Title: Steering Column Length
Post by: hobbz on June 20, 2014, 07:50:18 pm
I am going to replace my column shift steering column with a floor shift one because I am going with a full manual valve body and want the race feel.  I am going to get a universal one from summit, and want it to be a little shorter than the stock one.  They have 28, 30, and 32 inch columns...  What size is stock in my 87?

33.5" is bare column not counting the shaft sticking out either end that the intermediate shaft slides on to under the hood and the steering wheel slides on by the key switch, then it is close to 37"

Huh?

If you're gonna use a floor shifter. What difference does it make ?

You looking at replacing the entire steering Collum ?

Or are you asking how tall of a shifter sticking out of the floor ?

I'm replacing the entire steering column.  The 33.5 is what is am looking for. I will probably go with a 30" replacement.

I plan on using an aftermarket steering wheel too that is 2" smaller than stock.

i dont know what your looking for but you will notice a difference with just a steering wheel swap. it might be all your looking for. i would try that first since you plan on it anyway

Guys, What I believe he is saying is: He wants to get rid of the shifter on the column, he doesn't want the nub left on the original column so to make the swap finished looking to a floor shift, he wants to replace the column to one without the nub, ect. While doing so, instead of getting one from an original floorshift manual trans. truck he would like to get one a couple inches shorter (closer to the gauge cluster). The train got de-railed after Zieg produced the measurement & the rest is history. Is this correct Hobbs?
Hobbs, My advice before you order a column is to be sure the 33 1/2" measurement of just the "housing" is the same way the aftermarket company figures the measurements so you are comparing apples to apples. Good Luck, Lorne

Guys apparently the train is our suggestions, and since we cant read minds the best thing for this train to do is stay at the station or else
