. I dont know much about this stuff but they looked nice so hopefully they last. Got the outer and inner cut out and started fitting the new ones. I was able to paint the new inner fenders this weekend. They turned out ok I guess. They came primed but I took some scotch brite to them cleaned them and re primed. I put two coats of matte black on after the primer. We'll see how they hold up. The next task was to fix the fenders so I could install the new inners.
I didn't have any metal laying around so I improvised. We still had the old cab laying around so why not reuse it before taking it to the salvage yard. So I cut pieces out of the back of the cab to use as patches. So after a little cutting, hammering, bending and shaping we had pretty decent patches. They are all tacked into place now. Still need finish welding them in clean them up and get some paint on them. Then we can mark and drill the mounting holes for the inner fenders. Hoping to have another good day of progress this weekend. I really wanted to have this thing finished by the end of this month but it's just not going to happen.

Minus, at least you are doing something, more than I can say right now.

It's tough Bake with work and putting all new flooring in two bedrooms and our downstairs living room. Plus trying to keep the boss happy...lol Hopefully this weekend we can button a bunch of things up. Hopefully you will find some time as well.

A small correction to an earlier post.....
I was mistaken on which water pump I have. I had it stuck in my head that mine was a short water pump but its actually a long. I honestly wasn't sure how to tell the difference. Like I said before all this stuff is new to me but after some research on how to tell I can say I've learned something new. Also, I have given up on finding stock crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley. I've looked everyday on ebay, craigslist and various other places with no luck. I called 3 or 4 local junk yards as well. So yesterday I orders a polished aluminum set that should be here next week. A far as I know those are the last pieces to getting this old girl ready to fire for the first time. Still have to mount the gas tank and run fuel lines hopefully this weekend.
Anyway, my apologizes for the mistake.
-
It sounds like you are doing well considering all of the other things going on in your life! ;D I hope the engine sounds good when you get it started! ;D

Read through your thread and so far great progress. Keep it up. As a newbie myself I'll be seeing how your project is going and learn some stuff along the way too. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thanks Michael!
How's this for some irony...
After I searched for weeks I finally gave up on stock pulleys and bought a polished aluminum set. One of the guys at work came up to me today and said "I hear you are looking for a set of stock pulleys. I have a set laying around you can have for $25". :o What the.....o well I guess it's things like this that keep life interesting. ;D
Hope everyone has a great day
Eric

Lol minus I would return the polished set and get the other set for 25 dollars, Eric, I almost made the same mistake, I was ready to order a full blown polished serpentine belt pulley setup from march performance and ran into a guy with used pulleys and ended up making a trade for them.... Just something to think about..... Great progress bud, definitely a nice build buddy!

I thought about canceling the order but by the time I found out he had them my order already shipped.
Good new today. My pulleys were scheduled for delivery next week but they came UPS today at work. WOOHOO!! Now with any luck they will be the correct ones...lol
-
It sounds like you are ready to go! ;D I would pick up the ones for $25 "just in case." I know that it is too late but I found a set on ebay. They came off a Chevelle and the guy wanted $75. BTW- I have the same luck when I am looking for something as well. :(

A quick update and a few pics from this past Sunday.
I only had a few hours of free time but at least I got to work on her. The new cab corners (inner and outer) are in place. Still need to button the outers up. I can't weld so the PO's dad is doing anything of that sort. Hopefully I can learn a few things about welding by watching and asking lots of questions. I forgot to take pics but will take some this weekend. Got the new fuel pump and push rod installed. Installed the new pulleys.
I need to learn to pay better attention when ordering parts. I thought the pulley kit came with the power steering pulley. However it came with the alternator pulley. No biggie I guess. I switched the alternator pulley so it will match. Now I just need to order one for the power steering. Also I ordered a new bracket for the alt. I thought I ordered a polished aluminum bracket to match the pulleys but when I opened the box it was chrome. Will be kinda funny opening the hood and the bracket will be the only chrome piece...lol Also installed the new alt. Well I just have it finger tight for now.

You know Minus.... Your build is called a beginners build..... But I don't see why.... Your addressing a lot of issues.... Not asking for a TON of help..... And making major progress,,,, love the build man

Thank you Sir...but I have to give credit to the PO and his dad. They've helped a bunch and pointed me in the right direction when needed. Supposed to work on the truck this sunday. Hopefully we can get the engine bay buttoned up. I doubt we'll get her fired up but should be getting close.
-
Need a little help guys. Started on the part time kit Sunday and I'm a bit confused. I think I'm just making harder than it needs to be. I'm pretty good at that...lol I have it apart but I'm a little unsure of how the new "gears" go in. Either the instructions aren't very well written or it's my general lack of knowledge of the inner workings of the T-Case. I'm leaning towards the latter. I searched this site and found a thread with pics but for some reason I can't view the pics? http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=16045.0
I know that link is for a 74 K20 but I would think the concept is the same. I just need to see a pic of how the new kit should look assembled then I should be able to install. I just want to make sure what I'm thinking is correct.
Thanks in advance...
Eric
-
which images? The ones with Imageshack on them no one can see as they were linked...
-
Yes, those are the ones. I think I have the kit figured out now but i'm nervous about the reliability after seeing how the components work together.
-
post what you have.
-
I'll have to get some pics, but I have the Mile Marker 501 kit (not the shaft kit). I may be way off but to me it looks like the tiny little teeth on the differential carrier will be the only thing engaging front drive line. My carrier doesn't look like any of the pics I've found so im guessing there is a light duty and heavy duty? I guess I just can't wrap my mind around those little teeth driving everything up front.
-
Captkaos...
Here are a few pics of what I have. The first pic and the last are of the tiny teeth I mentioned. They are basically on the i.d. of the carrier. I apologize if my terminology is incorrect.

