As a for instance...
I'm selling off my van and impala and an old tractor. Ought to get me $16k at least...
Some of these 01-02 camaros are expensive, but SUPER low miles.
But I'd have to sell off my truck too to get the lowest mileage ones... Like 20k or less.
I'm the kind of guy who would buy a 20k camaro and DD it, (far as im concerned some lovely soul held my favorite car for me, until i was ready)
Those cars are kind of my achilles heel. have been for 12 or 14 years. Would i hate myself for this? I'm not gonna take what comes along, but buy when the perfect car comes along... I want this car, or one exactly like it, make it my own, super low mileage, bad. and drive it...
This is the camaro i want, perfectly... this one... yep
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB_LrDmZBwA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB_LrDmZBwA)
And
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNQUp9ju4VY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNQUp9ju4VY)
This is the only car on the earth I'd consider selling my truck for. period. 01 or 02. sunset metallic, or black, must be SS. period.
Am I stupid? am I doing wrong? What do you guys think? I know this is a squarebody site, and im thinking of getting rid of my square... but besides the obvious conflict of interests... what doi you guys think? at minimum I got to put $5k into the truck... minimum.
Or get my camaro i've wanted since i was 21... badly i might add. but i had a kid.. ya know... no chance. i have a huge chance now, and lots of em are brand new 02 cars... i want one so bad, but i dont know if i want it bad enough to part with my truck, and i think ill have to part with my truck to makew it happen... this is unpleasant to say the least, but i need your guys' help...
Do i keep the truck get another crappy car, or sell it all off, and get the car ive coveted for over 12-14 years now... I dunno.
Thanks fellas,
Kenny

Doesn't help but my dads cousin has a 97 camaro pushing we guess over 500hp... but its an auto... but maybe thats pushing me along...
I loved that car so much back in the day I went and test drove em new at every dealer in 50 miles from my house... make em think im rich, then they let me hot rod it... get back n im like umm i dunno ill give ya a call... Love that ls1 5.7 with 6 speed. never tried an auto, thats kind of blasphemy to me...

Respectfully, Kenny, wasn't that your Granddad's truck? What occurred?
What changed in your livelihood that you no longer need a hauler?
Look around and see where you are. Where do you see yourself in, say... five to ten years?
Doing what?
Cars and such are just stuff. What will this particular 'stuff' do for you? How will it impact your future or otherwise help you attain your goals? Have you defined your goals? What do you want to have? What would you need to do in order to have that? What would you have to be in order to do, so you could have what you want? How the Camaro fits in with your responses should help provide your answer.

the camaro isnt a family car, your a family man now. this is why i got my 2nd impala after crashing the 1st. its a 4 door family car and its supercharged for my "need for speed" side. im happy with a 300hp car(only 250 for now) and a 400tq truck. but thats just me. i dont think 500hp as a dd would really be that fun, weekends yes but back and forth to work? you would be working just to fill her up
-
Why spend extra for a low mileage if you're gonna DD it and rack the miles up?
How it was cared for is more important than miles
But Irish has a point. If you got chill'rins. A 2 door vehicle is not real useful Especially if it's your only vehicle
Not bad if it's a weekend toy
If you need a fast family hauler you could get a AWD Astro van with a V-8 conversion
-
If it were me I would try to find a way to keep the truck and obtain the Camaro of your dreams. One will pop up, eventually... It took me 3 years of searching for my extended cab. The novelty has worn off and it is on the market. My 85 C20 is just waiting to be finished which I will never sell. Luckily my DD is a company car and the family car is adequate that my wife motors around. Your history with your truck is memories and when it goes you may want to find it like your first white one. The one I'd like to have back was stolen but my white 85 way my uncles and I will never sell. My $.02
-
Keep the truck, buy a 100K 02 comaro, strip it down and rebuild it the way you want save $$$$ :>
-
GM made 13,095 Camaro SS 6 speed coupes between 2000-2002.
How many of Your Granfather's trucks did they make?
Sure, they made millions of 73-87's, but this is the 1 you gotta keep.

