whats up guys ive been pretty inactive for the last few years here. been into other things. other cars, hobbies, life, ect. and havent been in the trucks much. i still have my 77 C10 but its in the garage on jackstands till who knows when :-\
my buddy got this '79 about 4 years ago and i told him if he ever wanted to sell it, id be there with cash. so he buys an 08 f350 and says wanna buy the Chevy? i say yes sir. $1000 later its mine.
79 K10
350/350/203
lockout hubs
single flowmaster
homemade bed
LED tailights
toolbox mounted under bed
pretty much all there is to it.
it was running pretty bad it wouldnt idle would barely start and would pretty much just sputter its way down the road all the time lol he used it for towing here and there and as a beater truck basically. it was somebodys restoration project some years ago it had been sitting for quite awhile when he got it. the paints pretty good and the hood is the only major rust spot thats visible but look underneath and youll see some halfassed rust repairs. one of those looks good from far but far from good kinda jobs lol
i tinkered with it alot over the last few weeks and found numerous little issues and fixed just about all of them other than the timing still isnt just right and the motor/tranny/tcase mounts need replaced. spiffed it up a bit too its been fun ive got some more in store for it nothing major.
first day i got it. takin the dash apart to install some gauges
-
new seat cover and some pics of the bed
-
i HATED those fenders. so i got some mudlfaps from amazon put them on and cut the fenders off. much better now
-
i changed the exhaust up a bit. punched the cat out cut the ends off and welded it over a piece of pipe and made the exit at the corner of the toolbox instead of behind the rear tire
got a set of 33/12.50/15s and im getting a nice set of factory rally wheels with rings and centers from the guy i got the truck from
painted the headlight buckets and grill. put a new bowtie on the grill and shined up all the chrome
-
That's shaping up to being a pretty nice truck. What do you have left to do ?
-
Looks good
-
thanks guys.
it needs some minor maintenance stuff. tranny pan gasket, front shocks, timing set, tcase mounts(doing them today), and im gunna tinker with a small handfull of other little stuff like the radio and i might end up removing the bed to install a rear sliding window then putting a removable center section in the window guard on the bed.
the tires that are on it now have good tread but they are dry rotting around the bead and the rear passenger side wheel is an odd one out of the 4. so im getting the rally wheels and mounting the 33s since it needs better tires to be safe and that odd wheel bugs the crap out of me
ive been into Hondas for the past 4 years or so its nice to get into something old again i miss these trucks
-
i could jiggle the transfer case by hand they were so bad. $25 later all brandy new
-
Nice purchase, I like the look without the fenders
-
coming alone nicely.
-
Definitely a cool build and project !
-
drove it roughly 200 miles on saturday. sat in a good bit of traffic and it never got over 180 degrees and it never missed a beat it idled perfectly the whole time and i drove it pretty hard to see how it would do.
about 5 miles from home started having a problem with the steering and found out the lower ball joint is shot. so im doing all 4 ball joints both front rotors and pads so itll be all done and right.
-
9 hours sunday, 4 monday, and 5 hours yesterday and all now all thats left is a brake caliper ordered today installing tomarrow.
did rotors that were so pitted they were grinding the pads down, pads, balljoints that were shot, u joints that were half seized, wheel bearing seals, and the last is a caliper that is so rusted it wont compress to get the pads over the rotor. its been quite a task but its been fun learning to do all this 4x4 stuff
-
the old tractor reverse light crapped out so i got a set of LED floodloights from northentool.com for $70. they are 1200 lumens each and work very nicely they came with all stainless hardware and are very sturdy
i wanted to mount them where the old light was but there was no room to get in there with a drill to make new holes so i used some aluminum for a mounting bar

You should be able to see when you back up now, those are nice.

finally got the 77 on the road 8)
got the push bar installed and got my 33s mounted on my rally wheels finally. the wheels need a new paint job but itll do for now. im just not a big fan of silver wheels on a silver truck

done some real improvements since summer. ive been chasing an engine problem since i got the truck. it just never wanted to run quite right so i slowly eliminated the possibilities one by one.
full tune up
new carb
new distributer
set the timing a dozen times or so
nothing worked
finally narrowed it down to a stretched timing chain. took the cap off to watch the rotor and i could turn the ratchet on the crank pulley from 1oclock to 5oclock and the rotor wouldnt move at all :o
so i set out to do the chain. i got a gasket kit from felpro, a comp cams double roller timing chain set, a proform balancer installer and a craftsman balance/steering wheel puller. well the puller was a 2 bolt style(didnt even cross my mind) and the balacer is obviously a 3 bolt. duh. so i got 3 bolts from lowes and fired up my hypertherm to cut my own puller in 2 minutes 8)
then found exactly what i was looking for. it was this loose on both sides
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp153/trailertrashtransam/SAM_2244.jpg)
put it all back together iwth the new chain and it runs like a champ 8)
i got a CB and PA hooked up now and also got a small amp from Amazon that im going to use on 2 speakers and an AUX cord for my Ipod.

