"1985 chevy 2 wheel drive 350 motor 400 turbo trans inspected runs an drives need some minor tlc 1800 obo"
as soon as i texted him he said first 12 takes it. it has a hole in a cab corner and its 2500 4x2. but frame is good and body is fair. inside is a little different have pics on my phone will upload them in a bit. has two good bench seats new dash and thats about it needs carpet and door panels "were' electric now manual with holes all messed up and hes 2 hrs away so it would need new panels cab corner 4x4 1ton frame and insides.
next on the list
1991 r3500

1991 chevy r3500. This is a virtually rust free OLD body style crew cab dually. 53,000 original miles 454 truck with blue interior. No rips or tears manual windows & locks. Dual 20 gallon fuel tanks. Has 4l80-4 speed automatic transmission. Dana 70 posi-traction rear. I bought to do a 4x4 swap but just don't have the time. Truck has a rusty frame but near perfect body. New cooper discoverer tires on truck. Clear title. Update: I now have a complete 4x4 truck 1 ton running gear to go with. Will not desperate.all for $3000 CASH no paypal no trade no bs
one cab corner needs to be replaced frame is rusted out. insides are good. has a 454 and another 4l80e. so i would need a 4x4 frame or 1 ton (same as other truck) new cab corner and has a couple rust spots on the bed behind the dually fender.
now the 85 is read to go. i could drop my cummins into her and have a 2wd crew but its not what i want in the end.
the 91 isnt road worth would need the frame (found one 3500 crew 4x4 with cab and bed but they are too gone thats near the 85 crew cab 2hrs) and is 4 hrs away one trip and it would be a two trip job just for the 91.
kind of torn i think i also have pictures of the 91 insides and they look pretty good. the 85 would be cheapest and can drive it home. but i would have to fix the insides and looks like a fender someone give me some pointers maybe a slap or two
-
Just from what you said, the 85 you could get home and fix what needs to be fixed for the price of the 91 and it is not road worthy.
How much do you think you would have to spend on a 4x4 frame for the 85 ? Maybe you could have 1 shipped into you.
-
found that one its off a 76 for 1k. either way im going to have to get a rolling chassis.
"Lifted crew cab 4x4 chevy. 350 auto cab and bed are shot but no bad frame rust runs great"
i could use my 84 k30 axles but even though the 84 is beat to heck its still 30 years old like me so i want to try and keep that thing around just to have it. feels like its part of me. so my plan was to get the 85 bring her home. put the cummins in her with the th400 thats in it and take her back up to get the 76 its about 2.5 hrs away
(http://images.craigslist.org/00f0f_jY6XHPC4Ga6_600x450.jpg)

it also might have some good insides. the 85 has vinyl seats i kind of wanted the fabric ones but dont want to keep putting more and more into it.

I like this one, if it is doable I would say build this one.
-
Could you use a suburban or quad dually rolling chassis ?
-
the 1 ton 4x4 with the cap on it is rusted out bed and cab. the guy said besides the rust the insides are good. so im thinking getting a ride to the 85 and drive it home.
turns out i misunderstood the guy the cab corners are fine its the floor that has the hole

tell you the truth i dont know what im waiting for i should leave next couple days to pick the 85 up its in much better condition (outside) than the 91.
-
On the 91 crew cab, does the frame have surface rust, or is it rusted through?
-
pretty sure he said it was rusted through. now i got to wait till monday to get ahold of the dmv to see about getting a t tag to go get the 85. and if anything has to be notarized
-
OK took today to go on a road trip 2.5 hrs. Only 1 hour from my house i smell this sweet smell in look down im runnin aboit 200° norm aboit 170° and the gauge is slowly creeping up. Get off the next off ramp and me being a white country boy I didn't quite fit in this ghetto and I was nervous. Walked into a shoe store and asked if there was a parts store near. They both blew me off saying they weren't from here so I get on my map app on my phone and auto zone is a block away. I drive there cause I wasn't too hot yet and fix my hose and back on the road.
to the 85 only to find she's a little gone for me. The cab cross members where cut so they could get a wrench on the nuts that broke loose. They didn't have much to cut cause they where pretty much rusted out. There's rust all up the door jambs . so I drove 1.5 he's another direction to see the 1 ton only to find out it has a Dana 44 up front. The drivers side door about fell off the one hinge that wasn't rusted off. Lol so 10 hrs on the road and came back with my money.
PS to the women driving the red Pontiac grand am when someone puts there turn signal on to get over and you decide to speed up there's no reason to get ticked at me when I slip in front of you. She proceed to give me one finger so I waved at her like I was happy to see her and knew her