My livelihood changed cuz I fell off a house and hurt my back and most of my left side very badly. Enough I'll never do construction again... It is grandad's truck. I asked him what he thought about getting the camaro I want and he told me if i wanted to, sell it all and get it. he's not to attatched to things. Every man need a hauler, but I've actually used my truck for hard work so little, and I live in the house next to my dad who has a truck, so I'd always have one available if need be. I see myself being single like I am now. I had kids, it turned out perfectly horrible for me, no matter how i tried or how much money i threw at it... Other than my parents and ONE really good friend I've known for 19 years, who I'd trust with my life, I'm alone in the world. But I don't feel alone. I think I have what I need. I'm okay with how things are now, not looking to impress people... only myself :)

I lost my family man, other than my parents... I took up with the wrong girl, and my kid's worse than either of us ever dreamed of being... and we weren't easy to handle children... Guess I'm kinda in that Won't need a four door and don't want one place. ya know the dads who tried but got wrung out anyway... If I get the car it'll be insured under stated value, like my truck is now. I'm happy with my truck the way it is, but if I have a car it better be bad as heck... I grew up around a whole neighborhood of hot rodders with mustangs camaros n vettes... cars should kick butt.
And i work like heck to fill my truck up now, always have, camaro will be cheaper.

Basically that is I wanted one NEW SO BADLY. I'd like to have it new as I can. "Id Like to" and they got cheaper since they started making camaros again...
I have no chillins, but when we did, I had a 77 C10 and She had a 91 Camaro. it's doable... not the easiest thing, but we had a camaro and a truck... its doable... pita sometimes, but that's ok to me.
I just don't have a family as such. haven't seen my kid in two years. I did all I could, paid all i could. kicked in over $65k one year... wasnt enough... went bad enough i told them to go and leave me alone forever. hate me if ya will but i gave the ol college try for 15 years. so it's just me, and whatever girlfriend i have at the time. Got a house, got a tractor, got a van car n truck... gonna keep the house n tractor... want a bad car.

I'm hoping to do that. thats the best case scenario... I think I may the way prices are looking... itll take a long time for the novelty to wear off that camaro... Ive had several close to that cars... 350hp 176mph... novelty never wore off... and i think those camaros are so pretty, with a V8 Growl, and a manual... Trucks the only hiccup in the process. I can see selling it, but not being without it, ya know? grandad told me to basically follow my dreams and get rid of it (as he put it) He told me if i sell it tho i have to give him a hot rod ride in whatever i buy.
Keep the truck, buy a 100K 02 comaro, strip it down and rebuild it the way you want save $$$$ :>
I've been thinking about that. theres one out there for $11k with wind damage thats not too bad. maybe get it and put $3k into paint n rims... oh it has 7K seven thousand on it

They made two. first got scrapped cuz i pissed my mom off... the 62. the 78 i got to get just right.
I had decided there's no way, except HE is 95 now and told me to go ahead n get rid of it and get the camaro, but i better give him a ride in it. That's screwin with me a lot. he means it. i have no doubt.
Keep em comin guys. I'm at some sorta crossroads. I dont have family to worry with, so I can do what I want, unfortunately... But it is what it is. never comin again, I wanna have some fun. If I can get my butt hauler and keep my load hauler i wanna, but I been letting go of so much, frankly, a trucks small potatoes to what else I've had to let go of.
Just think of this as thinking out loud. nothings in stone, ever... I want your opinions. I value them, and they help me, so keep on with em. :)

It sounds like you'll be happy with whatever decision you make. It's just gettin there. So, don't over-rationalize it. The only wrong thing to do is "nothing!" Go with your gut. You can always change your mind later and do something different. Work out the details to create your best scenario and go for it.

I either get my to keep my truck and get a camaro, or get a badder camaro. I can always get a square again. Like everybody else I'd rather have a light hot rod C10... my truck will never be that weighing 5300lbs.
I dunno. I'm not talked into anything yet. ot out of anything yet.
I just grew up around hot hot hot cars, and had a couple of scary bad cars... i want another one. I know how to handle em better than most, im no pro, but i aint wrecked yet... Drove 500hp, drove 196mph. i jes cant see the ol truck doin that... dont know if I'd want to... HA HA HA
God i want that car tho... all I'm asking you guys is basically with all i've said, am I being stupid? If you don't tell me the truth and sugar coat it i'll take offense, not if you bluntly tell me your opinion... that'll only make me respect you.
I am BLUNT on things like this, hope yall can be too. I respect bluntness, not cruelty... ya know...