Last pic of the teeth.

Can anyone tell me what the recommended fluid is for a T-Case? I should be ready to refill mine this weekend.
Thanks,
Eric
-
I've always used ATF for t-case fluid. What t-case are you running with your setup?
-
I have the 203. I've heard a few dif types of fluid. This is all new to me so I really don't know.
-
ok. on the 203 disregard my ATF response. that uses a motor oil. 10/40 and 10/30 will work just fine. Some guys with use gear oil 80/90. It honestly is all personal preference. overall The goal is lubrication, you will accomplish with any of those options.
-
Fantastic.....Thank you very much
-
Here are a few spacers I made at work for the power steering pump.
Used 3/4" 316ss.
-
The spacer is a pita when lost . I have used nuts and washers before. Not the proper parts but it got me home.

SHE'S ALIVE......SHE'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got all the fuel lines and tranny lines ran today. Got the radiator installed. Primed the oil pump. Put a couple gallons of gas in the tank. Added a bit of fuel to the carb and she fired off. Took a few tries but she fired off and ran on her own. WOOOHOOO!!!!
Still have lots of little things to do but so excited that she can run. Only bad news for the day is that the gas tank has a small leak. Not sure if it can be patched or if i'll need a new tank?
I was going to take a video of her running but I got so excited I forgot to...lol She ran on open headers so I'll button up the exhaust and get a video then.
-
Well I ordered a new gas tank today. Plus I found some brackets and straps on fleabay so I ordered those too. I figured since I replaced the fuel pump, lines and now the tank I might as well order a new sending unit. Knowing my luck if I don't replace it now I'll have to do it soon any way so why not.
Anyway I'll try and have a better update after this weekend.
-
That's such great news minus congrats on the motor finally running! How does it run for you? Any issues? So when are you able to start driving it? I may be mounting a spare fuel tank soon, on the left side though. Anyways congrats minus ! Post some pictures up for us to see

Congrats! It's always rewarding to hear a new engine purr!

Sorry for such a long delay. life has been crazy but there has been lots of progress on the truck. I'll try to get this thing caught back up this week. Phase one of the truck is 99% complete now. The last things on the list is to get the speedometer working and take it in for a front end alignment. After those are finished she will be road worthy.
I'll start with the cab corners. The new ones are on and painted. We just painted them black for now which doesn't really match but since I plan on painting her in the spring it's ok for now. My main goal was coverage in hopes to keep rust at bay until spring. We'll she if it was achieved.
I can't seem to get my pictures to load so I'll add them from work tomorrow and continue to get this thing caught up.
Thanks,
Eric

Ok.. so here are a few pics of the cab corners. You will notice in one of the pictures what looks to be a crescent moon. I was working on something under the truck and when i crawled out and went to stand up I put my darn thumb right smack on the cab corner. D'oh!! At first I was a little mad but had a good chuckle over it after a few minutes. Other than that I think they came out good. Not perfect but that's Ok. Like I said before I can't take credit for the weld job because that's something I'm not good with. Maybe some day?
-
I had to replace my gas tank because of a hole hidden behind one of the straps. I went with a 20 gal tank from rock auto. At the time they had the best price even with shipping. I think I paid $85 shipped? I ordered it on a Thursday and had on Friday afternoon. Fit nicely and seems to do it's job. Once the tank and cab corners were installed we were able to set the bed back in place.
Boy was it a pain to get the bed lined up. Of course when you put an 86 bed on a 79 frame there are bound to be some issues. We got the alignment as close as we could and drilled new holes in the frame. We had to add a couple shims under the bed to even things out. I wasn't able to add the new spray in bed liner because of the cold weather so that will have to wait til spring.
Here are a few pics of the new gas tank and the bed finally bolted in place.
-
Here are a few pics of the engine. Nothing special just a mostly stock 350 out of a 78 K5. Has an aftermarket intake, headers and true dual exhaust. I believe everything was complete when these were taken other than the correct burp tank. The original had a crack and was leaking. I found a couple at a Chevy dealer in Oregon. $21 shipped. I didn't think that was too bad. I'm not sure how to post video's but I do have a few of her running. Mostly ones prior to having the timing dialed in. At least I think it's dialed in lol.
-
Your truck looks good and the cab corners turned out very nice. I really like the red and white color combo. Nice truck you have.

Thanks! My goal is to repaint in the spring. I was thinking all red just for cost and simplicity but the red/white grows more on me everyday. Right now i'm leaning more towards keeping her Red/White.