Really digging the truck. Nice! Cool build ;)
-
I really hope you replaced those cam gears. The teeth on that upper one is absolutely SHOT. The nylon over steel is crap.

thanks dude

you mean the cam timing chain sprocket? the chain and sprocket set is all i replaced.
-
Good and you went with a double roller correct ;)
-
sure did.
ill be using the same on my C10 this spring. good quality
-
i want to ask a personal question (concerning the license plate), but i'm not sure if i should......
-
I'm not prejudice nor am i easily offended
-
I replaced the flowmaster exhaust with a 12 inch long 3 inch Cherry Bomb glasspack and 3 inch tailpipe. its a bit louder which is exactly what i was going for and i painted it up real nice
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp153/trailertrashtransam/SAM_2322.jpg)
I had a set of factory S10 tow hooks on the front but when i put the push bar on they had to come off. i had toyed around with different ideas about a tow hook on the front. not that i go offroading or anything but driving in the snow and all i mean you never know when you might need something to get you unstuck.
i dug through my scrap steel pile and found this piece that was some kind of bracket or something or other. its 3/4" thick so i figured i could cut around the holes and make it work without buying a plate and itll be something neat to tinker with i love little projects like this.
it isnt perfectly cut because 3/4s is a bit thick for my Hypertherm 30XP but hey it got the job done.
mocked it up to bolt in where the factory hooks do. then i had to cut a bit of the pushbar away
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp153/trailertrashtransam/hook3.jpg)
i painted it and made sure i could use the threaded plate from the S10 hook
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp153/trailertrashtransam/hook4.jpg)
all done!

Looks nice!
-
You ruined a perfectly good grill guard :( Looks good though
-

if the chrome was in better than piss poor shape, then cutting it would have been out of the question. and thanks man

i kept having trouble with connections rusting/corroding on the tail light wiring so i decided to redo all the connections. it has one of these junction blocks at the rear and one under the hood(one at the front end of the wires and one at the rear end of the wires). that is how the original owner wired it up. so i just removed all the excess wiring and used some heat shrink tubing and some wire coverings to make it nice and clean looking.

no huge updates. been driving the truck daily for quite some time and fixing little things here and there. had an issue with the trans not long ago but its been going good since so i guess run it till it blows lol
soon here im going to be replacing the oil pan gasket, intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and anything else that needs replacing along the way. that stuff is long overdue.
I bought a new welder a little while back and have been looking for little project ideas for my spare time. when i first put the brush guard on the truck it had little chrome hooks that were on sideways and they made great steps to use when checking the oil ect. i took them off and put my tow hook on one side and never made a step for the other side because i could never figure out exactly how i wanted to do it. so i got an idea the other day
i used some scrap i had. some kinda bracket and what looks like a section of machinery track. some welding, plasma cutting, grinding , and painting later it came out better than i expected

That turned out looking great! I like it! Almost like a giant metal gas pedal! Lol!
-
thanks man!
-
That actually came out pretty sweet! Looks professionally made. Good job.
-
thanks! :)

The Misses got me a light bar for Christmas. its not some super expensive one but its decent quality and its bright as heck. it has adjustable mounts so it fit my brushguard perfectly. i hooked it up with a relay under the hood and a waterproof trailer plug so i can unplug it and remove it easily.
then i had my own personal second Christmas for myself.
all Felpro stuff
one piece oil pan
valve covers
thermostat
water pump
intake manifold
spring for the lower radiator hose
valve cover studs
and whats not in the pics is new radiator hoses, thermostat, ARP intake bolts, and a few other small parts
hood, horns, and light bar out of the way
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp153/trailertrashtransam/4_1.jpg)
oil pan and valve covers leaked oil pretty badly. i should have done the oil pan last year when i did the timing chain and gasket but live and learn. i have been wanting to do all this since last year but life and other things get in the way.
i did the oil pan first. which was pretty easily done. the hardest part was getting the trans cooler lines, engine to trans braces, and all the caked oil crud out of the way.
this was after 3 cans of degreaser and 2 rounds of scraping crud and 2 rounds of pressure washing. i felt like an archeologist when i finally uncovered all the intake bolts
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp153/trailertrashtransam/5.jpg)
found this under the intake. the gaskets had no metal plates in the crossover and the gasket was cooked and i all this crud and baked itself on. so i chiseled it off and shop vacked it out
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp153/trailertrashtransam/11.jpg)
there was formagasket everywhere. at some point in the past the passenger side valve cover had been removed and reinstalled with a reused cork gasket and formagasket sammich as an attempt to seal.
this valve cover had a plate with a hole welded onto it. the hole is for the breather so im guessing the valve covers didnt come with a factory breather hole which is odd because the other one has a factory pcv baffle/grommet. these are the covers that were on it when i got the truck and i thought maaaaybe it was a crate engine because of the covers but i couldnt be sure.
once i got the intake off i could get to the block ID and scrape all the crud off and found out it IS a 350ci crate engine from some point in the past. and when i got to the oil pan i found it to be a 4 bolt main.
almost there. using my slotted valve adjusting covers. some may disagree with adjusting the valves while the engine is running but thats to be expected.
all back together. i replaced some small things like the heater hose outlet vac lines and hose clamps and cleaned everything up real good. i didnt bother painting anything because its just a daily driver. nothing to show off under the hood.
Not a single leak! and it runs amazingly now that the intake is sealed, valves are adjusted, and the timing is advanced from 8* to 12*.
it actually idles properly and no more driving with 2 feet for the first 10 minutes 8)
-
Very well done.

Nice Work. Dripping oil is a pet peeve of mine.