so the search continues
found this 73 the original price a couple days ago was 5k now its only 3k

-
Well the husband came home last night. Got there address and figured it would be a 2.5 hr trip. Made a time frame between 12-1 so I left about 930. Got 45 minutes from their house and thought I should let them know how far away I was. But didn't the 15 minutes later I get a text from the wife saying it sold. I said lol I'm 30 minutes out why would you schedule two people to come look at it at the same time. She said thy thought he was me till after he signed the title. She said thanks for coming early. He said what do you mean I just stopped by
-
That looks like a clean truck for 3K. Hopefully you can find another one soon.
-
yeah deep in my mind i think it was one of those craigs list scams seamed too good. but im still kicking myself for not texting her letting her know i was right down the road.

Both rockers have holes I have new rockers for it I haven't put on yet Doors don't have any holes but on the inside seam the could use wire brushed and resealed. Typical chevy rust I think the passenger floor pan has a small hole but I never lifted the carpet I was gonna patch it when I did the rockers.
Guys asking 1700. Asked if firm he said yes drivetrain is worth that
Has a 454 and th400, might go in my 94.
-
idk what im doing i think im putting the price of the crew cab real low. then people will try and sell rusted crews for twice as much as i see them. the one above the guy would budge off his price so i didnt look at it. so i found another but this one says "make offer"

That just means they have no idea what it is worth either.

I'd go and kick the tires, pick it apart and offer $500 for it. You'd be surprised how that would clean up after a good bath and a wax...

thats kind of what im thinking. got a hold them this evening should be looking at it tomorrow.
this is how i got the 99 dump truck for $600. i pulled the dipstick and smelt it. the truck hasnt ran in a good bit, i then said "i dont like the smell of the fluid. i would give you core value of it" he ask whats that i said $200 he wanted i think 1k. then i just let him lower the price by himself then i waled away and called him back a hour later.
think ill pull the same deal cause truthfully dont know what condition the motor or trans is in. but i dont need them but i wont let them know ill talk about rebuilding it and how much that will cost then give them some puppy dog eyes
-
well looked at the truck today. i was surprised at the rust, as you can see the passengers side cab corner is rusted and so is the drivers but thats about it. the bed has its rust as you can see but the passenger side is dented up the bumper is a little bent.
its been sitting at least since 2004, and its a open lot in baltimore with trees and a house around it. but its baltimore i wouldnt say the ghetto (i get scared when i go to the ghetto lol) but it was a step above it. the drivers side windows were busted out. the seats are trashed the glove box is missing. of course no battery. the guy said he has the title but he couldnt make it out there thinking he was at the Baltimore 36 -Steelers 6 game. looks like a good cab besides the rockers the bed prob will be replaced, was hoping to make it a short bed anyway.
couldnt get under the truck because i was wearing shorts and got attacked by mosquitoes. with the first minute i got there i was covered by them must of been 20+ on my legs. so hopefully tomorrow i can talk to him and get a good deal on the truck.
it also has a 350tbi probably th400 trans
-
Well the guy he'll take 700. Last night I told the wife if I can't get it for under 7 I wouldn't buy it. So now I think 700 is fair but still want to get it lower lol
-
so i offered him 6 and he said. "yes, not a penny less" but now my heart is playing with me and i want to give him 7 lol. think hes out of work due to a recent surgery for cyst on his lower spine so i think hes hard up for cash. he said he parked it years ago because it was too big for the city and no parking for it.

