Title: Turbo charging VS Super charging

whats everybody's opinion? supercharging a chevy V8 compared to Turbo charging a chevy v8.
also, prices, results where to find the kits, etc. thanks

Here are the differences:

Supercharger: driven via belt by the engine's crankshaft. Boost is available at any rpm. Doesn't affect driveability or mileage much.

Turbocharger: driven via gases by vehicle's exhaust system. Boost available once turbo spools up.

As for kits, there aren't a heck of a lot of kits for turbochargers on Chevy V-8s of any kind (unless you have a 5th generation Corvette). Superchargers have many kits on Chevy 8s, wether in the form of Roots-type, screw-type, or centrifugal.

Our rounded-line trucks have huge engine bays, allowing even the fitting of a smaller Roots-type supercharger under a stock or low cowl induction hood.

A recent vehicle in Chevy High Performance's "Readers Rides" section was a big-block powered mid-'80s 1-ton dually crew cab with a Roots-type supercharger and single 850 Holley under a mere 2" cowl hood.

My suggestion: get a supercharger. Generally they're more reliable for a gasoline engine, are easier to install, and cost less from what I've seen.

thanks for the info, I had my heart set on supercharged but I was just curious what anybody had to say about turbo. One thing I noticed about turbo charged vehicles they seem to be broken alot more.

You'll see more turbocharged vehicles from the facotry compared to supercharged. Both do the same thing, deliver boost.

Supercharging is less efficiant. Since a belt from the engine turns the compressor to provide boost, it takes power away from the engine to turn that compressor. Turbo's run off exaust gasses, therefor dont take the power away. Some turbo's need lots of RPM to spool up and provide boost. Thats why we have twin turbos. One turbo spools up quick low in the RPM's and provides low boost. Then the RPM's get up and the other turbo takes over. Turbos require a speacial exaust because of the extreme temperatures. Turbos really dont work well with a carb. They need EFI to get max gains. Superchargers are happy with either carbs or EFI.
If you have the cash, a EFI/turbo setup is THE way to go. But thats lotsa cash your gona end up spending on it.

get a B&M street blower good quality i know a few who have them and like it...........turbo is more invloved.......

I have a hot rod book where they put a half supercharger on a 454. I dont remember the details but you can use this one on kinda stock motors. Ill look see if i can find the magazine.

what is a half supercharger? you mean a ATI, Vortex, Paxton style? I have that article and i think it produced 700+ HP.

I dont know much about Superchargers. But I am a Toyota Supra freak so I know a lot about Turbo's. My opinion, Superchargers are great for the price. They dont cost that much, aren't that complicated, and are easy enough to install. However, they will never give you as much HP as a large Turbo. Which can become VERY expensive, very complicated to install(especially Twin Turbo's) and since they are bombarded with extremely hot exhaust gasses 100% of the time. So I would imagine they wouldnt' last quite as long. IMHO, if you wan't serious HORSEPOWER, the turbo is the way to go. If you are just looking for a cheap power plant, the supercharger is the way to go.
