Hey y'all I have a 1979 k10 that I recently just put a mid 80s 350 in. Motor ran fine when pulled from a trans am about 6 months Ago. I put he motor in a few weeks ago and tried to crank it today. It wouldn't quite fire up. I tried a few times but wouldn't completely catch but it tried a few times. But after trying I looked under the truck and there was a huge puddle of oil. Under the truck more towards the drivers side. No clue where it came from the truck has been sitting for 2 days full of oil and hasn't leaked a drop. Please help. What could this be. It stopped leaking after I wasn't cranking it over. Please help me here. Also why isn't it starting up? Timing off? It backfired through the carb while trying to start. It's a Holley 650. Thanks!

Regarding the oil leak, check the oil filter. It may just be loose or the wrong filter may have been installed. And, make sure the filter isn't installed with two rubber o-ring gaskets. Sometimes the gasket from an old filter will stick to the block when the filter is removed. It's easy to install a new filter and gasket on top of it. When oil pressure builds the rubber gasket will blow out and dump oil right onto the pavement. In addition, look for any open passageways (typically adjacent to the distributor at the back of the intake, or down around the oil filter) that should be plugged with an oil pressure sensor/switch or pipe plug.
Concerning the hard/no start, check fuel and spark then verify the timing. Did you have the distributor out since it ran, last?

It looked to be comin from around the oil filter so I Will check it. It is tight so maybe the two gaskets. I'll check. And the no start. There is no fuel getting in to the carb and I think the motor has been turning over enough for the mechanical fuel pump to pump it on there. Any ideas?

Bad fuel pump! Or clogge line......spray some carb cleaner down the carb and see if it hits.

But the fuel pump came off my old motor and worked fine when the old motor locked up I took it off and put it on the new one.

Oil leak: Don't forget to check for an open oil tap in the filter area. Could be just a missing pipe plug.
No fuel: Is there fuel in the tank? Did you clamp the lines during the swap and forget to remove the clamps? Did the fuel pump arm correctly engage the pushrod? Is there a pushrod? ???
Check the fuel lines to make sure everything is connected and the rubber hoses haven't deteriorated, then check fuel pump draw.

When you installed the fuel pump you may have gotten the rod under the arm of the pump. Easy to do. Pull the pump with the engine cool and put a dab of grease on the end of the rod and run it back in the hole. This will hold the rod in the correct place while you bolt the pump back on.

I poured gas in the carb. When I was trying to start it

A 1/4" NPT hole is located a couple of inches above the engine oil filter. Put the trans in park, set the brake, block the wheels and have someone crank the engine while you watch with a flashlight - it should be obvious. Just don't take a bath if it starts! :o
The other oil tap is located at the back of the intake manifold along the rear china wall, just left of the distributor and typically is 1/8" NPT. I mention this upper oil tap, because oil leaking from here also can run down and drip from the oil filter area.

Did the trams am have an oil cooler?