I did this when we got rid of the 69 mustang... painful sting.
I did this when i got rid of my 77 c10... painful sting. got my focus tho, and it is the best car i ever had. dont regret it, but when we left the car lot in my new focus, and i saw my truck fading in the rearview, i felt as tho i had left a good dog at the pound to be killed. im sentimental. maybe if i do it now and grandad likes the new car it'll all be okay.
-
Somethin like this...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqjW8Ko2M5c (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqjW8Ko2M5c)
I miss that... grew up with stuff far badder than that. like 8 second cars n such... but street driven... i know i know... but we used to could do that... my dad scared me as a child more in the car than on his motorcycle... lmao
I wouldn't wanna get outa third or fourth tops in my truck... my truck gets scary above 90... so it never goes 90... I went 115 once. never again...
I don't know if this is a life test to let go of stuff or not. If i could let go of my truck and let anyone else on the earth touch it, I can let go of anything.
I dunno, ya know... eh

When I feel "compelled" to purchase something I really want - something I can't get my attention off of - something I agonize over and think about constantly, but procrastinate on acquiring... I usually discover that not purchasing the item was the right thing to do. When a purchase is logical and logistically realistic for me, I have no hesitation, no second guessing, and no regret. Life is good.
If you're sentimental, parting with your granddad's truck, now, might bring some regret down the road. You can always get another truck, but will you always be able to recover your granddad's truck and the memories it represents? It strikes me that you need to be comfortable with this specific point not to have latent regrets.
Would it be possible for you to take your granddad with you once you've narrowed it down some, and include him in a test drive for some feedback before you lay out any cash - watch the expression on his face for clues?
-
yeah granddad may be ok with it or so he says, he seams like the type to sacrifice everything to make someone close to him happy. but once hes gone you will want your truck back. there's plenty of songs out there about a brother driving his brothers truck or a son driving a truck that has his and his dads memory.
i think most of the younger people on here me included love these trucks because its what we grew up with. i went out and bought a strangers truck cause it was the closest i could have to my memory. you have your grandfathers truck there's no closer than that. its kind of like my wifes 94 1500. its only 2wd it only has a v6 but it was her first truck a birthday gift from her parents. and i plan on fixing it up here soon but not till im dont with my crew cab. but that truck is something i dont see her parting with nor will i let her
-
So your looking for honesty?
I think you will regret selling it.
A while back you posted a thread looking for info on how to find your old 77 so you could buy it back. You didn't want any 77, you wanted Your 77. Completely understandable.
I just think with the family history of your 78, if you sell it, you will regret it.
-
I would think so as well but you need to do what makes you happy. That vintage Camaro is probably my least favorite so obviously our opinions are greatly different. I have looked and always kept my eyes open for my first C-10 often wondering where it ended up and if it's still out there somewhere.

By the time of the test drive truck would be gone...

No If he says he's fine with it, he's fine with it, he'll tell you what he thinks, no matter who likes it or what... even if it gets ugly, he'll be like so, i think this...
This truck is special to me, but my first one was his too, his old '62 C10. Just to keep this C20 I have to drop $5k into it minimum, to make it new but as it is now... carbed three speed.
So your looking for honesty?
I think you will regret selling it.