Found some doors off a suburban guy wants 75 a pop but they are electric the only problem is one door got a little beat up. (http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m387/rebel_cowboy_83/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-09/IMG_20140913_175359044_zpsl1pnmnla.jpg) (http://s333.photobucket.com/user/rebel_cowboy_83/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-09/IMG_20140913_175359044_zpsl1pnmnla.jpg.html)

So three questions never priced doors is that a fair price and is this door fixable? Or how had is it to convert a manual door to electric with a donor door?
-
You have quite the collection of crews to choose from. I like the '73 crew cab converted to dually. At least it looks that way with the non fendered bed and dana 44 big hub steer axle with what looks to be maybe a spacer on the front hubs so the dually wheel doesn't hit the tie rod and perhaps caliper. It looks to have a ford lockout as well with the red dial.
As for your door question, the price does not sound bad but the dent is pretty bad, especially below those black lines that is a pretty good crease that looks like it would be a bear to get out. I think I would wait for some better doors you never know what might come up. I once found two GM NOS doors for $250.00. I thought it was a misprint and asked if that was for one and he said both so they are mine now. These are just my opinions. With enough love and elbow grease anything can be fixed. Usually. :)
-
most are gone now lol. but the 90 was the one i was going to get but the "clean title" is still in the originals owners name the seller now his name is filled out on the back. so i talked to mva today about this little problem the lady said he would have to register it before he sold it cause technically hes not the owner and you cant sell something if you're not the owner
-
There is always bunch of hoops to jump through on that stuff if it is not exactly perfect per the state. When I bought my '78 GMC the owner scratched out the date on the back of the title because I told him not to date it. If you date it in Illinois you have to register it in a certain amount of time. I should have just registered it the following week. I put in the date I thought would work but the state did not like the scratched out one. I had to send a form to him stating that he put in the wrong date, write the correct date sign it and return. To shorten the story I had to do this several times before we got it right. What a pain, especially when you just want to drive your truck. Keep up the updates.

