Hello
I am starting my build and would like opions good and bad
What i have is a 85 c20 crew cab 454 th400
I have a 78 chevy 4x4 as a donor truck to use all the brackets and steering
Yes i know it would make more sence to swap the body to a 4x4 running gear
But keep in mind i am in minnesota so finding a nice rust free frame is very hard and costly
And my c20 frame is very nice and everything works
I am a welder and have built many trucks and frames i truck pulled for 9yrs and built my own trucks
So i enjoy fab work and customizing
When its all said and done i hope to have a
85 4x4 short box crew cab 4" lift 33's
Here is were i am stuck motor and tranny set up
I have a rebuilt 700r4 with pass side tcase and a tbi 350
I also have a 350 vortec with a 480le in a 99 suburban
Or use my current 454 thats in the truck thats only got 45 k on it
With a th400 and np205 or a sm465 with a 205
I do want power thats kinda my thing i also like to build motors
But haveing overdrive would be nice
So plz give me your thoughts and a motor and tranny set up
And yes a 12v cummins is also on my mind but that is a spendy deal and i dont feel i would benift for it but i am open to everything
Yes i have pics and will post them tomorro
Thanks

Welcome, I would say go with the vortec and 4L80E trans set up, sell your 454 to pay for some of the swap.
-
ok heres my deal, im putting a crew cab together also so i dont some research. i have a 12v 4l60(that needs replacing) and 1 ton running gear. so i want a 4l80e/205. so now the details you have a 78 which would have 205 race track and short input. you need a 4l80e 2wd. there are a couple 2wd output shaft on the 4l80 if its a slip yoke it should be the 6" all splines that you need if its a bolt on yoke you cant use it. theres a spacer that advance adapter makes that all you need to do is get it and bolt a 205 off a th400. you can also cut about 1" off the tail shaft and make it work. i can give you the info if you decide to go those routs.

with the 4l80e you need a tcu. i have one off a 91-93 chevy 6.5 (these are the only years with non electronic engines and electronic trans) i also have one from tci. you need TPS signal, Output Shaft speed(electric speed sensor), Tachometer signal, 12v+, and a ground. if you use the 205 you can use the dakota digital sells a 8k pulse generator (http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=620/prd620.htm) there are others out there but this is the one i have and am using.
tps

again you can find them cheaper

-
Nevermind i found it i am useing my phone untill we get a good internet out here in the sticks
-
lol no it was hidden till you reach 3 post
-
O ok lol i thought maybe i needed new glasses

welcome! I have some steering input for you. For your front steering I would keep the 2wd steering box and use a crossover steering setup. As you put lift in a 4x4 (depending on how much) if you keep a 4x4 steering box which moves the pitman arm front to rear as opposed to a 2wd steering box which goes left to right on the 4wd steering box as the drivers tires articulates downwards it (eats up ) the lenght of the drag link. In a worst case scenario the drivers side tire could be drooped way down and you would have little to no steering range. Hands down the crossover setup it much better geometry and feel however more expense.

That sounds like a good idea any idea on the cost of doing that and what i all need
-
Ord Design also check out a rear shackle flip kit. Depending on your fab abilty you may be able to make some off the parts yourself
-
I just checked out ord site it looks like i can build most of it
My buddy runs a lazer were we work and i will buy what i cant make
Looks like a straight forward conversion
I was thinkinf about the rear schackle flip i am gonna look into that
I wanna stay away from blocks or keep the blocks as small as possible
I used 6" blocks on a ram charger yrs ago and i had issues
I gotta keep this truck safe my wife and kids love to take the beast out when i am at work
Yes my wife loves loud and big trucks i am lucky guy
Thanks for the great tips plz keep them comming

one problem with a shackle flip, you can see it a mile away. to me and my ocd i cant stand the rear tires not being centered
-
also research going to a longer ( I believe 56") front spring. Improved ride, articulation etc. With the amount of custom work your describing sliding the front / rearward spring mounts back a couple inches should be no big chore.
-
Good idea alot cheaper than a soft ride kit thanks i will do some seaching
-
Irish ,I'm not following the rear tires not centered? Are you saying left to right? I apologize I'm confused.
-
with a shackle flip you extends the rear shackle. since your front point never changes it pushes the axle down and forward.

looks something like this
