Title: Rare maybe?
Post by: manualburb on July 09, 2014, 01:17:28 am
So this is my second 1990 Suburban. The first was a 1/2 ton auto and I liked it but now an automatic transmission fan. So I found, and purchased a 1990 factory 3/4 ton with a tbi 350 and a granny four speed. I have seen a couple 1/2 tons with a manual but never a 3/4. So my question is, This suburban is bare bones, two vinyl bench seats manual windows ect...... Was this a special factory order or perhaps a government Vehicle??????? thank you

I've only seen a handful of manual transmission Suburbans.  The last one was an 85 or 86, 3/4 ton, 4x4 that was previously used by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Besides government use, it's possible the 'Burb you have could've been a fleet truck for an engineering company/survey crew or similar.

Anyway, a TBI 3/4 ton 4-speed Suburban sounds pretty neat. Have you posted any other photos?

I found it at a dealership and had to have it. It has a few small issues for from sitting for an extended period. but nothing major it runs and drives fantastic. It just turned 102k.

Nice looking, more than likely it was ordered with the manual transmission because someone wanted a manual instead of a automatic.  But I would venture to say that not too many of them were made that way.

It would be rare to have a manual suburban, now what that really means depends.  It would be like ordering a new car now in Texas with no AC, and later trying to sell it as "rare".
It would be more along the lines of undesirable.

I just prefer manual transmissions, always have always will. They don't break or " go out " nearly as often in my opinion. I was super excited when i found a TBI Burb with a factory four speed. I get your analogy and it's funny because on the Oregon Coast we see 80 degrees a handful of times in the summer. I don't think Ive ever owned a rig with working AC. Thanks guys.

I hate autos.  Everything I would own would have one If it was up to me.

I second that.  2 of my trucks are manual and seriously considering converting my extended cab into a manual...

I don't know, but I'd love to swap my suburban to a granny 4-speed!

76' 3/4 Ton K25 GMC 3 spd manual w/granny low checking in

Just cleaned up the front steering linkage ;) Original grill going back in after core support gets painted.

Curious to know, can anyone post a link to a page that goes through upgrading the AC compressor from the log style to Sanden? And yes the marker light is fixed.... fender got messed up the first time I took it out and has since been repaired, she's a street princess now.
