So as the title says, I'm going to attempt to make a air cleaner with dual snorkels/openings/mouths/whatever you call them... I remember seeing one on a truck when I was a kid and thought it was cool. I also remember either Olds or Buick had them on some of the models.
So I went to the local pick-n-pull and found some donor air cleaner assemblies...

cut up the rusty one for the snorkel and placed it in some distilled vinegar to soak... after 24 hours and a brush with a toothbrush they look like this...

so now to trim it up so I can graft it into the other air cleaner assembly.

Do not know if you saw these, they might help you out some.

Hauling it's dual snorkel on his truck.

I have always liked making some things myself and custom to my taste, so I will be following this thread to see what you do.
-
that's exactly what I'm going for. that's awesome. if that's an actually Olds air cleaner assembly I bet he's pissed off some Olds guys. lol.
-
I believe the story goes he used to have an Old's diesel in his truck before he switched it to gas.
-
so I took out the piece, washed it off, dried it as quick as I could and primed it. it still did a little flash rust it a couple of areas. took a before picture of my original air cleaner lid before I put it in the tub of vinegar.

then started working on the air cleaner. cut out the opening for the 2nd snorkel..

fit the two together..

tacked and then welded...

cleaned it up and primered it...

and painted. very happy with the outcome. its actually a satin finish so it won't be this shiny.

That turned out really nice, another thread to be saved for future reference. Thanks dvdswan.
-
wow great work dude came out looking awesome.
if you dont know where to look it aint even noticable
-
That looks killer man! I was gonna build one of these too. Looks like I better get to work! I hope mine comes out as nice as yours.
-
thanks guys. now I just have to find some factory intake tubing. I did find one but it was trashed on the air cleaner side.
-
Everytime I think about this I want to build it more and more. I should just go start on it because it's driving me crazy.
-
An easier way to do it is to either use a holesaw, drill Two holes & connect them where the second snorkle will go or a small wiz wheel & cut a rectangle. On the "scrap" air cleaner, use a wiz wheel on grinding wheel on the inside 4 corners & grind through the little spotwelds & remove the snorkle...this way the air cleaner base remains all one-piece, weld the snorkle back on from the inside & there is no finish work.
If a person doesn't have access to a welder, a 1/4" "flange" of the scrap air cleaner could be left on the snorkle & pop rivets used in the 4 corners to attach it to the air cleaner.
Mine is an Original Oldsmobile air cleaner, so I removed the original long tapered snorkle with the bell mouth on the end & installed both of the truck snorkles.
I also clocked the vacuum pull-off to route the hoes so they looked like a factory deal. Hope this Helps, Lorne

that's a great idea Haulin it. I didn't think of that, it might have been a little easier too.
-
Impressive. You did it the professional way! I did the same thing Haulin just posted above using two tbi-era intakes.

The 66-68 Toronado had a very handsome dual snorkel air filter
-
Hard to beat the '67 Olds 4-4-2 W-30 setup.

BTW, you either need to plug the extra heat riser inlet port on the bottom of the new snorkel, or connect up a second heat stove on that side. Don't leave it open, or in cold weather the carb will be slow to come up to temp, and performance and mileage will suffer.
You can just cork it up, but you do need to hook up vacuum to the second air door vacuum motor. Once the carb temp comes up, both air doors will open for the cold air induction tubes. Most of the factory double-snorkel air cleaners had the heat stove on one side only, though both sides had the vacuum door to close off cold outside air until the carb heats up.
-
good to know. thank you Rich.

How's the dual snorkel working out

so I finally got the heat riser installed and the other side blocked off. the idle doesn't change though. what I mean is the heat riser works, the flaps are closed until the heat gets to the flap mechanism then they open. I think my choke isn't working right as the idle doesn't rise on the cold mornings. I rebuilt the carb over the summer and pretty sure it was put together right as the truck runs great.

hey dvdswan i cant see the picture due to a firewall can you host it here or on photobucket?

Digging up and old thread here. I'm interested in a dual snorkel set up. Today I traded a few emails with Pierre at Air Inlet Systems. They seem to have a great off the shelf piece. Good for me since my fabrication skills are less than great. Someone on this forum named Mike Erwin used their set up as seen in an earlier post:
http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/ram_air.htm
Is Mike still around? Anyone else use this? My question as of now is, what do you use on the driver's side to attach the hose? The knock out hole isn't as large as the passenger side hole.