I agree, but tho this is grandads truck, it wasn't my first ride ever like my 77 was. My 77 was my first tase of freedom, we went to beaches n parties n mudbogs n stuff in it when i was 16... no vehicle ever can compare to my old beatup 77... no matter how nice it is... ss camaro isn't crap compared to that old beater truck... ya know relatively speaking...
I would think so as well but you need to do what makes you happy. That vintage Camaro is probably my least favorite so obviously our opinions are greatly different. I have looked and always kept my eyes open for my first C-10 often wondering where it ended up and if it's still out there somewhere.
Well that's okay, i value your opinon my friend! You think that and I think that, still wanna know what yall think... I think if my truck still exists, it'll be a $25k basket case... I don't know but i got the feeling it is...
But I always loved fast cars. I don't have to have the baddest thing in the world, just something makes me smile daily. I quit on my old 77 cuz if i found it, i'd likely be enraged po'd somebody let it get to this state, or it'd be redone up to a place i don't wanna pay for it...
-
I don't even know if i'll get that car or not. may keep the truck and get a nice tiller for the tractor and a new pulverizer... never know. im mulling things over, may be months before i decide, i certainly cannot just right now. thinkin too hard... thats the smoke ya smellin :)
-
Any chance that I can convince you to put an LS1 6 speed into your 78?
It will be the best of both worlds.
-
Do it get the camaro, put a couple grand into it and be happy for a little. yeah you pay 14-15k for a 13-14 year old car. but heck you can spend half of that and get your truck looking and running just as good. plus you still have your truck
-
I'll give you my take for what little its worth. Now I'm new to this site, but I've been around cars, working on em, rebuilding em, since my first ever car was hit/totalled in an accident back in the 90s and I learned to work on it after buying it back for $200 from the insurance company. Since then I've owned somewhere north of 80-90 cars and trucks over the years. Made a list that was in the upper 70s about 5 years ago and its only gone up since then.
As concerns the camaro: Prices are down, but, I think you will see them fall a bit further yet to come. Lots of people were hoarding these cars when it looked like the end of the production run, wondering if they would ever come back. there are still TONS of them that are garage queens, ultra low mileage, still sitting in someone's garage driving once a week, once a month, or even just a few times a year that aren't for sale right now. I don't think it is a do or die situation for you, that if you don't get one now, you won't find one or they wont exist anymore. As much as you like it, and it was a popular style, I think the demand side of things is not going to keep as strong as the supply as more people decide to let them go.
Look at the new car trends... for 17k you can buy a brand new 305hp mustang, and a couple grand more gets you a similar camaro or challenger. What seemed like a ton of horsepower in 2002 doesn't stack up to what they build now, technology got that much further. Not saying its not an awesome car (I think it is) but your average thrill seeker who doesn't have a particular attachment to that year/make/model that you do will not be pushing its desirability going forwards is all.
In fact, I'd compare that car somewhat to the Buick Grand Nationals of the 80s, which I am very familiar with and still follow. End of an era, end of body style, best styling and performance of its time, so on so forth. Prices on those are creeping back up now, but went way down from where they were as a 14 year old car when they became 24 years old...
As the demand for them as a performance car goes down due to newer more powerful cars at a similar price, I think you still have time to get the car, and it wont be do or die.
On the other side of things: I'm obviously not as familiar with your truck as others here, don't have a clue what you put into it or what its worth. For my $.02 the avatar picture looks pretty sweet. BUT, even if we put aside the "it was my grandfather's" bit for a second, good clean 70s squares are getting harder to find. They built millions so its not impossible, but, they are harder than they used to be if you want no rust, and you don't want to basically build a truck from nothing. A good solid truck that hasn't been worked to death, well.... those are probably a little harder to buy off the shelf in nice shape than a camaro. You will always be able to build one, true.
But if you sell it you will miss it. you will be back eventually and you will be wanting another. so the real question is, for the amount you expect to get out of the truck, isn't it better to let it sit, use it as is, and save up that extra bit of cash? Sell the other stuff if you want to, but make up the truck value somewhere else?
-
Main problem is i can't find ANY CAR OR TRUCK I like, at all... newer than 2008 or so. I refuse to buy anything new GM just because of how they screwed me on my impala... so whatever it is it cannot and will not be GM. Gubmint shouldnt have let them keep the words general or motors when they regrouped. so no more gm for me ever... but my truck isn't gm anymore, ive done so much to it and my way, other than the stampings, its kenny built.
Ive been all over the place as far as what to buy, but there's no hurry, but i will have my truck. thanks for your input fellas, i'm going to keep it, in any case.
Pretty much decided, whatever I do I just cannot and will not part with my truck. I just can't do it...
Have been looking at this though... matches my truck pretty well...
http://www.victorymotorcycles.com/en-us/cruisers/gunner-titanium-metallic (http://www.victorymotorcycles.com/en-us/cruisers/gunner-titanium-metallic)
I can't get rid of the truck... I got close and no no no .... eh eh aint happenin son...
So besides that car and van are going soon as they sell...
Either a bike or a sporty car to haul booty in.
-
So trucks safe, ima keep it, just gotta find out what i wanna do with the cash bump. have no idea.
-
Glad to hear your keeping it.

What about a 3rd gen Camaro Kenny?
-
What about a 3rd gen Camaro Kenny?
I used to have a 91 RS.
But really I'd like a 69 only mustang (prices are stupid) or a 94 ford probe (if i can find one with decent interior) or 01-02 camaro, if i can find one they don't want the moon for.
Been looking recently at 94-96 Broncos. I used to love that body style and grille... I'd either have a 94-96 Bronco, or a 78 blazer... no fudging on years for the blazer. 78 or nothing.
Also been looking at 2005-09 Jag XJ8s. Vanden Plas. or sport
Maybe a V8 Ford Focus...
Gen III camaro, I love the look and style, And I'm in a non emission place, so i could do what i want with it but the interior is quite dated... though that doesnt preclude it... they are sweet cars, and I'd love to have one built to my specs

