Title: A M general Optimizer 6500 diesel engine
Post by: 4x4x4x on May 04, 2014, 03:00:07 pm
Replacing my 1995 6.5 diesel with a low mileage A M General 6500 engine. since 1999 GM no longer builds the 6.5 Diesel.  A M General purchased the rights to the 6.5 and redesigned it to solve the problems the old GM engine has.   we are looking forwarded to trying out the new motor after it's installed.  the 6500 long block was purchased from Ted's Trucks.  ETA is May 9th.

appears the 6.5 has a busted ring or piston.

the shop should be done with the r/r of the diesel in my 1985 k10. the GEP optimizer looks good. here are some pictures of the new motor while still on the stand (waiting for exhaust manifold bolts)  the new motor takes all metric bolts so it takes some time to find them all.

I was in AM General during their shutdown and saw all the Hummers sitting there as well as the 6.5 engine/trans combo hanging on chains just waiting to meet the bodies.  Impressive looking

with a little luck, our truck should be out of the shop today.  the shop had several delays in completing the engine work due to faulty or wrong parts. the two major problems included needing to replace the NEW radiator with a second New radiator after discovering corrosion in the new radiator around the oil  and trans cooler connections (found after engine was installed).  the other parts problem was the flex plate. it took three tries to get the correct one.  the one that works with starter is a flex plate for a 1991 through 1994 6.5.

our truck is finally out of the shop.  first driving impressions....wow, what a difference a new motor makes,  very quiet (for a diesel) no rattle, just the sound of a powerful motor (has a nice deep rumble coming out of the 4" exhaust). we're planning a hwy trip this weekend and it will be interesting t check MPG.

along with replacing the motor, the radiator, flex plate, engine mounts, water pump, glow plugs, batteries, and all hoses and belts were replaced.

just got back from a 175 mile road trip. mostly hwy with some city driving.   was able to get 23.5 MPH from the A M general optimizer 6500 diesel.  not bad for a 85 k10 with banks turbo, 4" exhaust, 700r4, 411 gears and 33 1250r 15 at tires. should be able to do slightly better with pure hwy miles.  i'm impressed with the used Humvee diesel I got from ted's trucks.

Nice to hear that the truck did as well as it did.  How was the power and torque ?

power & torque seems much better than the gm 6.5 the optimizer replaced. now pulling hwy hills in od instead of downshifting into d. turbo boost is at 1 to 2 lbs and about 1/2 throttle at 60+mph.

we were able to fit the GEP motor in our k10 with the deep oil pan
