Title: floor hump
Post by: 76StepSd on June 15, 2014, 06:55:37 am
Pulled up the carpet on my 76 stepside C10 the previous owner had this carpet installed by someone anyway i noticed that the floor padding seemed to be installed over the original padding which was really crumbly and coming apart. Good thing i pulled it too because the moisture that was trapped caused some surface rust which i have to remove before deciding what carpet i will reinstall and how much carpet but my question is what is this bolted on plate that sits under the shifter? I am not really familiar with the how and why they did certain things on trucks but i am sure some of you know why this plate is there.

Was this truck a manual to begin with? Thats the access panel for the top loader 4 speed that was there originally.

It could have been that the transmission hump had rust before, the PO did I section instead of the whole hump.  You can tell that it is defiantly 2 different humps that were put together by what looks like a couple of spot welds no less.

Not saying it isn't possible but the truck came from Cali.....  Monterrey to be exact then to Vegas it's only been in Ohio the past 4 years the PO bought it when he retired from the marines. Before it came to Ohio in 2010 it sat since 2004

I live near Sac Ca.  Monterrey is close to salt water, depends on what the rest of the truck looks like though, the hump would not rust by itself, that is unlikely.
From your pics it defiantly looks like there are 2 different pieces there for whatever reason.  Is there a hole under the shifter ?  Maybe it was a standard like LeftysRodandCustom said and someone replace with a automatic.  Whatever the reason, I do not get the partial hump replacement instead of the whole hump replacement.

Rest of truck is solid only rust on floor from moisture laden padding and a spot behind door cutout from jack knifing with a trailer

Will take a picture of floor underneath pretty sure it's solid but will see

I think I got it now .......the truck was initially a 3 on the tree....so it was a manual but after lookin underneath that plate is covering a whole where. A floor shifter would go

The four bolts are the mounts for the B&M the PO had installed

That is an aftermarket shifter mount.  All trucks were column shifted for autos.