think i found my new crew cab only 10k

its a 90 3500 4x4. if i can get this then i get to keep my 84, dont know why just got that 84 but im attached to it and want to keep it around. he looked over this truck it does have its rust spots like floor board and maybe rocker but he said hes not scared of it
-
Nice find. You could sell the lift gate if you get it to offset the price. Good Luck.
-
Well we get there. First thing I see is this(http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m387/rebel_cowboy_83/Chummins/IMG_20140920_124619305_zpsudzlplvp.jpg) (http://s333.photobucket.com/user/rebel_cowboy_83/media/Chummins/IMG_20140920_124619305_zpsudzlplvp.jpg.html)
She's a old air force crew cab. Then I saw the date 1991, looked underneath and my jaw dropped. 4l80e and 205. So figured this truck would touch 3k if not more cause of the lift. Ended up paying $1800. Then I saw a receipt from a fast food joint just 5 days old.
Ended up selling the dump bed off the 99 for $300 that's after we took the pump off so that worked out great.
-
very nice you stole it
-
That is crazy. I can't believe you got it for that. Very jealous.
-
im still kind of shocked at the price. i do feel guilty but its not like i ripped off anyone, no one wanted to bid
-
Nice find.
What does it have for a motor?
If its a 6.2 diesel, the 4L80 will have a stand alone computer in it.
This could make your Cummins swap a little easier.
-
na it has a 350 but i picked up a standalone off a 93 6.5. picked it up beginning of this year along with a tci unit. the tci is about 10 years old but its brand new but it comes with one of these things called "floppy disk" lmao didnt see it when i first got it only once i got home. i about crapped myself
-
for some reason also the truck has a block heater but it all looks factory with the 350, got to check out the vin. but did the military put heaters on everything?
-
No, I've owned 11 Military CUCV's (6.2 diesels). Only 2 of them had block heaters,. I'm guessing mine were installed by the police & fire departments that owned them before me.
-
Nice find id kill for a round patteren 205 so easy to do a nv4500 swapwith a round patteren
-
Do have another round 205 but they are hard to come by and I don't know what to use my 84 k30 for lol
-
Cant was to see your build thread
-
Neither can I lol. Have my little girl due next month so might wait for her before I rip the truck apart. But does anyone know why or if the airforce puts hitches on the front of trucks.
-
You are doing quite well Irish. ;D
-
Not sure if your front Hitch was installed by the Military or a prior owner.
Of the 11 Cucv's I've owned, 2 had a front hitches.
They were both on a M1009 Blazers.
1 truck was owned by a police department and had a Reese hitch, real nice set up.
The other truck had a hitch that the previous owner made himself, let's just say I hope his day job isn't working as a hitch maker.
-
don so far i have prob 6k rapped up into this crew cab cummins swap. now after that if i want to sell some extra stuff off i could recoup 1.5-2k in parts that i wont be using. but im probably looking at spending more want to take some modern day seats out of a crew cab or burb or tahoe. might have to make a road trip and visit some family that owns a junkyard. problem is i havent spoken to them in years and they're my wifes side. last time i was up there they gave me a bumper for a rental i crashed, when it cam time to pay for it he looks at me cause there was other customers around and says "ill tell you what, you take it home if it dont fit then you dont have to pay" and winks at me. really nice people wish i knew them better.
-
So took this crew cab thought inspection. It failed but not by much one tie rod is bad and I have a dashlight out along with the highbeam indicator and brake light
-
Also the charge is $60 for a inspection. Since I had full floating rear they charged an extra $30 for a half hour worth of work
-
That tie rod could be part of your death wobble problem, it was on my Dana 60.
Sounds like they do a thorough safety inspection. I'm glad to see that. I feel for the people that can't add performance parts to the motor due to emission regulations, but I'm all for strict safety inspections. I like to think we are all on top of the maintenance on our vehicles, but for a lot of people the yearly inspection is the only time anyone checks on the vehicle.
-
in maryland they tear the truck apart too them 2hrs on mine due to the full floater lol. but i know i never smelt gas before but thats all you can smell now around the drivers side tank. didnt notice any fuel being spilled out. so im driving on that tank right now just to empty it and drop it. but maybe tomorrow ill crawl under her and see what i can see. i know the selector valve is on the passengers side so maybe he (inspector) just pulled on the hose and it broke it, idk but more than likely it needed to be replaced if it was that brittle. in maryland the initial inspection is a good safety check but as long as you keep the vehicle on the road you dont have to get it reinspected ever.
so 20 years could go by and your truck could be falling apart and blowing smoke but your still good. as long as a cop doesn't give you an inspection ticket meaning you now have 30 days to get your vehicle to pass inspection. most time when kids cut their cats off and act a fool cops will just give them a inspection ticket. kind of makes the cops job easy and he still gets his point across.
i also could of just got historic tags for this truck then i would just go to MVA do the title work and get the tags $50 for 2 years. but your not supposed to drive it for commercial purposes or a dd. just to and from car shows or events. but like i been saying its a family vehicle so i knew if it had any safety problems the inspection should find them