Reason I ask is I know of a really nice one with 41K miles 2 owner. Moves really good without being to radical. It is an automatic though but original #'s matching 305 stroked. I know the guy who built it up and owns it. PM me if you like all the specs with pictures.
-
saw a white bronco with a vanity tag that said "NOT OJ"
-
Get a Dodge Charger. Absolutely love mine. Even the 06 - 2010 3.5 H.O. V6's are fun to drive.
The 2011 and up have the 8 speed trans which is great on gas. Plus there is a lot you can do to modify them if you want.
-
From your comments. You like to drive fast. Sounds like you need a car to use on a track
Road race. Gymkhana Etc
Go as fast as you can. Don't have to worry bout the cops
-
Maybe I can help, I own an 83 K10, an 00 Camaro, and a motorcycle. In my opinion, find a way to keep the truck and get the Camaro. If you have to go for a slightly higher mileage one, understand that these cars are not like the newer stuff that falls apart at 100k miles. Mine is the v6 but still very similar, I bought mine at 60k and it now has 106k on it. The only things beyond standard maintenance brakes and tires that's needed done is a fuel pump and Fuel Pressure Regulator.
Sunset Orange Metallic is a beautiful color, but not the same as it looks like in those videos, so I hope you've seen it in person. I love my Camaro, but it doesn't fit all my life. It's a fun car, I thoroughly enjoy driving it. It may have 4 seats, but it's not comfortable for more than 2 people. A fishing pole or a rifle, don't count on it. Now, I've hauled some ridiculous stuff in my camaro (small tree, garden tools, full length mirror, 40" TV) but it's not made for it.
Someday, I'll either own a 68-69 Camaro, or an 00-02 Camaro w/ LS1 & T56. Or maybe I'll just put and LS1 & T56 in the body I've got now. Point is, I wouldn't worry about something with even 50-60k miles, just look the suspension over real good.
Feel free to ask any questions.
-
Biggest thing you want to avoid is getting one from a seller who has run it hard and driven it fast
The fastest car for the least money is a V-8 Fiero
My brother has a 88 GT with a 4.9 Cadillac engine in it and it is way faster than his corvette
Handles better too
He sold the vette and kept the fiero
The 88 fiero was a totally redesigned new generation car that looks like the 84-87 but shares hardly any parts

I did see sunset orange and black in test drives i did... when they were new, i had to wear my nice pants n leather jacket, i test drove a LOT of six speeds, never tested an auto, i wouldnt bother...
So I want black or SSO or Red is always good.
'm kinda onto now... Id forgotten these... a Mercury Marauder... Those and Impalas ss's, the last rwd one anyway, both look good but i like the ford styling way way better.
So Im hunting a black marauder. or a sunset orange camaro. camaro must be manual. marauder can be auto, but if it is ill swap a manual into it later...

Forget everything I said before this today...
I'm getting a jaguar XJ8 or XJR oe Vanden Plas...
One nearby is gray and matches my truck....
Whatever you say, I'm impressed by this automobile...
I need it in my life...
60k, gray inside n out, a few blemishes, that i can fix in 2 hours or less and you'd never know they existed...
Wow this car made me fall in love instantly... and its the only car doesnt make my left knee sing in agony. even my truck can't claim that one.
I will have a jaguar XJ, 2004-2009 or i wont buy anything.
Wow... I drove a 300hp version, then the 400hp version...
either car is impressive, and wow
I went and test drove two of em, ummm. impala n van are gone ASAP. i always loved jags... these are the last of the real jags to me... people call them dated and old skool... wel so are 57 chevies.. if i can have an old car looking ride with 2008 tech... win win
old jags are classy and comfy and lite n quick... so if i get the car ill have a full size car, with a 300hp v8 weighs 3700 lbs gets 28-30mpg on hwy... why the heck wouldnt i go for this? I don't know so im going for it...
I want the jag ive always wanted since i was small. didnt help neighbor had a V12 XJS when i was small... he was the same guy built the '57 454 vette when i was like 8...hahahaha

The only problem with an older Jag today is the same problem they had when they were building the xj v12s in the late 80s... they love the garage, and I don't mean for storage. A partner where I work had one. He loved it, and it was FAST. Only problem is, it was in the garage every other month for some ridiculously overpriced part or another, and eventually he got sick of it and got a new Caddy SUV... I think his was around 70-80k miles when he gave up on it.
I'm not gonna say don't do it, but, look at parts prices and walk into it with open eyes

I can deal with most of what Comes along... Ive been on a jag x350 site for a year or two to find the problems, seems the air shocks are the worst $$$ cost. and id be fixing it myself, and have my truck to drive while i do that. taking it to the shop is a long wait, in the best of times, I can get the parts i need quick as usual, so im not scared.
Would love to have a jag to match my truck.
looked just like this
