my 84 is slow, my s10(4cyl, auto) is very slow, now the camaro is another story. Took it out for a shakedown after the new motor went in. First day off the trailer it went a 5.20 (1/8)  which was pretty good for new new setup. New motor on alcohol for the first time and still doing that good, hmmmmm, I see some high 4's on the horizon........... next we do the 69 camaro for the 10.5 tire class. The motor's done, the chassis is being built, looking for some 4.70's out of it.... a blown 640 and alky is a truly wonderful thing to experience.

76chevyman, how the heck did you get that much power from a 355 with 1.94 intake valves and a 270h cam? Im not buying it
Heres my 383 build
10.2:1 compression
vortec heads
comp 280H cam [230@.050, .480 lift]
comp roller tip rockers
eddy victor intake
750dp carb
hei w/ MSD 6a and blaster 2
1 5/8" full length headers going into 3" collectors and full dual 2.5" exaust
DD2000 says 395hp and 430lbs/ft of torque, and I should be putting down mid to high 13's with slicks. this is on a 78 c10 with a muncie wide ratio 4 speed and 3.73 gears

picture this, last run of the season for the motor. Just make a pass and we'll pull it down over the winter when then season is slow...... easier said than done. One pass, a light dose of spray, runs a nice 5.08 even after lifting for a small bit of tire shake.............. crossed the line, shook a bit, let off and clunk. Yep, just plain clunk and nothing. Hmmmm, somethin' ain't right here boys and girls. Pulled it down yesterday and to our total dismay, the oil pickup came off, lost pressure for a sec(not good for a big motor at 7500rpm) and #3 and #4 rods spun........ got hot and kicked a rod off #3 cylinder. The block will live, the crank is junk, broke two pistons, two rods(1 broke, the other hot) and hurt the cam. I'm really glad the brodix's lived though.......... frikken head work is pricey. Anyway, now we start on the big motor for next year!!!!!  oh yea, broke my giggered sheetmetal oil pan too.... now THAT pissed me off!!!!

OUCH! Your going to weld that pickup on the pump with the new motor now arent ya? :)

Everyone should, this happens more then most people relize.

Post by: 84 silverado on October 11, 2002, 06:30:00 pm
oddly enough the pickup tube WAS welded in two different spots. Maybe we should weld them ourselves next time........

Post by: bored and stroked on October 12, 2002, 10:30:00 pm
It was welded? DAM now thats just not fair! :)  Yeah Id either weld it yourself or slap some JB weld on the next one for the heck of it.

Those 2WD's only weigh 4000?  I wish my '83 K10 Longbox only weighed that.  I hauled a bunch of junk to the landfill a few weeks ago - they wiegh you coming and going to know how much to charge you.  My truck, with me in it was 5100 Lbs - HEAVY!!!  I will need about 600 horsepower to get a 13.50 quarter.  LOL!

I got an 81 shortbox fleetside w/ a 355 forged bottom end and crane energy max cam.  I got double hump heads w/ 2.02/1.60 heads.  Im running an elelbrock rpm air-gap intake and a holley 750.  An accel distriutor/supercoil/8.5wires/plugs.  A TH400 w/ transpak and 2,000 stall converter.  A 12 bolt w/ 3.42 gears and run slicks when I drag.  My best ever was a 13.24 in the 1/4 mile.  If i could cut some weight and add some bottle the mid 12s coud be very easy..

My 85' Blazer 4x4 ran a 16.4 @ 91 mph.  It has a 355 w/performer and a stage2 jet quadrajet, 1 5/8 dynomax headers a y-pipe a stock catalytic converter to a 2.5 dual.  31x10.5 bfg's wieghs in at about 5k and the tranny needs to be rebuilt. 0-60 is about 8 seconds. Pretty far from the stock blazer w/ a 305 which ran a 19.8 @ 74 mph.

My best in the 1/8 was an 11.1@59mph with a 2.1 60' time. This is on a bone stock 78 4x4 long bed with  a 350, TH350, 2 barrel, gagging like heck, and a good foot atop the gas pedal:D 8)

1978 chevy 1/2 ton, 355 w/vortec heads, 9.4-1 compression, performer rpm vortec intake, 600 edelbrock carb, XE268 cam and kit, summit hi-po HEI recurved, 1 5/8" headers, dual 2 1/4" exhaust w/terminator mufflers, 2000 stall B&M convertor (flashes 2100), 3.08 gears, 4500 pounds empty. Ran a best of 15.24@97.30. Too much cam and intake for the gears and weight...it is pretty slow out of the hole and then pulls hard above 2500 rpm's (as seen by the mph). I will be switching to a regular performer vortec intake and a bit smaller cam soon...hope to see some 14.5's with the added torque. The 1st engine I built for this truck used the same short block, with lightly ported 882's, weiand 8004, 266 cam dynamics cam, and a stock convertor. It ran 16.06@89.45 burning the tires 40' out of the hole.

hot78- your lossing a lot of power going from a RPM to normal performer intake. The only time a RPM makes less torque and HP then the performer is below 1500rpm. Even a stock convertor flashes above 1500rpm, so you will get NO improvment. Just a little FYI for a vortec head lover :P

Title: Another vortec lover, huh?
Post by: HOT78 on March 23, 2003, 12:05:00 am
B&S, I thought I seen you over on the camaro or chevelle board. Yes, I do love them vortecs...enough that I bought another set to use on the 388 I am building for my nova. But don't tell me about the rpm being better than the performer above 1500 rpms...I already bought a performer last year :rolleyes  I am going to use the rpm on the 388 for now (super vic vortec won't fit under the stock hood...cowl induction will be coming later). I also have a 650 spread bore holley to go on the performer for the truck. The main reason for the smaller intake and carb (I have a 750 on it now) is because I will be installing a smaller cam too and hope to get high 'teens mileage out of it as I will be doing a lot of towing this summer. The XE268 is definately too big for max performance with 4500 pounds and 3.08 gears...and it really needs a 2500 stall convertor, but it is still fun to drive.

So you have a 350 with vortecs and are building a 388 with em too? Dam your smart ;)
In my 79 I have a 99 vortec 350 and in my 78 I have a vortec headed 383 :D

Title: good and bad first race of the season....
Post by: 84 silverado on April 07, 2003, 08:14:00 pm
we took our "new" car out for the first time to a regional NHRA top sportsman event this weekend. We qualified the car even WITH the smallest motor package there at a 7.42 @183mph. Saturday's weather was somewhat better than yesterdays and we guessed very badly. Went out first round with a .59 @ 176. Oh well, we felt good just getting in the show against some of those guys and we didn't break a thing all weekend. To top it off we won best engineered of the event against some of the best in the nation. Oh, it's a 99 firebird(jerry bickle built) with a "smaller than last year" 565 meriln/brodix combo. Hope to run better at the next event. Man, the nhra is SO much better organized than the ihra stuff we've been doing. I don't think we'll go back now!!! Thanks to Montgomery Motorsports Park for a nice event even with the threat of rain and 500 cars to deal with.