-
Got the tie rod replaced and rigged up a steering stabilizer. Then got on the dash light problems, was able to get the all the dash light working but took the dash apart to try and get the high beam and brake light working to no luck. Then I put it back together and lost all dash lights. Found bd's write up about the dash lights but the brake and high beams idk
-
Found my problem for the dash lights was a broken ground on the printed circuit board. Fixed it my using a jumper from the ground prong on the pigtail to a light bulb ground in the dash.
Then I got the ideal about the brake light, that I could just jump some wires off the seat belt light. But when I was testing it I grounded out another lead on the dash caused some sparks but ended up loosing my gas, speedo and check engine light. Briefly checked a couple fuses with no luck. Which fuse is it? Or is there something else I'm missing?
-
Irish I bet something is NOT grounded. I ran into a similar problem with my 79 the other day. When we would try to start it sparks flew from alt bracket, negative cable end started smoking etc. Then it would not turn over. I mean nothing. I started pulling fuses. I could not find anything wrong with the fuses. I thought I had really blew it. I figured out what the problem was. I had placed the ground cable between two washers on the alternator bracket. I took it apart and removed the top washer. I put the battery on charger. I bought a new cable while the battery was charging. After hooking everything back up, I started it up. It was fine. I was very relieved.
My point is that it was something simple. I would check all grounds first. I will admit that I am not an electrical whiz either but that is my advice. ;D I wish you good luck.
PS-let me know if you want to sell some parts. I could make a road trip over to Maryland from WVA. ;D
-
Just started thinking about it. My rigging won't work for the brake indicator. Its still not getting a hot constant so when you use the emergency brake the light won't ground and light up
-
ok so i got everything to work again except the 2 second the brake light indicator lights up when you first turn the key over. its getting 12v so the e brake switch is good and the proportion valve both test good when grounded. so its just the initial key on thats getting to me.
-
The Ignition Switch grounds the Brake Indicator when
the Ignition Switch is turned to START to provide a quick
check of the Brake Indicator Bulb and circuitry.
where is this ground at?
-
So I got everything working except the brake light for the system check. Went to my 84 k30 it doesn't do the system check either. So I called the place I took it to talked to a guy think his name is Bob. Well he said if it was him doing the inspection he wouldn't of failed it cause of the test. He did say technically it has to work but as long as it works when the e brake is engaged he would be happy. So tomorrow I'm going to stop by and see what they say in person
-
Well she passed but the guy doing the inspection just had to point out my low beam headlight on the left side was upside down. I just started laughing and he then said your still good. Told him I would change it asap
-
had one of my uncles up from North Carolina. hes retired air force, and of course the truck caught his eye. but he didnt know it was mine till i asked him what it was used for. so he starts listing all the things it could of been. later on we got back to the house and he asked if i put the tommy gate on it. told him no, he then says it was probably an old EOD truck. we pop the hood and start looking over the stickers. found it odd that the 1 ton had cats but come to find out its a CA. truck so it had to have them. kind of makes it different once you find out what your truck did in its past.
-
Hey Irish,
I find it odd that the electrical system was 12 volts. All I have seen are 24 volts. But I am no expert on them, maybe just the starter was 24 volts? This way everything in the fleet could be jumped or charged with one unit to save our frugal ::) military system from having to spend money needlessly. Hahahahaha!
-
so even gas motors had 24v?
-
I thought so. Maybe not though. Things have changed pretty drastically over the years. I seem to remember someone telling me that 24v was a NATO spec so that may mean only vehicles used overseas were converted? The semis, heavy trucks, cranes, dozers and most diesel construction equipment I ever ran worked with a 24 start/ 12 run system. 12v lights and accessories are the most common at the Flying J. Volts just keep going up.

Neither can I lol. Have my little girl due next month so might wait for her before I rip the truck apart. But does anyone know why or if the airforce puts hitches on the front of trucks.
It's very handy for backing trailers into tight spaces
Especially with a really long truck
I have one on the front of my 74 Bronco for backing my firewood trailer up a crooked path to my backyard

the other day i hooked my truck up to a dump trailer from the front. i would have to unhook it either way cause i had to pull it out then dump trash into anyway so i was just having fun. needless to say i got some funny looks and it felt just as funny

I can't answer the question on the AF. Boaters put them on trucks, we put them on for front use of a mobile winch that can be also be used on the rear in sort of light duty recovery. But if or why the AF does it....IDK. Maybe to move heavy ordinance under airplane wings? I doubt it but it's possible.
